I just use a scouring pad after I am done cooing with it and then place it back on the hot burner or oven..Then when it needs it, I season it with olive oil. Never wash it with soap or towel dry it, for that ruins the surface. I have many pans, but use only three for the others I use I didn't know how to clean them and now they are just for decorating, they look great hanging over my wood burning stove..

I remember my grandmother having a wood cookstove, do you cook on it in this heat?? WOW!!! My parents had the wood burning stove and always sat water on it to put moisture in the air in the winter time.
Thanks so much for your response. I didn't know that you could score them with a scoring pad. Is that a regular scouring pad or like an SOS pad???

I have never used them. I use to get stainless steel scrubbers from Watkins and they were terrific. Held up and lasted forever!!! BUT as with all GREAT and TERRIFIC products, they are a think of history.
We have a fireplace but very seldom use it as when it is in use it it warms the living room up nice and toasty but shuts the thermostat off to the rest of the house so then the other rooms are all cold. Does come in handy when the electric is off once we had to all sleep in the living room because it was winter and the electric was "out of service" because of an ice storm, then I even learned how to cook in it besides roasting hot dogs and marshmellows! Thanks for the response.

I use stainless steel scrubbers from Brawny. And no, at this time our chimney needs a liner so we don't run it and if we did, it would be only during the winter to heat the home. Though when we did use it, we didn't actually cook on it, but we'd use it to keep things hot, like a cup of coffee..:) Oh, and we also had a pan of water to put moisture in the air too..

I had not known about the vinegar and salt. I just always make sure to wash them as soon as I have used them, so the food does not stick or dry on. Season when needed. I think there were a lot of good methods here. I can hardly wait to tell hubby about the salt and vinegar.

we use cast iron a lot and I guess I am just lazy. This is what I do. I wash with soap and water, then put the pan back on the stove to dry, just turn it on until ALL of the water is gone. Then I spray it with oil and rub it in with a paper towel. Let cool then put away.

I saw this tip from one of the cooking show that I watched last time. According to them put some form of fat on a warm cast iron pan, place some salt and scrub it a little bit. Afterwards, the salt should turn a bit black from cleaning the stuff out. Toss out the salt and wipe with a paper towel. I hope this helps out a bit. :)
