Fruit flies can come from the outside, or can travel on fruit or vegetables brought in from the garden or from the grocery stores. The eggs are very tiny so you may bring in a peice of fruit or whatever not even realizing you are actually bringin in food with fruit fly eggs in it. Fruit flies are attracted to and lay their eggs an fruit that is begining to rot, but they will also breed in pretty much any moist surface. They can also breed in your sinks pipes. They can lay up to 500 eggs. To avoid them be sure to eat up your fruit that is beginning to spoil, or be sure to keep it in the refrigerator, also keep an eye on your onions and potatoes as they like those too. If you have a potato or onion with a small bad spot cut it off the onion and put the onion in the fridge. Cut it off of the potato and cook the potato right away or discard it in an outdoor garbage can. Also pour bleach down your sink at night primarily the kitchen sink, but a little in each sink drain and toilet can't hurt.

The common Fruit fly or the Drosophila melanogaster , are equipped with sniffing antennae that could spot rotten fruit scent in miles ... rotten fruits means partial sugar metabolism which is a favorite food of fruit flies , partially digested sugar is easier to consume like flower nectar.. in fact, it could reach your food in as fast as 2-3 hours...

I have been trying to get rids of these pests for awhile now and couldn't seem to get rid of them. I have tried setting traps, washing out the trash cans and keeping my fruits and veggies put away but I can never get rid of them. Maybe they are hiding in my sink drains. I will pour bleach in them and see if it helps. I pour boiling water down the drains all the time. I am surprised that that did not kill them.
