Pretending to have cancer

United States
August 10, 2010 9:49pm CST
Yesterday I saw on AOL, an article about a woman who lied about having cancer for two years. Me and my mom started talking, apparently this has happened before. In a story she told me, one lady faked cancer and even lied to her own DAUGHTER. Who was 12 years old. We figured it's just to get cash for whatever reasons. But really? There are some people who actually HAVE cancer in this world, and some don't get money. That is so wrong and unfair to people who actually have cancer. I can't believe that someone would stoop so low to get cash, that they would pretend to have cancer. That's just wrong, I can't believe anyone could sleep at night with that kind of a lie. Okay... Rant over. So what do you think about this?

Well that's a pretty rotten thing to do and that lady better hope it doesn't come back to bite her. I used to work with a guy who told everybody he had cancer, and he always took Mondays off so he could go in for chemotherapy. Well, after a couple of months the bosses found out he didn't really have cancer and he was just taking Mondays off so he could have 3 day weekends.......he was promptly fired. That's what I mean about coming back to bite him/her........KARMA. Anyhoo........besides that, I'd like to welcome you to our happy myLot family.....I hope you have fun while you're here. YOUR MOM MADE ME COME TO YOUR DISCUSSION!!! No....really......WELCOME to myLot!

I'm pretty sure it will come back to bite her. I never knew so many people lied about things like having cancer or some illness just to get days off at work or to get money. Apparently it happens more than I thought. :'( Thanks for welcoming me, well I saw what my mom wrote, it wasn't exactly MAKING you, it was more like, "Come check it out." *cough* exaggerating *cough* lol...

I seen this, but it was on Facebook and shared by a friend of mine. It is a shame that people would stoop so low to take advantage of a person and take their money without any guilt or shame at all. It will be in the back of other peoples mind for awhile for sure and make them think twice about helping those with cancer. I want to welcome you to Mylot and hope you will enjoy your time here and possibly make a few friends. I love reading stories your mom post about thing you have said and your reactions to it. Again..Welcome..

yup, she lives in a city close by where i am and of course, it is all over the news. this chick raised over $50,000 for her 'cancer' and then took off. says she has a personality disorder (poor thing). none of her friends nor family were in court (her parents say they are embarrased by her and she even swindled her grandmother!)

Wow, she lives in a city close by? And raised 50K? Wow, that is a lot of money. I can't believe that. I can completely understand why nobody she knows or loves didn't come to court. It's sickening and I'd probably be embarrassed to come to court with her too.

i remember when i was younger, we have one neighbor who begs around the street. she was not sick as i can remember. but all she knew is that, beg. maybe she just never got to school or something, that made her a beggar. but she had a nice family and her children were all in school. welcome to mylot, dear friend.

That's really sad, that you had a neighbor who would beg. Well, it is good that she wouldn't lie about having some illness though. But it's sad that she would have to beg for money. Well, if she wasn't able to go to school, it's good that her family was able to. :) Thanks for welcoming me. :D

It's not a good thing to lie about anything, especially having cancer. I have an uncle who has cancer and it's really hard on his family 'cause they're all in their early teens and they gave him six months, and it's not a good thing to lie about something that is so sad when it really happens. This woman should be ashamed of herself.
• United States
12 Aug 10
It's never good to lie, that's completely true. And especially not good to lie about having a very serious sickness like cancer. She should be ashamed of herself, I'm pretty sure she's not. I bet all she's ashamed about is that she got caught in the act. I'm very sorry about your uncle having cancer. :(

whoever does that is pitiful and sick. Its unfortunate the people that exist in this world and what they will do. cancer being as serious of a disease that it is, it claims thousands of lives each year there is no cure! the pain many have to go trhough with that disease yet someone actually has the nerve to pretend and fool those around her that she has cancer?? i'm sure life will deal its blows accordingly her way.

It is very pitiful and sick. There are so many victims of cancer, I can't believe some people actually are so heartless that they would stoop to the level where they lie about them having cancer. If she does actually get cancer later in life, nobody will believe her (probably), and won't help her or give her any sympathy. Of course, everybody has lied at least once in their life, but to lie as big is this is just wrong and is taking things too far.

