No Draws in the World Cup?

ESPN is reporting FIFA is thinking about doing away with draws in the first rounds of the World Cup. What?!! Am I the only one who thinks this is a very bad idea?A shootout should be the very, very last resort! I hate shootouts I don't watch them. How about you?

While the intention is to prevent teams from packing 10 players behind to hold out for a draw, I think FIFA should not meddle too much in it. Instead of a shootout, they should explore the ideas of awarding points for each goal score.

Taken for example the pre-season mini tournament, the Emirates Cup. Teams are awarding 3 points for a victory, 1 for a draw and nil for losing. Also, for each goal that you score, the team will be awarded a point. So it the match ends at 3-2. The winning team will have 6points and the losing one 2points. This will force the team to score goals knowing that at 0-0 draw will do them more harm than a 3-2 defeat.

Fantastic! You should notify FIFA. This makes perfect sense. Thanks for explaining.

I think if first rounds draw are not made in World Cup, then it will be knock out stage, I suppose? If it will be knock out stage from now onwards, I do not think the idea is bad, this way the less stronger teams will get eliminated in the initial stage itself. Shootout is a method to produce result, I like it, when excitement gets at peat, when shootout takes place.

I am your polar opposite! When there is a shootout, that's when my interest decreases. I must be a purist. I rather see the players play than Just shoot. I am known to just turn off the t.v.when there is a shootout. I think FIFA is thinkig about having shootouts in Every stage.

I am not so sure about this one. I think the first round is fine as it is. I am ok with draws and the three points for a win. I think that is good enough for teams to play attacking football. A shootout is a bad idea and that would mean there would be teams that would simply play for a draw and then try to gather points through shootouts. I do not support this point. Cheers! Ram

I totally agree. I heard on ESPN that the reason for all these new changes is that they are trying to woo Americans. Bad Idea! Try as they may , soccer/football won't be as popular as it is everywhere else.

Don't worry, it is still under consideration and me too hope that it won't happen. But on the other hand Sepp is also considering going back to the golden goal rule in the extra time. I think that is better than the former just like the rules in ice hockey. I think that would be interesting to watch.

well its still under consideration but i personally dont think they should have shootouts either i wish they would make it like hockey used to be ware overtime continued until someone scored and that was it they just had to score that to me was very entertaining in hockey and would also be in soccer

lately the FIFA has been having very awful ideas, but i don't think that they will not eliminate the draws, because then what will be their next great idea, play with a squeare ball instead a round one? XDD

I think the game is OK just the way it is. Although many would frown on a draw-no-winner game, I think that's what makes the soccer/football game unique. And that's the objective of the points, where teams could gather points and could still win divisions based on aggregates. I like that the game reward players that excel. The game may be a draw, but one star player may still steal the limelight for scoring however many goals. No to this FIFA idea in the WC!

I always said that football should stay as it is, no modern technology in it and not so many changes. If you play well, but not manage to win, and then shootout will come and you lose, you will feel like an idiot, and maybe get very demoralized. Maybe they want to avoid goalless draws, but this way the weaker team will defend more, because shootouts are lottery, and maybe they have a lucky day. So I think this is another "Blatterish" idea. I think I said everything with this. I say: Keep football as it is, with all the mistakes and other human things in it.
