The Age Divide

I've always been curious as to where the notion came from that a man can have a younger partner but a woman should stick to someone within her own age bracket or older. There have been a number of conversations with friends or even perusing articles where you learn that some younger men are interested in older women but are often rejected. In return, some do not wish to have the stamp of 'cougar' branded onto them by friends and family. So do you have a story of a May December romance that changed your outlook or one that you wish you had taken a chance on? If so, why did you or did you not do it and what did you learn?