I think it's absolutely terrible that someone would pull something like this. It's about as low as one can get. Hopefully karma won't bite them in the butt and they get cancer for real, because if they do, no one's going to believe them, or help them for that matter. Not only does it make them look like a horrible person, but it can ruin it others too. Others that really do have cancer (or any other illness for that matter). How are those who are willing to help supposed to know who to actually help, if someone like this goes around and lies about it? It's all so sad, really. Anyway, welcome you to mylot. I hope you'll enjoy it here!

Thanks for welcoming me! But anyways... It's just terrible. If people like that do get cancer, then they definitely won't be getting any sympathy or money. I guess she's never seen cancer and doesn't know what it does to a person. There are people who actually have cancer, and here comes along some lady who pretends to have cancer just to get money and sympathy. That makes me sick.

Hi Fantasy17! And welcome to myLot! You sound vaguely like someone I know? I must have you mistaken with someone else. Anyway, I also read that article on AOL and was extremely disturbed to see that someone would do something so dispicable! It is people like her who make it difficult for the realpeople who need help to get help becase it gets people to wondering! And yes, someone else did the very same thing not too long ago. She was a school teacher, I believe and had ran the same scam in more than one state and pulled it off each time until finally someone figured it out by the third time! There are some very evil self centured people in this world and I hope they enjoy that beotch known as Karma!

Welcome to myLot, and I hope that you like it here! This issue is very personal to me, because I have had several family members die from cancer, and a couple more are currently either in remission or just doing a "wait and see" approach to determine how rapidly the cancer is progressing. So, I am definitely not the person to ask about this issue. Let me just say that none of my family have received financial assistance of any sort to help with the cancer treatments or economic loss that the family has sustained not only from the paying for the medical bills but also from the loss of earnings associated with caring for a loved one with cancer.

I'm so sorry you've had members of your family die from cancer, and that you have some that have it currently. And, I'm very sorry about your family has not gotten any financial assistance to help out. This lady should be ashamed, faking cancer and getting money for it.

Hi Dearra, first and foremost, welcome to myLot. :) We've been hearing so much about you, we feel we practically know you. :) And I agree with you. In fact, I think all charities should have conditions attached to them, and there should be limit to how much a person would be entitled to in lifetime. For example, a person may get assistance from government - for only five years of his or her life. Rest of the life, they should plan properly. That will stop unnecessary siphoning of funds. People would tend to use that sort of safety net only when they really need it rather than becoming dependents for entire lifetime. Such lifetime leeches are lazy people, and they prevent really needy folks gettin any help. :) You are sharp!!!
• United States
12 Aug 10
That sounds like a good idea. Having a limit to how much assistance a person gets, so people who take advantage of having cancer can't just keep getting money every year. Besides, wouldn't you think that somebody who is getting SO much money would be getting better/cured from their sickness? I would definitely be suspicious if somebody was getting money from me and they weren't getting better.

If not for money, some people may want the attention and sympathy. It's a way of being manipulative - so they can get their way - toying with everyone's emotions that they have some incurable illness. Rather sad and sick that they have to resort to that, eh? For people like that, I hope it'll be like "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" . . . someone will catch them in their lies and they'll see what happens when something really happens to them.
• United States

Yeah. It is a lot like the boy who cried wolf. It's most likely for money, sympathy or attention. It's just really sad.

Cancer is a horrible disease. So many are victims each year of this monster. Anyone who pretends to have this should be ashamed of themselves. How can they live with themselves when they do this? You have to wonder what goes through a person's mind who would pretend to have cancer? What are possibly hoping to gain from this madness?
• United States
12 Aug 10
I completely agree with you! I don't know how I could live a lie like that. I'd definitely lose myself. I don't know how anybody could do this, but apparently it happens a lot, unfortunately. Cancer is a horrible disease, and this lady should be happy that she doesn't have it and hope she doesn't get it in the future. She probably wanted to gain money and attention from this. I'm thinking she's probably just too lazy to get a job, or she has a really low paying job.

lying is practice while young and constant practice could turn a person a scam. Lying is against human nature and against law.

