Which Way?

I love tomato soup. Can't stand tomatos, make me sick, but I love tomato soup from a can. Go figure. When you make tomato soup from a can, do you add water or milk or both? I remember Mom always made it with milk which made it nice and creamy, almost too thick. I've tried just water and think it's nasty. For me, half milk and half water is perfect. Just like Goldilocks. So ... milk, water or both?

In keeping with my habit of never buying anything more than I need, I use water and always have except with the kids were at home and they drank milk. If I bought milk now it would spoil from disuse. I refuse to buy the overpriced smaller containers--a quart is as expensive as a gallon!! I actually like it with water, guess it's just what one gets used to. I don't use a lot of water because I like it a bit thicker. I don't really care for tomatoes either but love the soup and ketchup. However, I'm slowly beginning to eat them in salads and such and I find that they taste quite good if I don't think about them--I hate that slimey stuff filled with seeds and always make sure I don't get any of that!

I understand about not wanting to waste the milk. I don't use much milk either and buy it by the half gallon and even then will occasionally have a cup or two left that goes down the drain. I'll use a little ketchup on some things (hot dogs and french fries), but don't like tomato juice of V8 either. But tomato soup is one of the only soups I'll eat from a can.

Before my son came back home I was letting the milk sour. He drinks lots of milk though, so there is always some to have. I have frozen partial containers of sour milk, because I will use it for baking. I buy canned milk so I have it in small portions.

Some people just are intimate with milk!! My neighbor's brother in law does our yards and 6 others on the block, while his wife is a waitress at a diner. They drink 4-6 glasses of milk per day!! They are both very active--except for the husband who spends four days a week with his laptop at work playing Farmville and monitoring for bad guys!! Lest anyone thing he ignores his job, he has caught all attempted break-in's in the 6 years he has been working for them!!

I use skim milk, and it doesn't get too thick, I think it's just right. I make a grilled cheese sandwich to dip in the soup too.

I love tomato soup. It is actually my favorite soup. I have tried it with milk, with just water, and both. I do like it with both half and half creamy but not to much..I guess they are a little Goldilocks in us all.

Well, it also helps it be less fat too. That is a plus.

Half and half is definitely my preference. I'm sure I'd like it with all milk, but think it would be too thick. If someone made it for me I'd eat it, but I still prefer both.

Oh I hate it with water, it has to be milk all the way..It's thicker and creamier and I never understood why someone would make it with water. I never tries it half and half, but I am not much of a soup person anyways.

Same here, water just doesn't work for me. I suppose if I liked tomatoes it might be different, but I really like half and half. I think I started doing it years ago to save a few calories and just stuck with it.

I make mine with just water. Maybe I will try half water, half milk one day to see how it tastes since you like it. My mom made it with water when I was growing up so that is probably why I like it that way... same with you Marie Anne. Regarding you not liking tomatoes, but liking tomato soup, my son is the exact same way. He cannot stand tomatoes but likes the soup. lol

Before last month, I had never made tomato soup. But, my niece came to visit and one of her favorite things is grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup. So, I made her that meal. I used milk instead of water because I thought it would add more flavor and make the soup creamier. I didn't taste it, but she seemed to like it. I think you idea of half milk and half water is a great idea!

I am more likely to put milk in it in the winter. Love it with grilled cheese sandwich, and a glass of grape juice. I do not know why. I bet cooking the tomatoes into soup tames some of the acid. Probably half milk, half water is a good combo. Sometimes we stir salsa into ours and serve it with tortilla chips.

I too love tomato soup. Soup as the western concept knows it, is not the same as what is had in India. I don’t know the reason but I think India being a more warm country, hot soup is not very welcome, except in winter. Our soups are mainly vegetarian or pulse based and had with either flat bread or with rice, as part of the main meal. So to a foodie like me, soup is a treat, so to say, prepared once in a while. We do go for the packed soup powders though that comes nowhere close to home-made soups. Winter is the time when my mom makes wonderful tomato soup at home. Its very basic with fried onions and ginger paste tempering, she makes it thick by adding very little water, she puts some boiled noodles in it and tops it with a blob of butter and sprinkled pepper…its yummy with buttered bread specially on winter nights when we don’t feel like cooking anything elaborate. BTW…I’ve never heard of milk being added…I’ve always thought that the milk would curdle if we add it to something sour like tomatoes!!!

When I make tomato soup I usually use 1% milk, because that is what we usually have on hand. I also add salsa to it for a little kick. I also serve it with a grilled cheese sandwich or two.

I prefer tomatoes, fresh from the vine. But as for the canned soup, I use water... tastes more like homemade.

I do enjoy tomatoes, so that is why I usually add salsa to my tomato soup. Sometimes when it is ready to serve I will put some Worcestershire Sauce in it, too.

See, since I don't like tomatoes, I don't like homemade tomato soup. Milk takes some of the tomato-y taste away, I'm sure.

hi ldyjarhead I also love tomato soup but I got the Campbells cream of tomato soup and it says to just add water as it has cream in it. I love it that way asit is thick and tomatoey too. I love ripe raw tomatoes. maybe you never had a really ripe juicy tomato? anyway my mom made it with skim milk andthat was good too. I am so fond of tomatoes I would probably try all three ways of making it. lol.

I'm the same way. OK, I will eat tomatoes sometimes on a sandwich if they are not too soft, and occasionally on a nice salad, again, if they're not too soft, but in general I don't like fresh tomatoes that much either. However, I never really started eating more tomatoes until I was an adult. Tomato soup, I actually never tried "again" until a few years ago and it tasted so yummy, I can't believe I was missing that all these years! I like my tomato soup made with milk, definitely. No water. I like it nice and creamy. Also, I like to make some rice and put some of that in as well. Then I can eat it as a nice lunch or a light dinner if I add a salad as well, or maybe a half of a sandwich. Really hits the spot!

I make it but don't eat it. Never cared for tomatoe soup of any kind. My husband enjoys it when I add half cream, half water, mushrooms, parmesean cheese, and a touch of tabasco. He says it has body and tastes great.

I can fully understand how things like that can happen! I like raw carrots as a salad, either alone or with some coleslaw, but one of the few things I dislike very much and always have, are cooked carrots! So if I can have them raw, carrots are perfect, but not those that are cooked, although I must admit that if they are kind of hidden, like in a minestrone, then I eat them!

Hi Ldyjarhead, I'm a lover of tomato soup as well. I mostly have my homemade tomato soup at home. I do keep stock of canned tomato and mushroom soup in the kitchen. In case I'm rather busy I still could enjoy taking my favorite tomato soup I love thick tomato soup and of course the required amount of milk usually is added to it, to make it creamy and more tasty. I would like to stir it with a little amount of water to make it into a big whole bowl...yummy indeed...

I don't like tomatoes on their own and have a sensitivity towards them. When I eat them I tend to get a bad headache a few hours later. But strangely enough, when made with milk, I am OK. There must be something in the tomotoes that gets neutralized when mixed with milk perhaps. I do like tomato soup, because it doesn't really taste like tomatoes! _Derek

Tomato soup is my favorite soup. I just add water, but add a little less than the full can it calls for. Comes out perfect for me. We have a "Pur" water filter system on our kitchen faucet because our water is really nasty. Maybe you have nasty water in your area and that is why adding water is not to your liking.

I was never a big fan of tomato soup. My mother always made this with grilled cheese sandwiches when I was growing up. She never used water to mix the soup. She always used milk. She said it made the soup taste creamier. i make tomato soup for my faamily. I usually just mix it with water for my children. My late husband had to have it mixed with milk instead.
