Do we need nuclear weapons?

India

Hi dear members, I often wonder if the nuclear weaponry is at all needed in today's world. We are making remarkably long speeches in international summits about world peace. Probably the missile building countries are widely reproved too. The use of nuclear power as renewable form of energy is acknowledged by all. But some people still support the research on nuclear weapons programs. They say that having such researches is necessary to maintain the balance of power. But isn't the presence of an international body is just enough? There are organizations that are taking care of the world peace. Why then do we need to fund the production of nuclear warheads? A few philosophers and authors have also foretold another World War, the World War III, which will be a nuclear warfare. Does that make your very soul shiver with anticipation? Please share your views regarding the topic. Thanks in advance for your participations. God bless you all

mmm.... When has the international body ever prevented, or fixed anything? It didn't stop Russia from storming into Georgia. It didn't stop North Korea from sinking a South Korean ship. It didn't stop Rowanda, or Somalia, or Croatia. It hasn't stopped India from getting nukes, or Iran from getting nukes, or North Korea from getting nukes. I can't think of one time in the history of 'international bodies' where they ever helped in any matter. So the answer to the question is, yes we do need nuclear weapons. I don't want to be defenseless to nuclear armed nations around the world. And I'll never put my trust in some group of politicians somewhere, just because they are an 'international body'. That's a bad plan.

I am reminded of Terminator II, when the machine is asked - we are not going to make it, isn't it? :) We are self destructive race I think. There are a few like that in nature, we are nothing unusual. We cant call ourselves as advanced beings at all. As to nuclear research - kiddo - all knowledge is good. It is the application that goes wrong. We can use that technology to destroy or breakdown any cosmic debris coming hurtling down at earth, and likely to wipe off mankind the way dinosaurs were wiped out. We can also use such technologies to maintain distance from Sun because as our Sun starts decaying, the gravitational force in it will be drawing us closer and closer, possibly making earth as much of a polluted chemical factory as the planet Venus. As to peace talks, politicians . :) No politician ever wanted war to be out of picture. The reason? I have already mentioned somewhere - Mrs. Gandhi used war against Pakistan to invoke patriotic sentiments, and regain power. Some arms producing nations want the wars to continue. That is because technology fetches higher profits when compared to other exports. Their arm sales account for major revenues. So whether we have nuclear weapons or not, we will continue to kill each other, what does it matter if it is going to be an RDX, Kalishnikov, or nuclear energy. But what I am more concerned about it is averting World War III is not likely prevent the end of our species. We are killing ourselves with our over production, and unnecessary habits.

May be the it is mistake to discover nuclear.

Yes, pipi. I agree with MLam here. Nuclear energy can be used with good purpose as well. It is not just the weapons that have been manufactured with it. It is a great source of renewable energy, which means in distant future when all coal and petroleum resources are exhausted nuclear energy can supply our energy needs. The thing is that we should concentrate more on the humanitarian aspects of nuclear power rather than wasting the taxpayers' money in inventing new weapons. Thanks for the response. God bless you

I agree to that vivi. 35% of Bulgaria's energy requirement is supplied by its nuclear plants. The problem is not with the research but with its implementations or, in your words with human factor.

I think that having nuclear discovered is not a mistake but in fact what is wrong is people's incentive behind doing certain things. In this case, if people use the nuclear discovered to develop cleaner energies so as to save the Earth from global warming, would you still say that discovering nuclear was a wrong act? I think you would say no as it was people's bad incentive that had made them support the development of nuclear weapons.

Its really crazy in this world we're living in. I feel that if everyone could make peace we should. We wouldn't have to have nuclear weapons if people found ways to get along. Its all about having power over everything. We was brought here on earth to help each other not destroy. But its a shame that some people don't think this way. They figure if they can't have power nobody else would or should but them only. Long as the organizations are taking care of peace, hopefully I hope we should be find.

Hi, It is not wrong to be selfish. What is unfortunate here is that people turn selfish in the most unwise way. Intellectual myopia is greatly responsible for all these conflicts. We are power hungry and so is everybody. But in the race we seem to forget all about the fundamental principles of human existence. War mongers will never seat idle as long as there are lack of sensibility in our own fellow citizens. Only a few people are responsible for major devastations in the world. History proved that so many times. The ultimate well fare can only be started from an individual level. Until we make that sure it will be a complete foolery to even think about world peace. Thanks so much for this thoughtful response. God bless you

I think that it is not very wise to have wars with the other countries because it causes a lot of damages to the countries involved and brings a number of negative influences to the countries as well. As starting wars has very high cost and everyone in the countries only focus on fighting in the wars and neglect the productions in different services, there will probably economic downturn in the countries involved. Also, it takes a long time for both the countries and the people within the countries to recover from the war. Again, it costs a lot of money as money is needed to rebuild the infrastructures and people who are injured during war time cannot work. Therefore, it is considered to be silly now to have started wars. Some people support the development of nuclear weapons because they use them to be political tools to have threaten the other countries so that they can receive more benefits from those countries as they understand that people are afraid of the power of nuclear weapons. I disagree with this because nuclear weapons are very dangerous and it will cause great damage to people as well as the Earth by the radioactive substances within the weapons if it is out of our control, might be owing to accident. Therefore, I think these people should be more considerate and this is also not a right solution to the problem they are facing as what they need now is the understanding and comprimising from the other countries rather than using something to threaten the other countries.

