Is there any truth in superstitions?

My friend shared with me that we must not mention anything about whether a cake would rise properly when baking. It is a superstition which she has experienced coming true many times. Do you think there is any truth in superstitions? Have you experienced any which have come true?

I must say that's something new for me. I heard my sister said to our neighbor once as he was leaving for offshore fishing that she wanted to buy some when they get back later. And just like me she was surprised to learn that such thing should not be mentioned when one is leaving to fish. There seems to be a similarity here. I didn't hear of any fish she got to buy from them that day.

I suppose this is like the sentiment of counting your chickens before they are hatched... the belief that materializing profits/products beforehand brings bad luck.

I think everything has explanation. We should know and learn the truth beyond things. Sometimes we only excuse ourselves because of the superstitions. We are just being ignorant because of believing them. And sometimes they are just part of our imagination and even our culture and tradition. We are in the modern age we can surpass our ignorance through computer and through books. Let's learn and live in a truthful way.

not sure about any of them. usually when someone came to me with any superstition, I would try to analyze it logically. if it could be explained logically, and make some sense, have science explanation, I might consider it. however, if it was something ridiculous, I could only shrug and walk away. basically, I don't believe them.

Superstitions originated from our grand grand parents .......our parents and grand parents might have believed ......but this is 21 st century...how can we believe it....its just a foolish thing....computers and internet play daily role in our life.........so i dont believe in superstitions........Like this i was thinking some two years before ......one day a horror happened in my life.......my neighbours family went to a long tour around india in bus...when they started from their home a black cat crossed the bus and i too was seeing it .....some in bus said it is not good time to go...some said to move the bus...atlast they started the journey .....After some 2 hours we heard a news that our neighbours bus got accident and luckily only wounds were there for them......from that day onwards i too believed some some superstitions......i am just saying not to believe fully in superstitious activities...just a part....

The black cat incident sounds ominous indeed, but it could be just coincidental, or it was in a highly hazardous zone or the driver was sleepy that day or some other road conditions. It's difficult to find out whether it is really due to the black cat or not. Or maybe the black cat is giving a pre-warning...

hi bluemoon pavilion why on earth would talking about whether or not a cake would rise cause it to fall? makes no sense. More likely it will rise if you used the proper amount of ingredients and made it following the recipe or if you goofed it might fall. superstitions are false beliefs really. I experienced only one,do not walk u nder a' ladder when a man painting a bu ilding is on top of it and you jostle the ladder. results a bath in blue paint. luckily it was latex so it washed off. whew. common sense should have told me not to walk under a ladder, thats not superstition really just good old horse sense. instead.

Hi Hatley, According to my friend, it came true for her many times. Of course, maybe we can blame it on her skill or some other factors but there seems to be some mysterious reason behind it. I suppose if we walk under the ladder WITHOUT jostling it, we would be all right. Personally I wouldn't do that since the space is so limited, why should I restrain myself hee hee....

All superstitions have to have a beginning somewhere. i guess there could be a grain of truth to them. I try not to put too much blind gaith into superstitions. If i do, i see them becoming the truth in whatever i do. I try to consider the source when a superstiition crosses my path.

It's strange how the human mind works. You are right, sometimes we make it come true by believing in it.

superstitious beliefs originated from long ago, which had come down from generation to generation, added to or subtracted with data. But the fact remains that these beliefs had come about because something had happened before which triggered these notions. So, i a way, there must be some truths to these superstitions. Just like when you are walking down the road and then suddenly a black cat crossed your path. Superstition has it that you had to go back and should not go on to wherever you are headed to because the cat signifies something bad. Another is we should not sleep when our hair is wet, because we would go crazy if we do. This belief has some scientific basis to it, because it is unhealthy for us to sleep on wet hair. there are a lot more superstitions which ranged from the believable to the outright stupid, but we can't deny that most of these have some truths to it.

I do think there are some truths to it when it first started, but then as the message gets passed down, some facts might have been distorted, or some became ridiculous to others. I suppose many superstitions came about because of ignorance. People in the olden days might not be so knowledgeable and when they encounter something they don't know about or are afraid of, they would come up with their theory which later developed into superstition.