She was probably a liar her whole life. Lied about not cheating on tests (she probably did, since she lied about something like that), lying about not turning in homework, lying about work. And so much more.

That's absolutely terrible. It's amazing what people will do to get attention or money. But...doing that to your own daughter seems worse, somehow. She's a CHILD.
• United States
12 Aug 10
Yeah, it's much worse when you lie to your own CHILD about this. I can't believe she could lie to people about this. Much less her own family. Hopefully this didn't influence her kid to lie about things like this.

I think it takes a strange personality to do this, and a great liar. Of course, I was working as a paraprofessional at a small school nearby and this third grader had her teacher convinced that she could not talk because she had her tonsils out the previous Friday. Boy was her mom mad at her. On the other hand, people heard her mom tell this girl to lie for her about not being able to come to work So in this case, we could guess where the girl learned to lie about illness. It is not right as a child to lie about an illness and it certainly is not right of these adults to lie in order to get sympathy and money.
• United States
11 Aug 10
Strange personality alright.... Yeah, she definitely was a great liar, two years pretending to have cancer? I cannot believe that you met a woman who had her daughter learn to lie to people. I've met people who have had their tonsils taken out, they could talk. I've also lost my voice before, but not because I had my tonsils taken out. I wouldn't lie about something like that. Well, hopefully that girl won't rely on lying her whole life. I can't say the same about the mother, if her mother told her daughter to lie that she couldn't come to work, then it's probably too late, the mother probably lied her whole life. I've been taught to never lie. But of course, I'm not perfect and I have told lies before. But I will never rely on lies, and will most definitely not lie about having some illness.

hi fantasy 17 love your avatar. Oh that lady must have been very greedy and also very selfish. And how sad tol lie to her own daughter too. Yes its totally unfair and so piggish. I even found an imposter on the net who had sent me an email asking for funds to help his sick daughter who had leukemia. Well it turned out the man was single and just using donor contributions for his greedy piggy self. I think that these people perhaps do not even have a conscience at all. oh and welcome to Mylot. YOu made a great first discussion.

You like my Avatar? Thanks! I thought this kind of topic would be good to discuss. That lady probably was very greedy and selfish. When my mom and I were talking, she said that the lady was probably too lazy to get a job or had a really low paying job and didn't go to college or something. But still, that's no excuse to do anything as horrible as that. People like this probably don't have consciences, it seems a lot of people don't anymore. They should be ashamed of themselves. Oh and thanks for welcoming me! :D

Sigh! I guess this is trend of the world nowadays. Times are too tough that people would lie just to get hands on money. I'm currently on a tough financial situation but I'm doing my best not to cheat or lie. Not saying this to get an applause from anyone here. It's just that I'm so afraid of Karma - what goes around, comes around. Besides, I'm experiencing hell on earth already. I don't want to spend the remaining years of my after-life in hell. Once is already more than enough. Aren't people afraid of God anymore? Don't they fear the consequences of their actions? Let me share with you 2 quotations and spread them to others in the hope that it will open their minds: "It is better to live your life believing there is a God and in the end to find out there is none than to live your life believing there is no God only to find out in the end there is ONE." "They say that life flashes in front of your eyes right before you die. Be sure it will be worth watching."

11 Aug 10
Yes, I absolutely do not understand this kind of thing. I'm sorry about the tough financial situation, by the way, but it's good to hear that you aren't cheating/lying to get money. It feels good that there are people who are still good and honest in the world. I believe in karma too, what goes around does come around, well at least to me it does. Well, I guess people don't really fear the consequences of their actions because they believe they won't get caught. Thank you for the quotes too.

It is unfortunate. I don't know why or how so many people have changed like this. It's truly saddening. There are people who actually have cancer and might not get money, and then there are people who pretend to have cancer and they do make money. It's so unfair. Thanks for welcoming me. :D
