In the course of trying to optimize search engines functionalities for my blogsite, I've tried many methods suggested by many SEO sites. Can anyone tell me whats the best way to get around for dummies?

you look at time spent on site, doesn't matter you visitors if they only stay one second. if you want more people on your site it must be self hosted and the seo is easy to learn just ask me if you need help.

This question cannot be answered as one or the other. You should focus on quality of traffic, you can measure this by bounce rate (the lower the better) and by the time people spend on your site. a ton of traffic is good but if there is a very high bounce rate that means that your visitors aren't targeted enough.

Maybe it's best if you just enumerate what you've done so far and let others comment if you are indeed doing SEO correctly. If you can include your target metrics, that will help us gauge what your goals are and how well you understand the problems associated with online publishing.
Answering broad questions will tend to imply that SEO is something everybody should do or every SEO activity should be done by one person. Without knowing what your level of knowledge is right now, it's difficult to propose solutions.

Lots of things are need to consider for search engine optimization.
Try to concentrate on:
1. Choosing appropriate keyword phrase for your blog-site.
2. Submit your blog-site and RSS feeds on popular search engine.
3. For getting better SERP -- Summit your blog-site in popular directory and blog directory with only main keyword(targeted keyword) though which you can get popular your site.
4. Write good content for your blog site.
