This coming August 21, Filipinos will be celebrating "Ninoy Aquino Day", its a special non-working holiday, I'm just wondering how and why did he became a hero? What made him unique from the others who also risks their lives for the country?

Hello Mai, He was an opposition to the Marcos Regime, a very strong one. then Marcos imprisoned him, then let him go as he went back to states. knowing Marcos later became week and sick, he returned despite the risk of getting killed. after the assassination, the people sympathetic with his burial. he was a hero because most people knew him as the one who stood against marcos, and then cory was chosen to lead because of his husband. they were known heroes to oppose something, but when it comes to track record, that is something else. although i admired Cory for not be intimidated after the several coup attempts, things didn't went well with the public because all problems went worse.

i think he did become a hero because he was quite popular in opposing the then president, Marcos who by the way has led the country into so much debt and also has put our country in a martial law. he was not afraid of being jailed, nor being killed - he knew i guess that that is wha he was asking for when he started to become the opposition of Marcos' government. He, amongs others was one of those that actually started liberating the filipinos minds, that we should not be afraid and should only be more brave to fight for our rights.

I have read that he served or volunteered to teach people how to have "kabuhayan" or livelihood at his earlier years. He traveled to alot of places just like what Efren Penaflorida did to educate those in need. From there his fame ballooned because of his willingness to help filipinos to get away from poverty and live a more comfortable life. The surprise was that he got killed with reasons unknown.

Benigno Aquino Jr. "Ninoy" as he is called, was a popular Senator of the Phillipines, Governor of Tarlac and he was assassinated on 21st August 1983. Hence in his memory, the day is celebrated as a rememberance. His wife Carozon Aquino later on went to become president of Phillipines. They are both treated as heroes in the country.

i have the same question too! why is he a hero? he was against the Marcos and all but what did he really do besides that? and what did Cory do for our country? i can understand their love for our country but loving and doing something is totally a different topic. Philippines is getting worse, you all know that. well... i just hope Noynoy can save us... and let's do our share too. our president can't do everything, we need to help out as well. in our own little way. :)

He is declared a hero because of these things, first, he is an elitist, second,he is an opportunistic politician who swayed people's opinion/sentiment through a promise of democracy, last and unfortunately, he was allegedly murdered by his opposition. Of course, people do not like to be held by the neck all the time so they want freedom. Freedom from Marcos' rule and then replace it with his rule is what I say. In reality, he is just a catalyst. The Filipino people themselves are the real heroes.
