The Subway/Metro or Rail system

I myself am i native new yorker. I consider the subway to be mostly safe, even late at night. I take the subway to work and to school. Of course occasionally you get the angry homeless person, or crazy person who pushes people onto the tracks because they are all high on drugs, but that rarely happens. Some people i used to know where not even allowed to take the subway at night, which i just couldn't understand. And when i hear outsiders talk about the subway, it seems almost menacing. Anyways what are your feelings on your local subway system, and do you think its safe?
