Watching movies on the big screen in a theater ...

If the movie is good with a great story line, good actors , director etc; there is nothing like the experience of watching it on the big screen rather than sitting at home and watching it on my dvd. It is great watching it with an audience and have some pop corn/chips/puffs/sandwiches/coke etc during the interval..I would prefer to go through the trouble of booking the tickets in advance and going to the theater etc; Of late I have not seen many films in the theater , but love to watch one ..... How about you all? Do you like watching films on the big screen in a theater ?

Hi Kiran, Yes, I do love watching the movies on big screen…time was when going to the movie hall was the biggest high of our vacations or festivities. I remember whenever there was a marriage in the family, once the marriage ended, all the family members, including the newly weds would go out for a movie and dinner and get to know each other better, away from the restrictions of home…those were the only times we kids were allowed for ‘adult’ movies (and this I’m talking about is late70s Hindi films LOL)…and then those college days and days of romance where the hall was the safest bet to escape the eyes of people (and always fearful of getting caught by *someone* who just ‘happens’ to know my Dad LOL)…yes, those days were precious and since then, its always thrilling to go and take your seat, wait with bated breath for the lights to dim…the entire experience is wonderful. However, I must say that nowadays I cant really afford to watch movies at the halls anymore. You know the condition in India (I think it’s the same in all our cities)…stand-alone halls are few and quite seedy…most movies are screened in plexes with tickets so exorbitantly priced that I feel it’s a waste of money really if I’m to catch every other blockbuster. On an average, a good Hindi film costs Rs. 200-250/- and for our family of three, its about Rs. 600/750 for the tickets alone! Putting in other expenses, a simple evening out at the movies can cost us around Rs. 1500/- which is quite a tidy sum, Kiran. Its become plain and simply unaffordable for us…so what I do is I only go when the movie in particular cannot really be watched at home…like Spiderman, Batman, Narnia…all these kids movies with spectacular special effects which can be enjoyed only in big screen and surround sound.

'Spiderman, Batman'--I too loved these Sudipta. My son took me to 'the Dark Knight'[Batman] , with the off-hand remark that I should tag along for company because he could not promise how it would. be WHat a surprise! I loved the racy movie.He had known it beforehand and was sure that I would love it and wanted to surprise me. But, like what you said, this flm going was an exciting outing that w e looked forward to in our college/school days when our uncles an d aunts came home for vacation. I have also had great fun with cousins etc.., in my childhood days when we used to jump along and see these movies , come home, dance and sing and have great fun.I used to sing fim songs very well and used to sing and dance to a 'possessed song' with my long hair flying over my face and screaming whenever I had had a head bath[if some good company was around]My mother naturally used to come out with 'Enough! Stop it! and this was even greater fun..Still she recounts the song and 'How Kala used to sing and dance to this 'spirited' song! Thank God none of my students would see this.

Sudipta! You can afford to watch a good movie (like "3 Idiots' on a theater) once in a six months to fulfill your desire of watching a movie on a theater.

Hi sudipta, the same was the case with us, family weddings and summer vacations were great fun, watching movies with all the extended family and friends.I am sure the adult movies of those days would be kid stuff now lol...I remember a time when we all went to a local theater and since we were about 12 children with half ticket we were made to sit in the front on the floor...Those were the days never to come back.I agree now adays it is a pain to go out anywhere with all the crowd and traffic also the increased cost as you point out...have a great evening

Kiran, watching movie at a theater with friends and near and dear one is really enjoyable. But I have forgotten to watch movies in a cinema hall. Now there is no proper atmosphere to watch movie in a theater. I can see movie of my choice in DVD player.

It is fun to watch movies with small children .I used to love watching all the animated films like Jungle book,Bambi,Beauty and the beast with my children .They still love to watch those films. Another thing Bhanu , is that the more relaxed time you spend with your children the stronger the bond that develops over the years

Kiran! We are all diehard fans of Rajini Kant and his movies are definitely some of those which we always look forward to seeing on a big screen.Similarly, if it is some thing speciallike a Kamal, Maniratnam, JamesBond, Amirkhan special, we like to see it in the theatre.I do not particularly care for the Coke or popcorn though, I used to buy some cake or something earlier when I was in Trichy and my son was a little kid.Here in Mumbai , we get the American corn at times , but after having made this at home with the same seasoning, I find it a big waste . Why multiplexes! I have very fond memories of having watched movies in God forsaken theatres, where we had to knudge our way in a single line queue in Krishnagiri[a quaint lovely place where I stayed some 22 years ago ].Watching movies in theatres is great fun. I attribute this fun to the feeling of joy, the sense of anticipation we have in going out with our loved ones to the theatre, somewhere out[a good outing].I too never did mind the trouble of booking tickets in advance[earlier in Trichy I had to go out to the theatre for this sake].Now it has become simpler with online bookings. My last film in a theatre was '3 idiots' .I was planning to see Ravan which did not materialise because I,lost interest after getting to know the story and because I heard it was not up to the mark. I shall come to Mangalore Kiran or you come here.We shall go together and have fun.

Thanks Kiran! I wrote the lengthy response and after that I felt I always get on to stories. But thta is something that I cannot help too. It is great that you too watch Rajni movies.They are simple , unadulterated fun that need no exercis of the brain whatsoever.And we all love his mannerisms and punch dialogues.Do see 'Arunachalam' and Padaiyappa if you get the chance.

