When I was younger and healthier, I could - when I first got in - swim the width of the city pool that I went to regularly, but I sure couldn't do it now.
http://tinyurl.com/northwestpoolaustin switch to satellite view and zoom in to see the pool...
on the other hand, those little back yard pools, I could probably swim the length easily and the width twice...

lol..I can't swim to save my life...let alone swim underwater!
My son does it. Why he did it is a question I have to ask him. He learnt to swim on his own and so I never asked him if there was a reason for doing something. He keeps telling me about different techniques....I listen half-heartedly because I don't understand. I should pay attention in future :)

Pay attention and learn to swim! Living on a island that is more wet than dry I think that everyone ought to be able to swim a little. Every year people fall into rivers and lakes and drown because they don't have that skill. It's worth it and you can take your son swiming then!

I always loved swimming underwater. How else to pretend to be Jacques Cousteau? One had to prepare to spend a lot of time underwater to find 'treasure', right? When I was little and went to the beach with my family, I frequently found paper money stuck in the seaweed. All thanks to the men who tended to swim in their shorts, without emptying their pockets first.

When I'd collected enough money, I bought a divers mask. Saw more than one guy who should have been wearing either a smaller size shorts or at least a belt. We won't even talk about teens on dates...lol. Never mentioned those parts to my mom, otherwise she would have taken the mask away. I was able to rent the mask to my older brother. Always good to have a few favors owed.

I still "TRY" to swim the length just to out do myself and I WILL do it no matter how long it takes, or at least enjoy the pool.

Do kiddie pools count?..lol But Yes I have, We had to do that in High School. Also..I have done it in the smaller pools too. But those shouldn't count..lol. We had to do it for our grade. No I still don't do it with the big pools or lakes..but I guess we learned to swim better, faster, and built up our lungs.

Yes I did.
Just for something to do.
I wanted To see if I could make it all the way across.
That I couldn't make it all the way across.
No.
I also used to lie on my back in the bath, completely submerged. I would count to see how long I could hold my breath.

I used to be able to swim underwater pretty well. I could swim the entire length of an average size pool underwater with no problem at all. I was also good at diving down to the bottom and picking things up. We would toss quarters into the water, then dive down there and get all of them. It was a good way to practice staying underwater. I haven't tried to do any diving in years, but I can still swim long distances pretty well. I am not a very fast swimmer, but I have done the mile-swim on several occasions, and I can probably still do it. I had to do it a few times for merit badges and rescue training when I was a Boy Scout. I don't remember how long it took me to do the mile-swims, but I always completed the swims strongly...

We practiced a lot of simulated rescues using live people. It was helpful to get to practice using real people instead of just pretending...

That's impressive. I loved to swim and we had a private pool locally that I could use as a boy. I can't afford to run one now unfortunately. I got a life saver badge for retrieving bricks from the bottom of a pool whilst wearing pyjamas. I didn't even know that bricks could swim!!!

I don't go swimming very often. I think the last time was in Georgian Bay a few years ago, actually. Pools are full of chemicals and other people's 'stuff', yecky!
I don't know how long I can hold my breath and haven't tested it lately. I don't have much to prove to anyone any longer it seems.

I agree about the pools Annie although I have been fortunate enough to swim in private ones quite often. I have an allergy to chlorine and that takes some of the fun out of it. Too right you don't have anything to prove. You are a very positive role model. Mwah XXXX

A very small pool, maybe... If I did it, it was just because.

Hi PIKEY.Gosh I use to swim the lenghth of a pool underwater, when I was a teenager and fit and healthy and well before I got into the bad habit of smoking. I could not do that now of course , I would be lucky to keep myself afloat nowadays lol. cheers sue

I used to do it just because I loved being under the water. I loved the water so much (still do) that if they'd offered me gills to go with my lungs I would have gladly gotten them! If there were any pools around I would certainly be swimming but I haven't lived around a pool for years. It is so relaxing to be underwater where it is nearly silent, it feels soft and just kind of wraps around you. That's why I used to swim across the pool underwater.

Hello, Pikey. I'm a complete wuss, and I don't like putting my head underwater, so no, I haven't done it. I can swim like a fish, and I go in our pool for at least an hour every day, but I didn't learn to swim until I was in my late thirties.
When I was a kid at school, someone held me ynderwater until I was unconscious, and it took 30 years and another husband to help me conquer my fear of water and learn to swim. Husband Mark 1 was quite happy that I couldn't swim, as it made him feel superior, but the second model taught me to swim, as he said at least if I could swim I could get myself out of trouble if I needed to.
I love swimming now, and I'll do it whenever I can, but I can't go underwater, or jump in. I don't think I'll ever conquer that. BTW, why have you got a mature content tag? Just wondering ...

Hello again, Pikey. Well, he was pretty pathetic - that's why he got the elbow. Shame about the allergy - I've just spent a couple of hours in the pool. It's about 35 degrees here.

As part of my fitness regimen I do a lot of swimming. I did in high school and college. Now I do it as part of my staying fit and I can say that I like to hold my breath fr long lengths of time as I find it very therapeutic. It is a sense to me like I am weeding out the world if only for a few minutes then I catch my breath and do it some more.

I tried doing it to test how far I could go. So far I could only reach 3/4 of the swimming pool. I tried using different techniques like using my arms and legs or just plain dolphin swimming, it's really hard . As far as I can remember, I haven't reach the end of the pool even once.
