Prolonged bottle feeding

I have 6 and 7 years old children both are still dependent from bottle feeding. Although they are eating complete meals from breakfast to dinner, they always ask for milk in their bottles. I know that we are to blame with their unusual habit we have tried to keep all the bottles but my big girl found out where they were kept. They have promised to stop it when their birthdays come this October. We still have almost 2 months to wait.
What could be the best age to stop a child from bottle feeding?

I can't find anything bad in drinking milk in their bottle util they like doing it. At least it is a way to be sure they do drink milk, since I've heared of children stopping drinking it if not that way. In some time they will start making comparison with friends, and they will decide they are "adult" enough not to need it anymore. If you prohibite it now they will miss it...
Have a nice day

I think your kids are too old for bottle feeding my friend.. My daughter stopped bottle feeeding when she was 3 . Now she's 4. I can imagine the hassle it brings you.. I trained my little one in drinking through a glass and she adapted to it well, making it easy to shift her from bottles to glasses of milk.. I think the best age for a child to stop bottle feeding will be 3 to 4 years old..Because 4 is the ideal age for pre-school.. But actually I read from a site that bottle feeding can be stopped as soon as the baby starts to sit up.
What you did was correct. Keeping the bottle from the child's sight is one way, though you may have to try to do it again and this time, make sure they won't find it. As soon as your kids gets hungry and longs for milk, they will finally agree that they should drink from the glass instead. This may take a couple of days. It may need some getting used to it..

You're right there, friend. That was very hard for me and my mom who also prepared their milk. Thanks also for the link. That's very good of you. I am happy to say that my son had a serious talk with his pediatrician and he agreed to stop now. He also influenced his sister to stop, too.

Thanks, bingskee. When I started this discussion, I found out another thread about it with a long run of negative responses. I thank you all for considering my feelings though this problem is our fault as their parents. There's no one to blame but us. It is really our will power to have control them when they are still young.

Apparently it is a comfort zone for the children, one draw back is that the bottle is going to ruin the development of proper teeth alignment. Their gums and teeth are going to continue to extrovert into what we call buck tooth.
I would suggest you ween them from the bottle, by that I mean one bottle, next 1 cup for a couple days then only cup. There are childrens cups you could buy that would be enjoyable for them to hold and look at. Do this until they are comfortable and only take the cup. They are called sippy cups.

Thanks for your suggestion. I still have a 2-yr old son and I will do my best to wean him and replace his baby bottle to sippy cup.

I know it's hard to stop a child from the bottle. We tried to do it when our older kids were 4-5 years old but my parents told me that they were still babies. When their siblings came along we got them to leave the bottle. Have you tried one of those sippy cups? It's a great alternative for the bottle.

I would grab the bottles out of their mouths and give them a cup or a sippie cup and tell them that only babies drink milk out of the bottle.
Make it sound like drinking a bottle at six or seven is so horrible that their friends would laugh at them (even if it is not true.)
They will scream at first, but it is a habit.
Six and seven year olds are too old. I stopped giving the bottle at six months when our sons threw their bottles away. And then I started on the sippy cup and by two years old, they were drinking out of a regular plastic glass.
By the way, if you are hiding the bottle because there is one on the way or you have a little one already, watch and see when he or she throws away the bottle, that is the time to start on the sippy cup.

My wife tells me kids should be weaned from bottle feeding by age 3. We had no trouble weaning our kids we just fooled them into drinking from a cup. My wife began by adding a bit of water to the bottle and filling it with milk. Each day she increased the water until the kids lost interest. The milk in a cup was right out of the carton, and tasted much better. The kids never caught on, and were very soon content to drink their milk from a cup.

My children also were on the bottle for a long while. While my daughter found it difficult to wean off it;;my son snapped out of it earlier. Prolonged bottle feeding will also affect teeth growth. Best to stop them after a few months when they can drink out of a cup.

I have 6 younger siblings and as i have observed with what my mom did.., all of us stop bottle feeding as soon as we reached our first birthdays or we can walk on our own already.., because.., my mother believes that prolonged bottle feeding is not good for the teeth.., she would feed us with solid foods and eat like normal adult.., only with a soft diet of course..=)
