I don't know much about these so I am asking. I have had my PC for 5 years. I do the AVG antivirus, CCleaner, Disk Defrag, scan that cmes with the PC...and never have I had a virus or anything like that, however, doesn't mean I don't have one...just that it wasn't caught or not a problem.. like a tracking cookie or something. And I don't do alot of online stuff like Utub or games...things that might have virus etc attached in there somewhere. But my PC is running so slow and it takes so long to boot up and I ave done all the little things with the Task Start up menu and things like that but it is still slow. I mean at least 5-7 minutes from the time I turn it on until I can open anything.
So I was wondering about a program I have heard about cleaning the PC registry on my PC. I don't know anything about this kind of thing and don't want to mess things up on my PC but was thinking this might be my problem. Over 5 years, lot of thing could have been collected on there and that is causing my slow down.
Can anyone give me a lesson about what the registry is and can it be cleaned or should it be cleaned and with what and all that kind of thing?
Thanks for any suggestions

Well my favorite program that has taken care of the viruses would be Avast I just think that they are the best, but it's not free maybe just the trial, but when it ends it ends right there.Still I decided to still continue with avast because they are good at keeping viruses away and helping to remove them that way the computer can be much faster and it won't slow down and that's what I love. I always love it when a computer is healthy because then there won't be any of those annoying pop ups or anything like that because those really do tend to frustrate me a lot. Before I found out about avast we had a lot of problems with the computer and I mean a lot because sometimes the computer would not start up so we would have to reboot the whole thing and restart it from the beginning, but no more of that thank goodness. Anyway I wish you the best of luck on getting a faster computer because a slow computer is never fun computer. You want a computer where you can go anywhere on the web and you won't get a virus because your computer will be protected with firewalls that keep those out. Oh yeah and CCleaner I actually still use that too because it is one of the best cleaners out there it does improve the speed of the computer I will admit that because it has helped me out in getting more free space for my computer. Sometime the more free space that you have on your computer the faster it goes, but when you have more programs on your computer it tends to slow it down a whole lot. So I guess you can try deleting some programs or uneccessary files that you don't need on your computer anymore. Good luck again and happy mylotting.

Thanks for your comments. I do use AVG and Avast came with it, and I thought with both running at the same time, that might be my problem so I deleted Avast. I'll put it back on. I did have it while back and no problems... Avast isn't free? It was when I had it recently. Are we talking about the same thing or maybe you mean there is an upgrade that costs other than the free version....

avg and avast were both good at protecting our pc's but installing both of them at the same time might cause you more trouble coz they might have conflicting programs....i tried avast before...at first i was satisfied on its performance but there was a time that a virus had infected my pc...avast cleaned it up so well that it even deleted some of the components of my os that i had to reformat my pc totally....

I use AVG free edition and it is just fine so I would advise you to keep with it. Most important is not to have more than one anti-virus/spyware/registry cleaner/malware/etc. program set up to run at the same time - they will just fight each other and slow you down. Let AVG run automatically when you start up but set all the others to start manually which you can do in turn.
Windows automatic updates can really slow your pc down because they will also try to run when AVG is checking at start-up. Set Windows Updates to download automatically but only install when you allow it.
Good advice from previous response - get some compressed air in a can and blow through the fins in the processor heat sink and also your graphics card if you have one. After 5 years it is amazing how much dirt is attracted by static electricity.
Finally, run msconfig in a DOS window and un-tick all the boxes in the Start-up section and check if your pc starts quicker. Any important program will put itself back in the list and if you have a problem you can add ticks till the problem goes.

I do not recommend that you personally mess around in your registry. That is for experts. It is easy to create a malfunction if you change things in the registry. You may think you know the name of the file you want to get rid of and when you find it, just remove it. But the path is critical. You may have 10 different files on your computer with the same name. Which one is the one you want to get rid of? For example, there is a malware with the name "svchost.exe". That is also the name Windows uses for some of its operating files. Location is key. So stay away from the registry. Wise Registry Cleaner is pretty good, and it is free.

SpyBot does a good job at protecting your registry from certain types of malware or adware coming from the internet. After cleaning your registry, you need to immunize it from new ones. SpyBot does that.

