the digg patriots

anybody heard of this? a bunch of sneaky fanatics were caught trying to game what appeared on the front page of the social site digg. for the last year or so about 100 right wing fanatics had been constructively using their time to vote down anything with what they considered a liberal opinion. this was quite a wide definition and they attempted to censor completely unpolitical stuff, including stories about green energy, homophobia, and various science articles as well as any liberal opinions. now i am sure there are nutcases on either side of the political spectrum trying to do this all over the place, and i would imagine in most cases they cancel each other out . now the saddest thing here is that these people presumably think in some way they are doing good. they probably refer to themselves as 'warriors'. can anybody think of a more positive way for right or left wing nutcases to spend their time than trying to stifle anything they disagree with?

Learning some actual facts and real world information would be a positive step towards exiting La La Land...but that's no likely to happen. So....the only other option would be for them to contribute something worth reading themselves. Oh wait, they might have to resort to using actual facts and real world information. Never mind....

Then the only thing to do is a thumb-ectomy. Without thumbs they cannot hit the space bar.

no that wouldn't work. they also launched abusive attacks on people whose opinions they didn't like. they were basically organised trolls. i don't think they left nice comments to those they DID approve of, but that would be one possible step forward.

hi jb have to think, early in the morning but can get my mind in gear here.Lets see knitting has already been used. aha quilting and get them all involved in making quilts for all the people who have lost jobs because of left and right nutcases messing up our US economy, and quilts for the children in places like Chooc like Children s Hospital of Orange County. Mostly little kids fighting cancers of all kinds. this way the right and left 'nut cases might actually do a lot of good for a lot more p eople than they have done so far.

quilting is a lovely idea - but do we want to allow access to needles? sewing needles are sharp and pointy too.

ok, here is my realistic reply - ignore them, dont give them the platform. extremists are extremists. snarky reply - they can move rocks from one pile to another, then back again. Very tiring

the problem here is that you couldn't ignore them. this little bunch of would be censors were fairly effectively controlling what did and didn't end up on digg's front page by abusing the voting system. millions of people use this site and 100 or so nutjobs were trying to make sure they only saw stuff they approved of. anyway i just looked at digg and they seemed to have sorted it - they aren't accepting any new members just now and the front page definitely contained a couple of things the digg patriots wouldn't have liked. moving rocks from one pile to another is a lovely idea anyway. and great exercise.

I can think of lots of ways, not sure if they'll contribute to make the world a better place or not, but definitly more exciting than abusing digg. So, some suggestions. Trying to come up with things that both left and right wing nutcases could do together, so they could swap ideas and make friends and turn the world into a nicer, cuddliers and cozier place. 1) Hunt down the stupid people who try to blind pilots with lasers when planes take off. This would actually make the world slightly safer for the pilots and the people in the planes and the people living around the airports. 2) Hunt down people who take part in too many reality shows, wrap them up in cellophane and send them in to recycling. Not sure what they can be used for, but that'd hopefully keep them off the TV screens. 3) Count how many raisins there is in each packet of breakfast cereal, and make a statistical analysis. 4) Build plasticine dinosaurs. Sell them on e-bay and use the money to save the dinosaurs. This might be a bit late, but nothing's like supporting a lost cause.

i like number 3 especially. counting things is soothing and a very good activity for the differently stable. however i suggest you make them think it has a political purpose by getting them to analyse the speech of politicians. they could count how many times they use particular words and compare it to an average. the results would be fascinating and illuminating*. for example they might discover obama is too fond of the word 'infrastructure' or palin overuses 'effectively'. *no they wouldn't

That's an interesting thought. After they have finished counting they could do a lot of nice statistical analysis on it. Do left-wingers say "and" more than the conservatives? Do green politicians use more strong verbs than others? (not sure if they have any green party in the US, but they could borrow from the Europe. There's at least a few light green ones around) Then, the ones who still haven't calmed down, can make everything into nice charts and tables and those strange flow-charts thingies. Using Excel. (Because everybody knows that it's so much easier to use Matlab, but easy isn't really the purpose here)

sorry I shouldnt laugh but I cant help myself. Tell them to crochet themselves some plastic bags Some people have way too much time on their hands. Why not do REAL good instead of this.

is there such a term as nastiness pollution? i am sure they add to noise pollution too - they almost certainly screech - but what do we call their nasty words clogging up the internet? and would drain cleaner remove them?

Let's see, how else could these nutcases spend their time...hmm... They could go for a nice, relaxing swim...in shark infested waters... They could take a bubble bath and use their blow dryer and/or curling iron at the same time... They could jump into the lion, tiger or bear enclosure at their local zoos... Relax, I'm only kidding! Well, kinda sorta...lol! Seriously, it has already been mentioned that the sensible idea of actually debating and discussing their opinion with those who disagree with them would never fly, I'd like to see them locked in a room with a TV on that only gets either Fox News or MSNBC - the opposite of whichever side these nutjobs are on. Of course, even that won't change them, once a nutjob, always a nutjob! Annie

do the same thing that i'd do with religious zealots. pair them off with another nutcase with opposing views, give them both baseball bats, and stick them on a little island somewhere.

The best thing any left or right winger could do is to tell the truth all the time. That would be a refreshing change.

A more positive way to stifle a different opinion is to debate it. Let the people hear both sides of an issue and determine for themselves which is best.

this lot didn't want different opinions to be heard. or in fact anything that they didn't like - i think their interpretation of 'freedom of speech' was 'freedom to say stuff i approve of'. anyway they've been found out now, although no doubt they'll be up to their tricks somewhere else. i think social sites will be looking out for patterns like this now though, this story has been all over the news and digg especially is not at all happy.

Current social and political life is damaged by polarisation into opposing camps and a lack of any substantive reasonable dialogue about what is good for your society. Think of Al Gore's book on bringing rational thinking back into politics. I remember being surprised that he was getting such positive reviews for stating something that seems so obvious: politics need rational/reasonable dialogue. But sadly, it is the case that we have this kind of ideologically-driven, antagonistic, defeat the liberals/conservatives, politics.

it is based entirely on emotion, with almost no rational thinking at all. when there is any the emotion comes first, then 'reasons' are found for the emotion later.
