What do your pets do when you're not there?

I used to crate my dog when I left the house to prevent him from tearing things up and using the bathroom all over the place, but now we have a doggie door and I've mostly broken him of his destructive habits, so I've been leaving him free when I leave. However, I start school again tomorrow and I'm a tad bit worried about leaving him alone while I'm at school. I know from what my family has told me that when I'm not around he mostly sleeps, but eight hours is a long time and I'm afraid he'll get bored. So tell me, what do y'all do with your pets when you leave and what do your pets do while your gone?

My chihuahua sleeps in her pet taxi cage when we're away. She stays in there a lot. But we always get her out and play with her after we take her outside.

That's the good thing with having a horse. When I'm not there, he's either inside sleeping (in the night) or outside with his horsey friends. Luckily, my horse isn't very expensive or misbehaves in any way, so he goes with several other horses. (a mare, two of her sons and one daughter). He doesn't play very much with the younger horses but every now and then we can see them running around, or rolling around in the mud or scratching eachothers backs.

I have 5 dogs lol,and untill the past few weeks never worried when I was out. But its holiday time and the kids visiting our village have fun at making the dogs bark,so my latest to stop the dogs getting upset is to put the radio on,not sure if they like what they hear, lol but have to say they have for sure slept as no cushions are disturbed, normally they would be knocked on the floor and the dogs do seem calm,,,just a thought..

well i just let him stay outside the house, i would be more comfortable when he is in the garden moving here and there, at least there is my pet guarding the house

When my dog was still a puppy I did crate her. Now she is over 2 and is fine staying in the house when no one is home. Sometimes I think I would love to put a camera in the house to see what she does, it could be interesting. I really think she just sleeps most of the day away.

My dogs have a doggie door, they can go in and out when they want to. If your dog is fairly young he will get bored so don't leave anything down where he can get it. He may chew things he's not supposed to. Leave plenty of water and the amount of food that you usaully put down for him. Keep toys for him. It will be fine he will get used to the dailey routine. Good Luck!

I have the same problem with my 2 dogs. I started to block them into the kitchen and dining area since it has a vinyl floor that can be washed. I dont have a doggy door - I want one but I would not let them have free run while we are gone since my dogs are barkers and that would surely piss off the neighbors.

Since you have broken him out of the destructive habits, then it will be fine to leave him alone in the house. I guess beside, sleeping, he will just wander alone the house. If you are still not convince, get him one of the rubber bones to chew when he is bored.

Hi Lauren, The secret to have a dog that behaves well when you're not around, is to get him tired before you leave. If you just leave him alone, with all his energy un-burned, he has to burn it somehow, and the result will be a destroyed house. But if you spend some time to exercise him in the morning, he will be tired enough to sleep all the time until you come back. I usually wake up two hours before I must leave home. I take Binne for a walk for 90 minutes or so, then I feed her. After all that she is so tired that she goes to sleep. It doesn't matter to her that I prepare myself for leaving, she won't even come to the door when I leave home. So she sleeps most of the time when I'm not at home, and when I come back she's fresh and ready to go.

My pet distruct all the things in our house, they play but some of our things in our house may destroy. So its better to look at them always and teach them to be a good pet. Teach them the basic skills

First off we don't have to worry about our dog destroying our house since we leave her outside. We have a puppy chihuahua and she is always very energetic. Every time we come home and go to the backyard she comes running and jumping around. When we are away we usually leave her with some toys to play with. While we are away she likes to play with our pet rabbit. She is always near her cage. Anyways sometimes when we come home we have difficulty finding her. She is very small and our yard is very big. So we figured that she keeps herself busy by just exploring our backyard. Sometimes we find her asleep when we come back. If you don't want your dog to get bored then you should buy another dog to keep him company. But if you really can't do what I suggested then just leave some snacks and toys with him.

My dog will weight by the door for an hour or two and then she will get sleepy and go to my bathroom, close the door and go to sleep. The only downside to her plan is she cannot get out of the bathroom, so she has to wait till i get home. It is really funny. As soon as she gets out she stretches and I take her for a walk.

I don't do anything with my pets when I'm not home. They're just cats so they'll probably just sleep the whole time, or fight with eachother. Usually they're not to destructive. They used to scratch the couches a lot though, we had to lock them in the basement.
