I do think controversy on a film does help the film because then people will go see it just to see what the big fuss is.

Yes, because some films that are controversial do better at the box office. I have seen films that people have been told not to see, do better than other films because when you tell people not to see a movie, it just makes them want to see it that much more. When the Catholic Church told people not to see "Dogma", everyone went and saw it because they wanted to see what all the fuss was about. The same for "The Passion of the Christ", the Jewish community told people not to see that film, but again, same rules apply, everyone wanted to see that film.
