I feel pity for PAG-ASA especially to their director, Dr. Nilo, who had been thrown out of his position in PAG-ASA. I believe that even though PAG-ASA does not give exact or accurate weather forecasts, they still try to help us with there weather forecast. I also believe that our meteorologists are good because they can still forecast typhoon using "ancient" instruments. hahaha! yes ancient! I mean oldies instruments. PAG-ASA asks our government to buy or upgrade the instruments but the government believes that our oldies instruments are still good though. I guess we really need an upgrade if we want our weather forecasts be accurate, precise, and exact!

Being a scientist is different from being a manager. I believe Dr. Nilo was removed from his position not because he was not good. He was removed because he does not have the skill to lead his division. He was assigned in another position that his potential is quite needed. I gathered from the news yesterday that they don't have ancient instruments as what we were made to believe. It was only 1 instrument. Well I pray all will end well.

oh really? what station? i have some doubts in news especially if it's from ABS-CBN. not to mention, they are biased. their reports are mostly in favor of aquinos. you know why? it's because they have "utang na loob" to their late mother, cory aquino, since she again gave the ownership to the lopez. in time of marcos, the station was government-owned. ABS-CBN should really be thankful for her.

This too I believe is the reason why he was assigned to another department. Based on what I saw and heard on the news.

That's so sad for Dr. Nilo. I think he was just trying to make the most out of what the agency has. They also check other forecasts from other countries in collaborations with the data that they have. He shouldn't have been sacked for what happened. Anyway, they did say that it might affect metro manila. And besides, no one can ever predict weather systems. Not 100 percent guaranteed, at least. That's nature. You'll never really know what will happen. It just happened that this specific storm wanted to surprise us. hehe! Which makes me think........So if P-Noy makes a huge mistake while being the president and this mistake costs us a lot of money, should he be sacked too? I don't he'd have the balls to resign.

yeah that is so bad.. but i guess things do happen for a reason - it could just be that he really needs to be somewhere else. i would think so too that he knew this was coming. working for the government these days are not always stable, you are not really bounded by the laws we have - you could be fired, replaced when a new government steps in.

hi! i get your point. yes i am also a believer of "everything happens for a reason" saying. however i also believe that there's a time for everything. and i guess this is now the time for the PAG-ASA to upgrade their "ancient" equipments into new ones. thanks for sharing! have a nice day!

i don't think there is and "exact" as in 100% exact in forecasting weather..because after all it is forecasting and predicting. I felt sorry also, the government should upgrade instruments first rather than ousting directors who are reduced to oracles only because of this Jurassic instrument, when i was a kid I despise this department because they are like a ordinary folk who keeps on buying ticket but could not hit at least 3 combination number.

hi there! yes you are right! that's the reason why it's called "forecasting". there's a possibility to have changes in it. well just like what i've said, yes i really think they need to upgrade their instruments to be able to give weather forecast effectively. thanks for the response!

Well the very reason why its called a forecast is simply because it is some sort of guessing with the aid of certain equipment. Weather can change anytime and typhoons could shifts direction any moment. Considering this plus the state of our instruments, it is very difficult to come with such very good and accurate forecast. Perhaps the first thing that should have been done is upgrade the system and equipments instead of replacing the person who try to make use of those outdated equipments.

I feel the same way too.. If this continues there will be a time when we will run out of meteorologists.

yes you are right. there have been offers to some employees in PAG-ASA like the hydrologist and weather forecaster to just work in other countries. Who can't resist the temptation of the salary 3-5 times higher than their recent work. But i still salute the people who would choose to serve our nation despite of the fact that money is a great deal. thanks!

maybe he should need a break, Dr. Nilo i mean.
He did the best he could to predict our weather despite the fact that our technology in weather forecasting is soooo ancient. that really puzzles me why they had him quit because he got the experience, we don't need people who are on the administrative side only but expert on the weather itself. sooner or later we won't have scientist left

The earth is deteriorating and weather can be unpredictable. If you could remember that hours before "Ondoy" visited the Philippines, the sun was still shining so bright and sky was so clear. Then suddenly it hits the country. There will be a time when nobody could ever predict such monstrous disasters. Our government should avail new equipments for weather forecasts. If they could just imagine how much the damages of typhoons would cost. It would even exceed the cost of purchasing new instruments. This matter needs a very wise decision.

Yes, too bad. The change in administration was fine but changing and ousting some people who are worth it in their field of experties seems to be odd and unreasonable. I guess the administration seems to too cruel for humanitarian considerations. I hope they'll try to look into it.

I guess there is a reason to have that certain kind of feeling regarding the Pagasa. However I applaud them for giving at least a sensible forecast using ancient equipments. I guess that the ancient instruments where the key to the training of our weather forecasters that is why they are considered as one of the best around the world.

I agree with you...we need new and better equipments in PAG-ASA so they can provide us with accurate weather forecast.
To Dr. Nilo, I think he should better look at the bright side of what had happened, at least now he can freely accept the offer of foreign countries to work for them and get payed double, even five times over of what he earns with PAG-ASA.
Too bad for our country, we are losing the few good men (weather forecasters) we have due to our poor systemm. :(
