Bandwidth is just like a channel or as the name suggest the width of the channel allocated to you by your ISP(Internet Service provider). So, you internet connection speed depends on your internet bandwidth. The speed of internet is directly proportional to the bandwidth. So, if you have higher bandwidth, your internet speed will be faster. Bandwidth is basically a channel or space allocated to you by your ISP. Whatever things you do on internet has to pass through this channel. So, if your channel is wide(more bandwidth), then your data transfer or downloading will take less time and vice-versa. Hope i've cleared your doubts regarding bandwidth.

I think you have some confusion related to bandwidth. So let me clear that first. The speed which your ISP gives is 256kbps. Now note that kbps. kbps=kilo bits per second. And the download speed you get is actually ~40kBps not 40kbps. Now note kBps. kBps= kilo Bytes per second and 1 Byte = 8 bits So divide 256kbps by 8 to get result in kBps. This will result in 32kBps and that's the download speed which your downloader shows to you. Just notice that small 'b' and capital 'B'. Its all Bits and Bytes game... and some people get confused with this thing... So, i hope i've cleared your doubts.

Download TCP/IP optimizer and set it up correctly, then apply it. This method is promoted by professionals so it is supposed to work very well but of course it won't overclock your internet speed limit. If you need even more speed you're going to have to wait until your country's internet infrastructure improves or you're going to have to show your wallet :P

the bandwidth is the space allocated for you internet/surfing needs. It is what you have paid for from your ISP/internet service provided. If you paid for a 1mbps speed, you given a direct link for a 1mbps link. Everytime you open your computer and modem you will connected to your assigned bandwidth. As the saying goes--If you need more internet speed you need more bandwidth. And we need to pay more for a higher bandwidth.
