How do you make your own luck?

Fabricating your own luck - How to make personal luck

I just met a person who said that he didn't believe in bad luck or good luck. He said that he makes his own luck. Personally I thought he was just all talk. I tried to ask him if he makes his own luck, how does he make it? He went on to give this explanation about working hard, and taking every opportunity, etc. How about you? Do you believe in luck? If you don't, how do you make your own luck? What do you do to make everything go your way?

I believe in Luck, and I believe we each create our own luck. I am a lucky person, I know a lot of people, I live a happy life, I work hard, and get more then justly rewarded. As for making your own luck, it is as simple as building your network, meeting people, being nice, the more people that know you, and like you, the higher chance of someone recognizing something that could benefit you and letting you know about, so people that know and are liked by a lot of people are inherently luckier then people that don't or aren't. Sincerely and With Appreciation.

Thanks for pointing out concrete examples. For equating luck with the number of people you know, or your network, that shape your own life. I guess good things do happen to you when you're surrounded by people that makes things happen. Or at least have the opportunities for luck just because some others have the means for whatever it is you want in life.

It is my pleasure to have been able to provide you with a deeper insight into your quest for knowledge. By the By, it is why "Network Marketers" make so much money, they spend a lot of time and money building their web, and then providing people they know with a service or product they can not get anywhere else, great idea, in my humble opinion. Cheers.

Well, after reading the first page of responses to this discussion I am really confused. I thought luck was just that, luck, whether it be good or bad, it's still luck. Making things happen for you, as the example of getting a good education and then job, that has nothing to do with luck. That isn't called luck, in my opinion. For me luck is something a person can't control or it wouldn't be called luck. I wish I could think positiive thoughts, as another person responded, and have those thoughts turn into reality but that isn't called luck either, that's called dreaming. I think good luck is very random and it picks whoever happens to be in the right place at the right time, or in the case of bad luck, being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Hello chrislotz. I think you broke it down accurately. Luck by definition, would be something we don't have control of. And it may or may not happen to both prepared or unprepared person. Thanks for dropping by.

As a therapist and counsellor I have heard many tales of bad luck from my clients. Whilst I believe that luck can play a big part in life, there is no doubt about that fact that for the most part, we create our own circumstances. If we take care that we pay attention, we can avoid many situations, but if we are wondering around and not thinking of our actions and just doing things because we like the idea without thinking it through first, things can go horribly wrong. Most times, we have to take risks in life, but we can lessen those risks if we think before we act. _Derek

Thanks derek. I think you've put in the most sensible response so far. And being a therapist and counsellor I would like to put stock on what you wrote down. Specially knowing that you've dealt with a number of people/clients.

I don't really believe in luck one way or another either, really. I hate to say it - but I feel like nothing really ever happens to me that is extraordinarily "lucky". I really don't. I feel like the majority of things I've had come my way are due to working towards these things as goals. I've had friends, and still do, that seem to ALWAYS have lucky things happen to them. One of my girlfriends won $350 at the casino last time I went with her (a couple of weeks ago), and a couple of times before that - this same girl won $400, on penny slots and not doing max bets. Boy oh boy. That's really the only example of "lucky" that I have on the top of my head, I guess. Kinda lame, but oh well. Maybe it's also my perception of lucky, not to get all cognitive and whatever - but TECHNICALLY I am lucky, I still have my 2 jobs, I just got a .50 cent raise at one (long story with that one though.. for another day or discussion lol), I am healthy and relatively happy and have good friends & a good family.. I guess I probably take those things for granted. So really, I should be thinking of how incredibly lucky I am. What a snot, right?

Haha! So I guess for you maezee, it's just a matter of perception. Although you may think that you're life is boring, and without any 'lucky' things happening, you are actually already 'working' on making your luck happen with the jobs, health, etc. But I know what you're feeling. Maybe just one time, it would be nice to have one fortunate thing happen to us. Maybe win the lottery or something.

I believe that thinking positively and believing that what you want is already within you the way to make your own luck.when you think negatively,for sure negative things are bound to happen.when you think positively good things for sure will come your way.thinking positively can uplift good moods,which in turn attracts good things and good people.

