I say this about the egg recall! Not to mention how chickens on large chicken farms are keep in cages and can't be a normal chickens! Free range chickens can be normal chickens! They are happier! They aren't confined in a cage! They produce better eggs! I know it could impossible to raise all chickens like this but if more would be raised as free range it would be a better for people and the chickens!

This is greed that causes the large farms and treatment of the chickens. But realize it isn't just chickens it is all meat, everything we eat is the result of large farms! I seen on tv where a city outlawed raising your own chickens because of the health dangers to people. Gone are the days of grandpa and grandma, think I need to add great to that, had the self supporting farm. The cow to milk for the dairy products, the chickens for the eggs, the pig for the bacon. Even in the country we don't live like that anymore. WE had a neighbor that had 1 acre in the country and they had chickens, but the county wouldn't let them have a horse and cow! Not enough room for them they said!!!!!! We have been overtaken by the laws of our country to where we cannot even provide for our selfs.

But why should the Amish be allowed to do it and we are not???? A way of life? Isn't it our way of life too? My parents had all the farm animals, cows, pigs, chickens. By the time I was born they were down to the chickens and farming the land with crops. We still do, the farm land is leased out to a farmer. He has his own animals but uses our farm to grow crops. He also has other farms that he grows the crops on. But we tried to do our own farming, in less then one year we knew we couldn't do it and survive so my husband went to driving truck and we leased the land.

The Amish was an example. Nothing more! Alot of Amish who are farmers don't work away from the farms and make a profit farming. I am not saying they are perfect and not all Amish are farmers! There isn't enough land were alot of the Amish to live to do so! So they make and sell quilts, make Amish buggies, are carpenters and work at buiding mobile homes. Some the things I know the Amish do besides farming.

Just go vegan. It's best for the chickens, the eggs and you!

Good piont! Being vegan would help but it is very hard to be a vegan! You just don't give up,all meat, seafood, eggs but also you give up anything with animal bypruducts in it! Like somethings have lard in it and jello, for example, uses grounded up bone maro in the making of it! That also means a vegan can't eat anything with butter! No candy, candy bars,no ice cream,no cheese unless it is made out of tofu! As you can see it can be done but very hard to do!

I'm a vegan! And don't find it all that hard to do... Of course I didn't do it all at one time, but in steps... There are also a lot of healthy substitutes for butter, cream, cow milk, ice cream, etc. And as for cow milk, well do you realize that humans are the only species to not only drink the milk of another species but to carry on drinking it past weaning age? MOST dark chocolate is made without milk products. I simply check the labels... I love being vegan. It's the healthies thing I ever did for myself!

Not to mention the terrible factory farming practices chickens are subjected to...in some of the worse facilities, they are taken as chicks and have half of the upper portion of their beaks seared off so they can't peck each other. Most aren't able to stand properly when kept in small cages and their muscles atrophy. There are many more awful and inhumane things that occur in large groups of cage egg-laying chickens, and among other animals bred for food. The whole reason we ended up with mad cow disease in the last decade was because herbivorous livestock were being fed ground up bones and brain matter of other livestock! And we wonder why these things happen... Anyway, I am in agreement with you, ideally, all chickens should be free-range, and treated and fed properly.

I remember the Mad Cow disease scare! I could not believe they used ground up animals to feed livestock like cattle! The things you learn! I have heard about the chicken used for feed can't stand properly in their cages because the cages are so small! I'm not surprise the upper portion of their beaks being seared off so they can't peck other chickens. It appalling! I hope more chickens are raised free range style after this latest scare!

Love the article you started! I remember well when I used to visit my grandpas farm and his chickens roamed everywhere and they all knew when to go in the chicken coop at night. you are right you seldom see chickens roaming around free as they were meant to be. I remember a Banny rooster though he thought he was as big as anything and if you just passed him he would chase you and try to spur you (oh the good ole days LOL) My other grandpa had ducks. I remember being 5 years old and wanting to feed the ducks and they were loose on the farm too. So I took a bucket of corn grandpa gave me and he expected I would throw the corn to them and instead I was trying to feed them one kernal at a time, needless to say the ducks wanted their food and were nipping at my ankles behind me. And I remember not wanting to let go of the bucket of corn because I wanted to feed them! I think you are right animals should have rights too. Even though we use eggs they should have a natural setting for them just as we think we have a natural setting in our homes.

I remember when I was growing up my mom had chickens. They roamed around all day and had a coop to stay in at night. I had a uncle who raised chickens the same way! He had a rooster who you had to watch out for! He was very protected of his hens! Those were the days and I hope we see more of this in the future!
