Looking for a job from another state is frustrating!

So I recently was presented with the opportunity to relocate from Baltimore MD to New York City. Moving to New York has been something that I wanted to do for at least the past ten years, and when I had a friend who lives in NYC offer for me to become their roommate I was very excited. The problem is I seem to be having difficulty finding work. My guess is that's because I am in Baltimore currently and can only apply to jobs that advertise online. That being said Im sure that hundreds of resumes are sent in for each job posting. Have you ever looked for a job in a city that you were not yet living? Any tips on making my resume stand out from the others?
