Spaghetti and chili

I am the family garbage disposal. I am pretty much the only person in the family who will eat anything (if it's people food, that is, I'm not into eating toothpaste or whatever). I'm the only one who eats leftovers. There are few foods that I don't like, and I will even eat those (ie Brussel sprouts, teriyaki sauce) if they're placed in front of me.
And then there are weird (from other people's perspectives) foods. Elvis Presley was famous for liking fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Well my favorite weird food is Spaghetti and chili. I discovered it as a teenager at Bob's Big Boy.
You boil up some noodles and plop some chili on top of it (I like mine with cheese, no onions). Sorry, Irish, I know it's probably a "Yankee" way of eating chili, but I like the stuff.
What's your favorite food concoction that most other folks would consider weird?

I always thought that was strange too, but I learned that it is a very common dish in some of the northern states. I would have thought it weird too but my friend says it is very often consumed in the north!

Actually, Dawnald, I've never had Spaghetti and Chili but it sounds as if it would be delicious. Doesn't really sound all that weird at all. Like you, I eat just about everything. There are very few foods that I really just can't bring myself to eat. Tripe comes to mind as one of them. As for weird foods that I eat, I don't really think anything I eat is all that weird. People have commented on my peanut butter and cream cheese sandwiches until they try them.....they are awesome. Even better is the grilled cream cheese and olive sandwich ....amazing!!

Hi Dawn,
You have a long way to go as garbage disposal. I´m still one in spite of living alone. Every time we have a family get together with the family, the grandchildren (even the grownups) think that my plate is where food they don´t like can be placed. I said enough last barbecue. My eldest daughter bought some obnoxious turkey sausage for Diego (10) who had his cholesterol a little high. She is a psychologist so he bought only turkey ones for everyone . There was a saugage theory that day! The sausage started to pile in my dish not leaving room for a wonderful chicken I was waiting for. That´s when I yelled!
Many people consider that I shouldn´t eat interiors ( tripes, brain and so on) or some strong seafood not many people like. I also love meat from strange animals and don´t mind trying new things. In my last trip we went for the day to Perú and one of our friends who was born in Arica asked for deep fried guinea pig ( a peruvian dish). My friends fron Santiago looked in horror as I stole a bite and found it very good.
I haven´t eaten snakes or lizards yet but who knows. I do find good the taste of human meat though: I bite my fingers and fingernails

The turkey sausage or my fingers? None of them do, in fact. My fingers are delicious, specially after I quit smoking.
Oh! You meant the guinea pig! It was far better than chicken. I had frog legs once and will have chicken instead any day. I did not pursue that anymore. But the guinea pig was more tender than chicken and the taste was soft yet distinctive. We don´t have that in Chile. Noone would eat it, I suppose. It´s not in our culture. We do eat a lot of game though (at least those who go hunting or can pay the prices of that meat). I don´t buy that for evident reasons but I like most of it.

Hi dawnald!.
I have many strange favorite food like water snail curry, water snail usually found in paddy field, if you know how to cook its really tasty even better than French escargot (popular French cuisine thats made it with snail too).
We have many strange food thats in western world consider weird like cooking banana heart. or eating a rabbit ( I never really eat this, I am not dare because I had bunny as pet when I was child ).

Isn't chilli basically a chilli flavoured minced meat dish? Maybe I'm wrong. I always think of chilli as a pungent plant of the capsicum family but I know you Americans have a dish called chilli. I think of it as having a tomato base with ground beef and kidney beans and chilli as well as onions and other things maybe.
So to me that's almost similar to a bolognese sauce which is of course served with pasta/spaghetti...ergo, how is that weird? Now what Elvis liked re the peanut butter fried thing...that IS weird.

That's more or less it, except the seasoning is totally different from pasta sauce...

My kids are the garbage disposal.. I typically force them to eat the left overs for lunch and whatever.. that is unless it's something I love, like meatloaf! I had it for dinner last night, lunch today, and will have it again for dinner tonight to avoid the hamburger helper I'm making cause I'm lazy.
I happen to like peanut butter and banana sandwiches. I also like putting potato chips on sandwiches, my mom used to do that and it's good. I like dipping fries in barbeque sauce. When I have beefy macaroni (what we call goulash, elbows, sauce, and beef) I add a can of corn to the mix because that's how mom made it, and I'll only eat it on a slice of bread with butter as if it's a sandwich.
Hubby is weirder.. he eats scrambled eggs with potato chips.. or he'll put a slice of american cheese on the chips (only plain ones though.. flavored chips are eaten without added foods).

Sounds more interesting than my husband. Breakfast food is for breakfast. Pizza has to be served hot. How boring....

I dont think Spagetti with chili sauce is a werid thing. I like to putting eggs, noodles and a little bit of soy sauce and fry them together and eating them with some cheese and tomato sauce.

Were almost the same. I do love spaghetti and usually I used a lot of tomatoes for the sauce. Then I also put chili and spices like onion and garlic. Well, I have been doing this for quite a time already so and so that my family would prefer this over other spaghetti sauces.

Hi ya dawny
Well I guess I am a bit like you that I am always the one to finish food off, the boys won't even have seconds! They eat what is put on their plate and that is it! I have learnt to cook the correct amounts now so there are no left overs or else I would get as big as a house haha. I see nothing wrong with spaghetti and chilli, sounds good to me but then I guess I am just as weird as you then haha. Hmm I like to eat tinned tomatoes with buttered toast, is that weird?

Half the time, the twins don't even finish, especially Naomi...
No, that doesn't sound all that weird!

I don’t know how weird it is to put a slice of bread in the left over cooking oil after meat or chicken has cooked, soaking it right up and eating it! It is very bad for you I know that much, all that fat and oil but it is so yummy! When I was a kid my mother used to pour a little olive oil on a dish and I used to dip my bread in it…The amazing thing is that these days I don’t have high cholesterol or resemble the size of a house!

I am the same way with my kids. They usually start eating something and just leave it on their plates when they can't finish it. Specially because they know that dad is their to eat their left overs.
I've actually thought of that. But I've never really known anybody who would put chili on spaghetti. I think I would try it. I would start with a canned chili. The next time we have spaghetti, I'll leave some for experimentation.
My word concoction is soupless-soup. Sometimes I would make one of those instant soups, but I would throw out the soup and just eat the noodles.

Hello dawn
I really like the word 'family garbage disposal', my wife always over cooks and gives the excess to the maid servant next morning, on many days she gives to cows on the street, these cows have no home..
When my sons got married, things changed a little, for example, what ever cooked rise is excess, my second daughter in law will mess that with salt, onion pieces, green chilly, spread over non-stick pan and fry..
It tastes really yummy.. i like this..
Thanks for sharing.
Welcome always.
Cheers.

I discovered a really weird one that I liked just the other day actually, and I am not even sure what made me try it. Now I am not sure how this will translate for people in other countries and if you have these but it is a packet of Twiglets dipped into Nutella Chocolate spread..it is delicious :o) I think it's the contrast of the salty and the sweet - i don't really care, lol...all I know is it's lovely :o)
