Gone with the Wind is a Classic film of 1939 based on a novel written by Margaret Mittchell. It is an epic romance drama that was set amidst the American civil war.Gone with the wind is probably one of the most popular and loved films of all times...The sets are magnificent and the performances are superlative.. It had Hollywood greats like the beautiful Vivien Leigh who played the role of the dominating and manipulative Scarlett O hara and Clark Gable who played Rhett Butler the roguishly handsome Lover/husband of Scarlett... In my opinion it is one of the best movies ever made in the history of cinema.....One cannot find any fault with it, it is a perfect film in every respect and a movie not to be missed by anyone... What do you all think of this movie friends?

As far as my general analysis goes, movie adaptations hardly meet the pinnacle of finesse set by the text edition of a story. Gone with the Wind is the closest-to-excellence example that the long list of novel adaptations contain. Yes there were divergences from the original story but the original charm of the theme was found in the movie as well. Another noteworthy factor was the compatible casting of the characters. The actors looked as if they were BORN to play those roles. From Rhett and Scarlett to Prissy and Pittypat, every actor fit the mould of their respective characters perfectly. All in all, its a wonderful watch. Most fulfilling that one can remember when it comes to cinematic versions of classics.

I agree that it is one of the greatest movies ever made--its messages transcend time, and the acting is superb. However, I do think it does tend to romanticize slavery, and I think this is a legitimate basis for someone to find fault with this movie, although certainly for its time it was "enlightened." The book does not gloss over the slavery issue as much. Having said that, I believe one of the great contributions of this movie was to remind the rest of the United States that the South is an interesting, vibrant, and charming, and may have helped contribute, albeit in a small way, to the economic resurgence of the Southeastern US. Gone With the Wind products certainly help tourism Atlanta, Georgia!

Hi Suzieqmom, That is an interesting point you make there regarding slavery...but it is part of the storyline and as such can be seen that way. Thanks a lot for your thought provoking response - have a nice day

I agree that because the slavery issue is part of the story, it needs to be viewed in that context (and because the movie was made in 1939)--much like Huck Finn needs to be read and understood in the context of when it was written, rather than by today's standards. Personally, Gone With the Wind is my favorite movie, and one (of few) I can watch again and again. Thanks for starting the discussion!

Yes thats true suzie..I was reading a book on British rule in India written by a British author and earlier I had read another book on the similar subject by an Indian author. They were both so very different and contradictory regarding certain important happenings during that period.History , when it is documented can have a lot of personal opinion in it...I came to know a little about the American civil war after watching the film Gone with the wind...

Oh I love Gone With the Wind, both the book and the movie. They really managed to cast it brilliantly too. It was my mom's favorite movie. My daughter was able to find fault with it though. From her child's perspective, she thought it was stupid for Scarlett to marry somebody she didn't love.

LOL Yes, but life never can be planned right? I feel that in Scarlett's case it was a marriage on the rebound ,also there was some physical chemistry between the two which later develops into something more intense ...

Yes I too have always felt that it is one of the best roles that any leading lady would ever get to portray since it had all shades of human nature and Vivien Leigh was superb....

I watched it on television about a year ago. I fell asleep while watching it and missed about a half hour of it, but I did get to watch the rest of it. I ended up liking it.

I agree with you completely, because since I saw it I thought wow this is absolutely the best film ever. I always reccomend it to everyone, and each time I can I look for more information about it, in Youtube, or on cable TV documentary shows, etc, it has everything, love, action, funny moments, and yes the movie is from 1939 but it remains so young between us, it is THE FILM

It's one of my favorite romance movies.I like Gable as Rhett Butler. He's convincing.A good example of loving husband and strong man. He's so patient with childish Scarlett!Only a man like Rhett can handle such a woman. He's perfect for her.Charming actor, unforgettable role.Vivien is good as Scarlett, perfect partner for Gable.I think this is the best adaptation ever, and it's unbeatable in many aspects.

I agree that for the film industry Gone With The Wind was one of the greatest movies ever made. They don't make movies of that quality much anymore, in my opinion, and they don't make actors like that much anymore, either, in my opinion.

Yes it was a perfect film in every respect, also the time it was made was considered to be the Golden period of film making every where in the world. The mid 30s to 60s were probably the best years when most of the great classics were filmed and the actors belonging to that era have gone down as legends of the world cinema..thanks a lot for your response , have a great day
