I have no idea where he learned it but when I let him lick my plate he is smart enough to put his paw in the center to prevent it from running across the room.
Ten years ago, my big boy would chew gum without swallowing.
Do you have stories of odd tricks or quirks you never taught your canine? Share.

I think alot of dogs are quirky. Mine always wants to eat his food on a rug of some sort. any food like a biscuit you give him he will immediately find a rug and eat it on there.

I have no rugs, only tile and concrete. Mine will go to their cloth or WORSE, find one of my clothes that they have knocked down to sit, lay, and eat on.

I think this eating habit is a general rule to all dogs. Even if we have bare floor in some places, the bone is always chewed on the carpet. I don't know why Binne do so, Nera used to do the same. But when it comes to sleep, Binne rather sleeps on the bare floor than on the carpet.

It seems your dog helps you a lot in washing the dishes
I think the paw thing is from their instinct, they have to be sure the prey won't fly away while they eat it. Even if the plate won't fly away, only us, humans know this, dogs' genetic code doesn't.
As for the chewing gum, Binne does the same but with the gum she finds on the sidewalk I have never waited to see if she eventually swallow it, because I have to be sure she doesn't have the chance to do so.
Did you give your dog chewing gum or he used to steal it?

I mentioned the paw thing because the other three dogs I've owned would lick the plate into a corner or table leg or solid object, this one holds it and doesn't end up following the plate as he eats.