How I wish it could be that way for me. And it would be that easy to teach myself to have only positive things within me. So that I could attribute it to luck whenever something fortunate happens to me. It's just hard for me. Thanks.

I think what i want..if it happens i feel my power of attraction was strong. If it does not than i mee i had the restricting beleifs. I think and create images in my mind to make things go my way.

I see what you're saying. It's more like the power of positive thinking. You visualize it in your mind, and make it happen. I guess that qualifies as making your own luck. Now, if only we could eliminate r'estricting beliefs'! Thanks for dropping by.

Personally and based from the experiences of people i know, i do believe in good luck and bad luck. I don't believe that we make our own luck. Good luck comes from God if it's meant for us. What we can only do is to strive hard to show to God how dedicated we are and that we deserve blessings from Him through good luck. Bad luck is when we have done something bad, i believe that there's a karma for that in the form of bad luck. I know someone who has already done everything he could to be successful in everything. He believes that people are the one making their own luck by being hardworking and by grasping every opportunity that comes their way. But, unexpected situations prove him wrong, because no matter what he has done, he soon fails after his every little success. It's really God who decides if we deserve His blessings. The key is to believe in God and not only in ourselves. :)

Believing that good luck comes from God doesn't necessarily mean that bad luck comes from God's displeasure. That's just a connotation. Bad luck doesn't necessarily mean the opposite of good luck. Believing that good luck comes from God doesn't mean that our efforts and hardwork are useless. What I meant was that we don't make our own luck. We only work hard to achieve success but if it's not your time yet to shine, no matter how hard you work, you can't have that luck you want. But it doesn't mean it's bad luck. People just consider it as bad luck but it's not. It's just not your time for luck yet. I believe that it's up to God if we deserve some luck and if it's our turn to have that. If we make our own luck, why are there so many hardworking people who are still living in poverty? Why do good people still suffer when they don't even deserve it, if we have the power to make our own luck? Only God has the power to give that luck. If we just continue to work hard with faith and hope, and it's our turn to have that luck, then that's the time we can say it's good luck. It's happened to me a lot of times that faith is the key to have that luck. Due to a lot of work at home, I would always run late whenever I would have an appointment to anyone. My husband would tell me not to go anymore because it would be a waste of time for he believed that the person who we'd meet wasn't there anymore. Nevertheless, I would still insist on going because I believe that faith is the key to good luck and that God has the power to give that. To my husband's surprise, the person to meet was still there. It happened all the time and still happens.

In addition to that, good luck comes from God. Bad luck is what people say as the opposite of good luck but it's not. Because in a lottery, to win is good luck. But if we don't win, we should not consider it as bad luck, for it'd be ridiculous for everyone to win everytime. People who won in a lottery didn't make that luck. Luck is luck, people don't make it. The bad luck that I meant was karma. If we do something bad, the result of course, would be bad, too, and that's bad luck. If we're just not as lucky as others, it's not bad luck.

I think it's unfair that we pin goodluck on God, as it is flawed that we believe bad luck would come from God's displeasure on doing bad things. I think that faith and luck are two separate things that shouldn't be mistaken for each other. But thanks for the point of view.

I believe in making your own luck. I make my own luck by working very hard for something. I believe that hard work equals victory. I also believe that life is fair. If you work hard, you achieve something even greater. You are rewarded for your hard work and self reliance. That's good karma. :)

That seems to be the consensus among most of the responders. That hard work, and of course with some preparation, is the way to make your own luck. And you are to be commended for thinking 'life is fair'. I'm sure a lot of people would disagree to that. Maybe even me. But I am still hopefull that it will even out in the end. Thanks.

I do believe in luck, destiny and fate, every thing is predestined, we have to follow the track, but this does not mean we sit tight and expect things to happen .. we have to labor hard, and that is making our luck..
@bounce58 (17385)

I think that is exactly 'how' we make our own luck. By working hard or laboring to make sure that things go our way. Because if we just sit tight, somebody else could take 'our' luck away from us. Thanks Prof!