Kala, trust you to come up with something interesting I too like watching Rajnikanth movies. I have seen both Sivaji and Chandramukhi in one of the oldest theaters called Elgin in Bangalore because it is close to where my sister lives and we all had a ball watching them.Besides being far too expensive, Multiplexes are always packed and it is a pain to get tickets for any film there un;less you book in advance ..Rajni btw is fabulous with his typical mannerisms and stunts....Kala plz plz do come to Mangalore and I promise I will visit you in Mumbai.Planning to come there after nearly 9 years now...Its been raining for almost 3 days now kala without stopping ...I went for a walk just now holding an umbrella and got completely drenched ., but no doubt enjoyed it - have a nice evening kala

Hi Kiran! You are very correct in your observation that the joy of watching a movie in a theater is beyond comparison with watching it on DVD etc. If the movie is good or outstanding, it is always fun to enjoy the scene on the big big screen with stereo phonic sound and life size images. The atmosphere in a theater is complete, when all are watching a movie with intent. You could only concentrate on the screen, because you have nothing else to do and you have spent money to watch the movie, however, while at home, one may not get the same kind of peace, atmosphere and enjoyment, which one gets on the big screen. I prefer watching good movies in Theater, like I saw 'Paa' and "3 Idiots' on big screen and I got my money's worth and my family too enjoyed the movies. Have a great day! Deepak

Hi Deepak, thats so very true ! one cannot concentrate fully on films while watching at home.We even switch off the cell phone while watching a movie in a theater so that it does not disturb others.In recent years I loved watching Titanic, i must have cried buckets in the end, so moving was it.,.. the other film I thoroughly enjoyed was Blood Diamonds which I saw with my children.It was such an intense film...The last new hindi film I have seen is probably Eklavya which was reasonably good - you too have a wonderful evening deepak and all the best

Quite the same here. I agree about the story line, actors and director part. I too go to see a movie in theatre on big screen only if it's really 'worth it', because I like to enjoy good movies on the big screen and kind of 'fall' into the movie even more. Though sometimes I really hate it when I go to see a good movie and I have people who can't shut up for the life of them in there. that's the annoying part of it while at home you can enjoy it quitely. I too haven't been in the theatre so often lately as I've been years ago, but still I try to see all the good movies on big screen when I can. Last one I saw was Avatar which was actually very good, though at first I though it's too overhyped before I cactually saw it.

Hi, I too loved Avatar and I am sure it is best watched on the big screen for all those awesome special effects..The audience at times can be highly irritating no doubt but that is one of the drawbacks that we need to put up with - thanks a lot for the response and enjoy your evening

just like said ,goode story ,good actors ,director ,this type of film i will go to watch it in theater,and other films ,i prefer to download from internet or buy a dvd to watch ,because in china ,watch a film is not very cheap ,if it is directed from a famous director , it often sells over 100 RMB... for me ,not big films ,i won't go to cinema ,but it is rather expensive.... i just sit at home ,watch the dvd with some snacks ,and i think it is the best way to watch the small films

I enjoy watching movies on the theater big screen. Movies just seem to come alive as they jump out at you on the big screen. It's convenient to buy the dvd and watch the movie at home. it just isn't the same feeling this way.

I would rather go to a theatre and watch the movie than sit at home and watch it in my tv. I love the big screen, the popcorn, the soft drinks and the experience as a whole. Most of the time, we go as a family and we love it. We like it especially if it is a night show.

it depends on the movie... like it's a love/romantic one, i'd prefer watching it at home... get some privacy. you know what mean. :) but if it's an epic movie, some kind of an adventure one or a movie full of special effects then theaters are a must!
@kiran8 (15348)

Hi jamuls, of course it does depend on the movie because you don't want to spend money on some mediocre stuff which you might regret later.I love watching old films at home just by myself...but as you say the ones with the grand stuff on the big screen..

yes i enjoy seeing movie on the big screens and multiplexes.the clarity is so much that we can enjoy.the most happiest thing in bigscreens is seeing the movie by eating the popcorn and having drinks.i book the tickets in advance and go for each and every movie.

Hi ellechoi, thanks a lot for your response there are some superb old cinema halls in India which are more than 100 years old and have those old fashioned screens , of course they may not have the modern day digital sound system, but they have such a glorious past.Nowadays of course we go to a multiplex and watch a movie..

Hi loca, thanks a lot for your response. It is no doubt profitable to watch movies at home esp from a site where you can watch it or download it for free...Watching a film on the big screen is not an everyday experience , once in a while when we feel like having the excitement ...

Hi angel, thats true, the excitement you feel with special sound effects and the large images is something else altogether .I agre that most of the multiplexes sell their snacks at an exorbitent price and do not allow you to carry your own eats either...Since going to the theater is a rare experience you dont mind spending once in a while ...

I only bother watching something on the big screen if it's not a cartoon or at the very least it's 3D, if I've been highly anticipating it (Like the Eragon movie which I highly regret paying to watch in the cinema - it so wasn't worth it)or if I'm going with friends and the movie seems remotely interesting. Other times I'd just wait for the DVD, rent it and have fun at home where it doesn't feel very taboo to talk and comment about the movie with friends and family - with not-so-expensive snacks (compared to cinema food)
@kiran8 (15348)

18 Aug 10
Hi kylina, I agree with you - it is really not worth spending so much of your hard earned money on watching a movie in the theater unless it is something that you have been waiting for with a lot of special effects and the like - food too is always expensive.I normally keep out of multiplexes where a lot of tax and other amount is added on to eatables, prefer going to local theaters..
17 Aug 10
I am the complete opposite and enjoy the stillness of watching a movie from home where I won't be disturbed by others, can sit comfortably, pause the movie if I need a toilet break and can eat what ever I like and not those snacks offered at inflated prices. I would even say that the majority of mainstream movies aren't actually that much better when watched on a big screen as to a home set up, with only a handful really benefiting from the big screen and big sound, as well as the atmosphere of a packed out cinema.