I tried Spybot and it didn't seem to help any. I took it off. I have AVG and use CCleaner.... are those the same things?

AVG is an anti-virus application so it works on viruses and maybe, worms. CCleaner is just for cleaning which SpyBot also does during checking and immunization. But I don't think CCleaner is meant to immunize your system.
SpyBot protects you from a different kind of threat: usually adware and spyware. It does this much like antibodies in our bloodstream. It makes it impossible for malware to attach itself to your Windows registry because it creates harmless entries which blocks future infection.

When you install a software on your computer, then, a whole new registry file appears, which contains many information about this software. Even if you uninstal this software later, you can't delete the registry file automatically. So, for a long time, as there are more and more registry files, your computer will get slow gradually.
So,you can download one registry cleaner and try to clean your computer, which is often secure and won't lead to any side effect. After doing that, I am sure you will see a better situation.

That is what I have been thinking. Altho I didn't have much software on there in the first place. I took off some old games that my grand daughter hasn't played in a few years that she has grown out of, but that didn't seem to help any. What registry cleaner do you recommend?

When you install a software, they will write some kind of code in your system which called as registry. This code contain lots of information, from the validation code to how the software work. Actually, when you remove all your unwanted software they were not 100% removed that's why when some trial software expired you cant just re-install them cause some code where install in your system telling that software were installed previously. This redundant data sometime give more load to your system to recognize them. Here the register cleaner will take part. It will remove some of the registry data that were not in use anymore. CCleaner also has built-in registry cleaner in them so you can use it. Bare in mind, even if you used registry cleaner not all unnecessary data will be remove, some of them just will remain in your system. And please don't delete your registry data excessively, some of them may been used by other program.
If you're using free AV software, I would recommend you to switch to Avast Home Edition. Test it and I can guaranteed you'll be more than satisfied. Have used them more than 5 yrs and I'd not even single problem. For the free edition, they're not just cleaning your system from virus, spyware or malware but even prevent them from infecting your system.
For 5 yrs computer, for sure you had done lots of thing with your system. Most ppl think when they deleted files from the recycle bin the files is gone but they're not. I'll list the software for removing this type of files if you want to but I prefer to advice you to upgrade your system. And try cleaning the hardware also. Try cleaning the metal plate on your RAM, do some dust cleaning on the processor fan etc. This thing will help you also...

Thanks for the explanation. I appreciate that info. I did have Avast along with the AVG...I install the AVG and the Avast came withit. I deleted the Avast as I was thinking maybe with both of them running it was to much for things to do right. I'll put it back on.
I thought that the registry was for as you mention, just wasn't to sure. I hear alot, but not knowing alot, I never know what I should do. I did buy one of those compressed air cans and did a good cleaning on the inside of the tower recently.
I'd love to upgrade, just can't afford it right now. I would like your list of software for removing things like this to help my pc run better. It used to run great, so I know it is just junk collected somewherer

i think they only fix the registry problems and may be some time they could corrupt also the registry files. so this is good to take a backup before starting any task over registry.
in my view this is good to try new softwares. But i dont think those registry softwares could improve the performance alot.

I know nothing about them, so that is why I ask. I think I have done everything else. I don't have that much software on. I have only about 2 games for my grand daughter of software and that's if for my own installed software. I just don't understand as this happened literally over night. Prior... it has just been doing fine, then suddenly it started this slowness. That is why I was thinking maybe I haven't cleaned off a bunch of junk or cookies

I do face this ..
when I was using whistler..I did reinstall it every two months..
also I used the same crap cleaner and avg...
its better to install ccleaner before any soft is intalled and do a backup of the registry...when needed uninstall all soft's except ccleaner and do revert changes...
now I'm using Vienna ..and I do reinstall but in 4-5 months...
three reinstall till now..
and I use the same ccleaner but ms security essentials as the antimalware...
I recommend Vienna...its the best...
thanks for the topic...
have a great day/night.....

PCs tend to slow down if you have a lot of programs installed on them. You could uninstall programs you don't use anymore.
