It was recycling bin day yesterday and we put out our black box (for papers and bottles) and our blue box (for cardboard and plastics). Then later when I went to take them in they were gone............
Obviously the bin men have put them back somewhere else, but walking around the neighbourhood I couldn't find anybody who had more than their alloted share of bins.
We recycle a lot, and we already have a backlog building up here.
So what should I do? What would you do?
Would you perhaps knock on every door and ask if people received any extra recycling boxes that weren't theirs?
Maybe get a megaphone, and shout about the injustice of having your recycling boxes pilfered..
Write notes and post them through every door (tho' this might be a bit too costly, and umm, not very environmentally sound!!).
Put your recycling in the neighbour's recycling boxes. After all, they're all going to the same place. Might get a bit crowded though..
Or phone the council and ask them for some new boxes, even though there might be a charge for this (not sure?)
(*Incidentally, if you're British and you've lost your recycling bins, did you have to pay for new ones????)
Thanks!!

Hi Liquorice,
I would ask a neighbor if they've received any extra and then if that is not the case I'd call whomever you need to cal to request more. Explain that on the last recycling day you're bin was not returned to you. I am quite certain they'd waive the fee if there were to be any, or atleast give you a discount on the fee for replacing bins. On a side note if you have to pay for recycling then there may be no charge at all for the replacement of the bins.

Thanks somecowgirl. Yes, I've tried asking the immediate neighbours and no luck so far. Thing is how far should I go? It's a long street...
We probably will phone the council and ask for some more. I have a feeling that my neighbour was charged when this happened to her (although it was a different kind of bin - a green one!), so not sure how sympathetic they'll be!
We don't pay for recycling, (well, only through our taxes), so will have to phone them and find out what we need to do.

I have been asking the same exact question...only for a different reason. We moved about 2 months ago and I requested to have the bins dropped here about a month and a half ago...still none! I have contacted the utilities dept about 7 or 8 times since then and they keep telling me they will have them delivered....umm yeah! We are still waiting....

Our neighbour sometimes asks if we have any space left in our garden bin but I've never heard of them being pinched. Although I do in fact have a "spare" from the London Borough of Waltham Forest that moved here when my BIL brought some stuff down. I think that if you explain the position the council ought to at least listen sympathetically. Our garden wheelie bin is £28 apparently. I don't know about the rest I'm afraid. Go on the Council website and see what you can find. The heading ought to be "recycling" "Rubbish" or "Environmental services" apparently.
