light tolerance while sleeping?

I was wondering how your tolerance to light is while sleeping? Are you like me where you can't stand the flicker of the tv if you fell asleep while watching it? Or the light you keep on over night in a hall even if dim bugs you? These things bug me! I can't stand alot of light while I'm trying to sleep. I prefer things pitch black & quiet to sleep well. But of course I do have to tolerate some light so the kids if they need to get up can see where they are going, not that I want to but for safety sake.

I can go to sleep anywhere, light or dark, loud or quiet. But, believe it or not I am a very light sleeper. Any noise will wake me up. If the t.v. is on, I can go to sleep with it on and I guess I don't wake up if my husband changes the channel, but if he turns the volume up even a little bit I will wake up. If my husband has his light turned on, on his nightstand, I can go to sleep. However if the hall light goes on while I am sleeping I will wake up. It is weird I don't know why I am like that. I guess ever since I had kids I am this way.

I suppose I see your point in that is unusual. I know I used to have the timer on the tv to shut off after I've fallen asleep. I used to get po'd and wake up around midnight if I knew the thing was still on it would drive me nuts being on though I fell asleep with it on. I dunno on that one either.

That is true we do have to adapt to our surroundings and the people within them. You are fortunate to be able to sleep in any light condition. thanks for the post & welcom to myLot.

Lights used to effect me, although my wife prefers a light to be on and so I have become used to it. I would prefer to sleep without any light, although this isn't always possible and I respect my wife's need.
Really it depends on what the light is, I don't appreciate other peoples straying onto my property.
I don't like lamps from the outside lightening my house, garden or other rooms as this is something I personally prefer to avoid and when a street lamp shines into your room well you might as well have a light on in the first place.

That's nice of you to respect your wife's request for some light while she sleeps.
I don't have much lighting outside my home either other than a few solar lights. And thankfully we live in a city that does not have street lights other than at the end of the block/intersection so those lights do not bother me. Or when in doubt a good investment in some window shades will solve that problem should it occur.

My husband rearranged our bedroom awhile back, and put our bed on the opposite side of the room. Where I lay on my bed I can see straight through the window on the other wall and into the front windows of the house across the way.. and she leaves her dang porch light on all night long! Thankfully I don't normally sleep on my back, so I rarely see it. I don't leave any lights on inside the house. The kids know where the bathroom is and have never had an accident trying to get there.. of course it's a small house so not much to worry about.

That would drive me nuts! As I sleep in all sorts of positions during the night form my back, side, stomach.... whatever is comfy... so I think I would eventually see that. My hubby re-arranged our room too around when DS was born and I get stuck by the heater... can't stand it in winter so yet another reason I co-sleep.. I coudn't take that furnace blaring on me at night & he wouldn't budge to switch sides. Hopefully he'll move the room around again as the kids are too big for this co-sleeping business.

I can't do that co-sleeping stuff. My hubby is lucky I let him in bed with me, lol. I just don't seem to sleep well when I'm sharing my bed... so on nights when I'm not feeling well I tend to send hubby to the sofa so I can get a good night sleep. He doesn't usually mind and will even offer to do it if he knows how much I need the sleep.

I was able to sleep with all sorts of things on when I was younger. Fell asleep quite often to watching tv or radio to help get me to relax to get some sleep. Though unlike yourself I've never gotten nightmares due to lack of light or noise while I sleep.

I was a fairly good sleeper except the light thing. Then I had my kids so I'm used to almost "sleeping with one eye open" at night.

I used to be a really light sleeper. Any light or slight noise would awaken me. And I didn't even really move in the night. I'd lay still all through the night and morning. But now that I've gotten older, things have changed. I have more pain, and because of other health problems I don't sleep that much. So when I DO sleep, I tend to fall deeper alseep than I used to. A TV going in the background doesn't bother me, and sometimes it kind of lulls me into sleep.

I, too, prefer the room to be dark when I want to sleep. If I've gone to bed before the sun is completely down, or if I'm trying to nap in the daytime, I frequently pull the covers over my head to shut out as much light as possible.

You could always do like I do and set the tv on timer to shut off after a few hours that way you don't waste so much electricity when you are not watching.

For me the absolute worst is the street light that is outside our house. We finally ended up putting a towel over the window along with the blind because that light was driving me insane. In addition to that, I'm not able to go to sleep in front of the television and I have to have my bedroom door shut when I am going to go to sleep because the light does bother me. For my husband all of this is quite the opposite.

I'm used to sleeping with the lights on, because my baby sleeps beside me in the bed. And I don't want to wake up and won't be able to see him immediately. But I still do prefer dim lights sometimes, when I go to sleep after a particlalrly tiring day.

I do not like light when I am trying to sleep. I like the ambiance of pitch black. Everything seems to quiet. I am a light sleeper. When I wake up in the middle of the night it's very hard for me to get back. My husband do not like the lights turn off when he sleeps so we have a problem during our first year of marriage. We have an agreement now that when we sleep it should be not too dark and not too much light. I sleep in the dark side of the room.

It's hard for me to get back to sleep as well. And getting up like this started when I was expecting my first child... I slept so hard the first half of the night that when I would wake up I'd be on the pc or I'd be working in setting up her room and clothes ect.

I don't really like light when I am sleeping. I like it dark. The only like I will tolerate is whatever is outside, but I have my blinds, so whatever is outside isn't much.

I need things to be pitch dark when I am asleep. If someonebody turns the light on, or the dawn sunlight manages to get through the window, I am wide awake. Strange though, because this doesn't happen when all the lights are on and I am watching TV in my relaxing chair! I will fall asleep very quickly then! _Derek

It's impossible for me to sleep with any kind of light on. I do stay up late on Friday nights as I love to take in a late movie and there are times when I am drifting off to sleep in front of the television and I really do notice that flicker of light from the tv! When I eventually arrive at this point though I just give up watching the movie and decide to hit the sack immediately.
I generally sleep ok though without waking up during the night. I guess when you start to fall asleep in front of the television then your body is really saying 'hey, take me to bed!' Andrew

when i am dog tired, i can sleep even with lights on and noise to booth... but on my normal sleep, the lights have to be out as i could hardly get a good sleep with lights on or even a slight noise can drive me nuts on my bed...

I am a sensitive sleeper, also i can't stand a single flicker of light wile sleeping. You know while sleeping we do not want any disturbances, like light. Whereas light is a disturbance for us it is also safety measure for kids. It is quite normal. Adults don't want any light around them while sleeping but 90% kids want.HAPPY POSTING....
