3-D printing is a method of converting a virtual 3D model into a physical object. 3D printing is a category of rapid prototyping technology. Basically, it works by printing successive layers on top of the previous to build up a 3D object.
3-D printers are extremely time saving, especially when comes to having to design or print all the items together. All of those individual parts are provided with 3-D printing. The price of 3-D printer have also dropped from what I have seen. I know one or two small businesses that use 3-D printing.
As for everything going to 3-D, I am not a big fan of it personally. I mean the idea is great but for example, the TV's are expensive and the 3-D glasses run anywhere from $100-$200 for a pair.

I remember reading an article about a printer which prints out objects. I don't know whether what you're talking is about the same thing. The thing I read was about the printer which could be used to make tangible 3d models, toys etc. We'll have some ink in it which will burn, mold and form some shapes. I don't even know whether it is tru since I read it from an unkonown magazine
