I was shocked an appalled when I had an online friend tell me that she put her dog down just to get an apartment.
Here I am worrying about finding the money to finish paying the deposit on a house, but I could never kill my pets if I were to become homeless.
I can't believe an animal lover would do such a thing. I would think that they would do everything they could to prevent something like that.
Why would you kill something that has been a part of your life for years? It's just wrong, not to mention, in a way, it's murder.

I could not be friend of such a person, to tell you the truth! I personally regard Lola as my animal friend. If I did not have the means to keep her with me, the only way I could part with her if to find her a new home. And, at least in my country, this is not an imposible task. You can go to a radio and tell them to say that I´m giving a dog. And now, with internet, it is even easier.
I mourned my last dog for over a year when I had to help her die when she was over 16 years old. She asked me to, at the end she would not even drink water from my hand. I cannot imagine someone so cruel as to put a healthy dog down.

I was talking to her last night, and the only reason why she did it was because of the breed, her dog didn't take too kindly to strangers and would bite them.
Unfortunately she couldn't give the dog away as a result of that.

There are ways even for that. Dogs know who loves them. I remember my Misty. She was a big german shepherd who rough played with my granchildren. But she did not touch babies although she got near to them. She knew that the baby´s mom would have fear.
Of course my Misty was a lot more intelligent than a lot of human beings I have met.
I´m sure your friend´s dog could have a place.

I'm a veterinary assistant and you would be surprised how some people regard their animals. Of course there are some people who think they don't have any options and don't know what else to do, but as a last resort we tell people to surrender the animal to a local shelter and at least give it a chance to have a new home. Most of the shelters near where I live are no-kill, a few are very low-kill, so there is a reasonably high chance that any pet will get adopted. And some places will even help people in bad situations by fostering their pets and giving them back once the owner has fixed their situation and can take the pet back. I am always so saddened when those types of cases come in and we do everything we can to find another way. Most people, as I mentioned, just don't think they have one so a little bit of help is always good if they can find it.
Me? I lost a job 2 years ago, a high-paying office job and had to move out of a very nice pet-friendly apartment where me and my two dogs had been living for close to 3 years. I ended up somewhere that I hate living, but it's at least safe here and my doggies are with me. I would have moved into a cardboard box before I gave them up.

This is horrible. I don't think I'd be friends with a person after finding out they did that. I know that sounds harsh, but it's true.

I heard lots of stories like that and its heartbreaking for me. There's one story I read in a blog owned by a volunteer in an animal shelter house that a dog was dumped in their shelter house because the owner will move to other state not country. The dog is old about 10 years old and they probably have the dog for almost 10 years. Poor dog, I have seen his picture seating in the corner of the shelter office. Those owner of him is so cruel to just dump him there. Why not find him a home and not just leave him in an animal shelter. There's a big chance that no one will adopt the dog because of his age. Poor dog he thinks he's part of the family.

That is great to hear from you. Many people consider pets as their own children. I have never had a pet for myself. My parents had some pets and I liked the pets and took care of them when I was a kid. I never had a pet and feel that having a pet is almsot like having a baby. The pet requires lots of attention and spending of money. You should have a pet only if you are ready to take care of it well.

God forbid if I would be placed in a situation like this I would not put my babies down. I'd find people who can take care of them and would love them like I do. I love my dogs and that would be the last option for me only if they get very sick and no hope for recovering. However circumstances such as this it is not hopeless just need to look around.

i agree with you ,i wont desert my pet , for pet is honest ,is faithful, so i think we must pass the suffering with it ,what they ask is not much ,sometimes even you havent food ,just give your hand to them ,they will lick your hands
whatever you are rich or in poverty ,they also can lie on the cold ground , sometimes protect you ,they are more faithful than those so called "your best friends" even when you passed away ,they will also keep alert around where you have slept to protect this place not be invaded
they are best friends ,i don't understand those people who desert their best friends ,if they can do this ,maybe next time he/she will desert his/her friends to achieve their aims
