Sleep Apnea Isn't Life-Threatening. :(

When I searched for the description of the word/words, this I found on The Free Dictionary: life-threatening: causing fear or anxiety by threatening great harm; "a dangerous operation"; "a grave situation"; "a grave illness"; "grievous bodily harm"; "a serious wound"; "a serious turn of events"; "a severe case of pneumonia"; "a life-threatening disease"
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/life-threatening
Why most people don't think this health condition isn't life-threatening?
Why most people don't consider this sleeping problem as serious health problem that needs proper attention and treatment?
Or I am just being a paranoid or being pressured to get the surgery immediately?

I think you said he had to have tonsils and adnoids removed how do they put this to sleep apnea?
Here is something I found that you might try to get him releif.

his tonsil, adenoids and tongue are all large, larger than normal size for his age. these block or obstruct the air passage so the surgery is really necessary. no more medicine could make them shrink since it's hypotrophy, progressive degeneration of the tissues.

The illness itself is not always life threatening but what the illness causes(lack of sleep)is. Lack of sleep can cause cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, weight gain, memory problems, headaches and impotency. There are several options as far as treatment to help this illness and research into other options are still in the works.

with my personal research and a lot of doctors we have been, even if i am not a medical person, i can believe that surgery is the only treatment for our son's condition. types of treatment also depends of the gravity of the condition.

I am glad to hear you are being proactive. That is the best way to be in a situation like this.

Something that can cause you to stop breathing in the middle of the night is definitely serious. Maybe it's not dangerous to most people who have it, because they wake up and start breathing again, but it is dangerous to some of them. And who wants to take that kind of chance with a child's life?

that's why, even if it's difficult for us to be his sleep-mate, we have to bear with his loud snores to be able to monitor him.

i think sleep apnea is a life-threatening condition if you have it and your partner is considering smothering you with a pillow because he/she can't sleep properly because of your constant snoring!!! lol!
seriously, sleep apnea is something that can be fatal if not treated properly. i think surgery works plus some medications. otherwise, losing weight and getting the proper sleep posture will help as well.
cheers!!!

While sleep apnea may not be considered as life threatening, it isn't anything fun, that's for certain. My ex has it and it was sure torture for her and me. Nothing more frightening in the middle of the night than to wake up and realize that your partner is not breathing
If there is some surgery that can correct the problem, I say go for it as soon as possible

Trust me when I tell you neildc that sleep apnoea IS a life threatening condition. My husband has been told he has it after he had a sleep test due to excessive snoring. The doctor explained to him that his condition is due to a sudden weight gain which is obviously not your son’s problem, and that he should shed some pounds because his throat is being restricted by the weight which causes him not to breathe on occasion while he is sleeping. The doctor urged my husband to have further tests because sleep apnoea can be very dangerous. Don’t let anyone tell you that it is not serious, please...

yes, i know about the machine that helps the patient breath continuously. but that machine, i guess, will not do better for my son. his is progressive degeneration of the tissue and really needs surgery.

I think u need to worry about those bad tonsils & forget about this sleep disorder they have said Zayzay has. Bad tonsils can cause many problems, Neil.

I don't know much about the disease but I do know that it involves not breathing at certain points during your sleep and thats scary and life thereatning to me. as long as the surgery doesn't have horrible side effects and is guaranteed to work, do it. I can't imagine having something as scart as sleep apnea thats terrifying.

we will go with the surgery when we already have enough money to pay the hospital.