I don't believe that for a minute. Maybe it is not just obvious to you now, but you are actually already sowing the seeds of your luck in the future by working hard and studying hard. Just keep at it! I'm sure you'll come to realize it one day. And you'd start to think that it wasn't as bad after all.

i myself don't actually believe in luck cause we are the one who decides for the future what we wanted to be in life--i believe in opportunities taking chances on it so no regrets afterwards asking myself "what if?"

We can't make luck, luck is going to come naturally. I do not make luck, luck comes to me without planned or made.

I think so too. Maybe we can help a little by our actions, but other than that I believe luck comes naturally, no way to create it.

That is one view. But others seem to think that by our actions, we only not help our own luck, we actually make it. Thanks for the inputs.

Some people believe in that others say it is fate. I do think we can empower things in to exsistance by having a positive attitude. Easier to say than actual do though, in reference to the positive attitude.

Maybe having a positive attitude is a way to 'make' our own luck. Like you said/wrote, it isn't easy to keep a positive attitude, maybe that's why it takes a little bit of effort. Thanks Bluedoll.

Of course I believe in luck and I think everybody should. There are things in life that are beyond our control and totally depend on luck. Winning a lottery draw is an exact example. But there are many thing that are within our control and the favorable results greatly depend on how we do it. I stated that these results greatly depend, meaning not entirely because I believe that luck still has part on this. Others may disagree but my experiences have brought me to this conclusion. I can give you a clear example. Two students (say A and B) are preparing for an exam. Both studied with the same concentration, equal length of time and covered equal amount but not the same area of reviews. Day of exam; Most of the problems are covered in the review materials of student A. As expected student A got a higher score than student B. Luck definitely played a part on this event. But of course hard work has the lead role. My belief is that these two, hard work and good luck, usually act in harmony. Good luck is affectionate of visiting hard workers and shy away from lazies.
@bounce58 (17385)

Maybe it is luck then that prompted whoever wrote that exam to chose whatever student A studied. But don't you think that if student B studied all areas that might be covered in the exam, that he was in fact making his own luck? Thanks.
• Philippines
30 Mar 12
Student B could kill himself studying but surely can't cover everything. And he could be that unlucky if the exam given covers those he missed. In many things that we do, the great part depend on how we do them. They greatly depend on how much effort we exerted, but not everything is within our control. We could exert our maximum effort but we could not expect the maximum result because there are factors that don't depend on our effort. And that is the factor of luck! Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that our life depends on luck. What I'm pointing out is there is a part, it could be very small but still it affects the outcome of our effort.

Not only do I believe in luck I believe in fate. Our lives are 80% written for us and the rest is up to us. I see G-d as the best chess player, waiting for us to make our move so He can counter so our fate fits our lives.
@bounce58 (17385)

That's an interesting way to look at it Sarah. That although 80% of our lives are already written, we still have 20% of free will that could still be manipulated to fit our fates. I need to think about this more...

I profoundly believe that Lady Luck plays an important part in everyone's life .I speak from the experience of my life .Although we that is my husband and myself worked after great disasters in life we have not succeeded .We have been having great mishaps .Like the story of the ant and the grasshopper we have stuggled but in the end we have not achieved much in life .The same has happened with regard to my son and daughter also I feel that ist is poorva karma because even in our hearts we ahve never cursed any one or spelt downfall for any one .So to succed in life we need luck the most .

It is hard to argue with first hand experience. I know that all this talk about luck happening to everybody, is just that, just talk. Specially if you haven't really experienced something deemed as 'lucky'. I hope that before you get to the end, you get to experience a little bit of luck in your life.

Hi bounce58, your friend is right. Luck comes if you work hard for it. I believe in the saying that goes this way " If there's a will, there's a way".

I guess that's one way of looking at it. Or one way of making your own luck, by imposing your will on whatever situation you're up against. And of course when you're successful at it, then you could attribute it to luck. Thanks for your insight.

I believe in luck, but I am not sure I could make them by myself. Mostly, I like to think it a tip when I did something well or not in some period. Good luck or bad luck, like some comforts, make me have enough patience to face somenthing good or bad, especially when I have no idea why they happened in that way. I may not make everything go my own way, but I could try to make influence through the part I could make and decide.