Yes, indeed. Think about the soldiers. No doubt they are the finest and most able citizens and yet they are being sacrificed for such a petty cause. I highly appreciate their fighting for their country, but what worries me the most is that are these fights worth anything at all? The cost incurred by these battles are no doubt quite huge which otherwise could be utilized in social welfare. Waging war or manufacturing weapons to intimidate other countries is not a philanthropic sincerity by any chance. Rather it's just another form of political oppression. Like I mentioned earlier, the awareness should be at individual level. There are only a few power hungry people whom we should identify. Then we should replace them with some peace-loving, philanthropic personnel. Thanks so much for your contribution. God bless you

No, we don't need nuclear weapons, but everyone seems to think that we do.
• India

I agree to that. Actually we are anticipating attacks and inventing weapons in the name of self-defense. The argument though unfounded, is standing on the fact that all the global powers are actually facing a resource conflict at this time. If another World War begins, oil will be the primary cause for that. Thanks so much for your participation. God bless you

You ought to be directing your question to the US and Russia, the two nations that started the war on nuclear weapon and the very two nations among nations that would not comply with the NPT on WMD. I believe that other nations got into nuclear weapon as an act of self-defense, in the event our noted bullies - the US and Russia - were to threaten them as is their custom.

LOL Yeah, I guess many people here will share similar opinion. Now that most other countries have their own nuclear research facilities the bullies have to device new plans to discourage them in the name of 'world peace'. Like one of our friends already mentioned here, in spite of all the proliferation attempts, all the countries will engage in nuclear warfare if, by any chance, World War III begins. I hear many countries giving open threats to their rivals that they would wipe them out from the face of this earth etc etc. Thanks so much for your participation. God bless you

This kind of sounds like a "right to bear arms" question. Nuclear weapons are necessary as long as there are others out there with nuclear weapons threatening the peace and safety of law abiding people. Knowing that the other person has a weapon as effective as yours might make you a bit more cautious about using yours.

When I was growing up, there were two super powers, the USA and the USSR. We both had nuclear weapons, but did we use them on the other? No, we did not because we knew what would happen. It keeps each in check.

It is always about power that drives nations to support advanced warfare. As individuals we don't need it. But nations would fund this type of project to keep up their status and to show the world that they will be ready for another world war. It is always about who will dominate when such thing happen again. It is sad to realize that the idea of war would seem to never go away. Maybe it is for security, but human beings always have that tendency to use weapons to show their dominance. I just don't think there is a need for nuclear weapons. Civilizations end. And if another world war happens, with nuclear weapons, it could mean the extinction of the human race.

I am not allowing a situation. The explosion cleans a people of land as a animal. It also destroys a cloud to make hot over a people. The people hardly builds up longer and clean mess up large lands.

big countries like europe, usa and russia still needs nuclear weapons--just incase.but i think they will get rid of the majority of their stockpile though.but still have enough to keep potential enemies in check.theres always going to be enemies in the future.id like to see all the countries without nuclear weapons in the future.

Remember the movie Independence Day? I think if by any chance some hostile aliens land on earth we will certainly need those weapons. If we start hurling nuclear missiles at each other the world will burn to ashes in a few minutes. But, like you said, it is an effective method to intimidate the neighbors and any potential enemies. Thanks so much for your valuable participation. God bless you

I too feel that very soon, maybe in my lifetime, there would be another WW and it has to be nuclear this time. It doesn’t exactly makes me shiver, I’m rather doomed to my fate and that of the world. None of us ordinary mortals make any difference to the nuclear programmes of big nations…its all controlled by politicians and the corporate world so if they are going ahead with it, they will just do so…it doesn’t matter what youor me think. All these talk of peaceful use of nuclear power…all eyewash coz ultimately, its all about power which every nation wants to have over others.

We don't need it, but we need the nuclear power. Nuclear is very useful to our lives now a days, but the problem with this is it's waste materials, that until now scientists are still finding ways to recycle it. Well an atomic bomb may be the reason why the war in the Pacific ended, but this should never been used or even invented. It is very destructive, not only to human but also to nature and its resources

We cannot put the toothpaste back in the tube or the cat back in the bag diba? We need nuclear weapons because World Peace is never in the cards; one just has to ask John Lennon, if he were alive. Can you find a link to the following editorial for me please "Dreams of Polemical Avarice" thanks, Eric

For me war must not be held. Nuclear should not be considered as one weapon to protect one nation. We should engage anymore to the War. No one will benefit from that war. I hope that Nuclear warfare shall not become reality.

We, humans, are very lucky to have survived the era of the Cold War! There were some real situations where it was possible to have one great part of the humanity exterminated. But it appears that man can't draw lessons from obvious things. And don't forget that even if everybody agree with that, it's a huge and expensive task to destroy all the existing nuclear weapons.
