I consider myself a thinker. I do lots of writing (most in Chinese but I do have some in English and I will definitely write more in English as I am improving my English language skill) about my thoughts of life, culture and history, etc.. However, many people don't seem to like thinking too much, especially within Asian culture (under influence of Confucianism and Taoism). They take thinking as "trouble maker".
And I am grateful for living in America, even thought I am not a fan for Christianity but the social system was great. I enjoy the freedom of speech (I have not make any yet. lol) and free writing (which I have done quite much)

I just can't imagine how anyone could think too much! Unless I achieve a very deep meditative state, I can never turn off the rush of thoughts, and I think I like it that way. Of course, meditation to calm it is sort of necessary.
By the way, as an English teacher for many, many years, I think your command of English is excellent. It's great that you want to improve in that way and all others!

Too much of anything is wrong i guess. I'm also a thinker. As long as you can separate reality and ideality (i don't know if there is such a word but you get my point) it is ok. My point is "if you can be practical at required time" it is ok Cause whatever you think in the end you have to flow with the world.

I think thinking is a gift, and we should use it, thinking too much maybe or may not be a problem depending on the situation, there are times when you just have to go for it and not think about it much, and there are times when you think too much you just complicate things.. I think it's really fairly subjective, but what I know for sure, that everybody has a gift to think, and we should use it.

what do you mean that they take thinking as "trouble maker",I don't agree with you that people don't like think too much under influence of Confucianism and Taoism.
The Confucianism and Taoism is just the greatest reslut of thinking of chinese ancients.
I know that you mean chinese or other Asian don't like thinking in nowaday system, mostly I know you mean the regime. So I think it's not that people don't want to think ,the fact is there is no condition to think like America and western people under nowaday regime.
Chinese culture and history is more profound and coloury than America ,but maybe Chinese people can't think ,write and speech like Amerian nowaday, that it is.

Hi yiyun,
I am glad that you are in the land of the free, where you can write about anything you wish to. No matter what language you choose to express your thoughts in, you don't have to be afraid of severe punishment here in America.
Sometime, sitting an thinking can be very prowerful. It can be very motivating tool
when you have a project of writing that you just can't seem to put together. Deep thinking can sometimes be a very moving experience when you have a "light bulb" moment or when something profound pops in your head.
I guess there are some cultures that don't want their citizens to have the freedoms that I think everyone was born to have. Maybe someday we will all be free.

Not only thinking but EVERYTHING that is done to excess is a problem.
I have encountered many people who I tried to explain some mathematical concepts or what I read in a scientific journal who were just not willing to accept the possibilities.
Live your life as YOU see fit. Choose what to say to which friends.
It's difficult. Good luck

I guess if whatever one is thinking doesn't really contribute to anything productive, that would seem really like a problem. Like brooding over problems that wouldn't be solved either way without any action being done for such problems to be resolved.
Of course, there are those thoughts that would run across our minds every once in a while, it doesn't really change anything physically or immediately but, it does however influence one's perspective and thinking which would in turn affect one's actions in a variety of situations that such thoughts can be applied to. Like charity, does it really help or just make those who need help dependent on it. What would be one's thoughts to it? To give to those who are in need or hesitate when the one who is asking for it seem to be capable of doing something productive for themselves.
I sometimes get to think every now and then about things that wouldn't really change much of how I do things in my daily routine but, exercising the mind isn't a bad thing, I believe.

I think that overthinking can definitely pose a problem if it's given free reign! This has been a habit of mine for quite a while and I know for sure that it has caused me a fair amount of anxiety at times as I would be reluctant to do things and it was all based on what I thought at the time!
I think that freedom of speech is very important however, with freedom of speech also comes great responsibility! I don't like this political correctness kind of world that we live in now but it is the way it is. There's always a fear of hurting others or treading on their toes through the use of our language or speech! It sometimes feels as though we have to walk on egg shells twenty-four hours per day!
On a final note, your English is very good and I wish you luck with your future writings. Andrew

Hi Yiyun,
It's good to know that you are enjoying the place where you are right now. Freedom of speech doesn't mean a formal speech where you got to have a prepared piece to say in front of an audience. It simply means freedom of expressing what you have in mind, formally or informally. I'm sure you have done a lot of that already.
It is interesting to hear from you that people under the influence of Confucianism don't like thinking too much. I thought because Confucius was a philosopher therefore he was a thinker. What I believe, Chinese originally are wise thinkers but as part of Mao's cultural revolution, many brilliant thinkers were wiped out and intellectuals were sent to the provinces or remote areas to do labor work which was called re-education. It was only after then that Chinese people were discouraged to "think too much". This is only my opinion, of course, you know your culture and history better.

as the song says, 'too much of something is bad enough'. lets give time for our mind to rest. because when we think much, we are only complicating the small and basic thought..

Yes, thinking too much can be a huge problem. You can overwork your mind and you can go into a manic phase.
Thinking is fine, but when you think so much that you overwhelm or overwork yourself, then you might begin to lose it.

If your brain were a muscle, then thinking should be a form of exercise. China produces some extremely bright and talented people so it surprises me that thinking is considered trouble-making. If we did more constructive thinking here in the U.S. perhaps we would have made some better choices and decisions.
