Do you sit down for 12 hours then i understand you get back pain! The body is mainly build for standing and walking... Would it be possible for you to change your working station into a table that can have different heights? That could enable you to switch between standing and sitting position while you are working.

You can stand if you have the correct working table for it. Tables made for working station that can be lifted or lowered depending on your desired working position (sitting or standing) We had such tables at my old job and it was pleasent once every few hours to stand for half an hour. Since the table get lifted to your working height the monitor + keyboard and mouse also comes in the same height again and then the only difference is how your body is positioned. (sitting or standing)

I used to have the same problem and it was not something I could easily ignore. I tried painkillers but only eased the pain for a while and not correct the problem. Now, I'm no longer disturbed by the pain after I went to have a massage on regular basis. It's only when I moved here in Thailand that I got to enjoy thai massage more than once a month without hurting my budget. I hope you can try going for a massage and see how it works for you.

I'm no stranger to back pain. I had a slipped disc in my back a few years back and it still hurts from time to time. The best thing that helped me with that is antiinflammatories and the harder the surface the better it was to sleep on. You should see your doctor and see what the doctor suggests. If its muscle pain you can try some deep heat.

If you have chronic back pain, I suggest seeing a chiropractor they do wonders. Or as someone else has mentioned acupuncture. On our campus when students are stressed out and have to sit down for study time, their backs will naturally begin to hurt and there is a professional acupunturist at our health center. That's another alternative if you don't mind needles

There are many things that could have contributed to your back pain like what kind of work you do, maybe your weight? Most common cause would be not doing proper body mechanics. You should use your leg power when lifting objects and avoid bending. Try to pivot when turning. But all of these suggestions are for prevention. If you had this condition for a long time and if pain medication don't work, you should ask your company doctor about it. Maybe you have a slip disk or something.

Stretch. If you're working for long periods of time you need to be stretching. Stretch before you work. Stretch on your breaks. And don't overwork your back. Don't lift more than you can comfortable lift on your own. Don't extend your reach. If your arms are fully extended, than that item you are reaching for is too far. Move it closer.
