This is a real disaster. Today my colleagues are talking about this issue. We think the rescue is totally a failure. We don't understand what's wrong with the rescue team. At the beginning the hijack person still had a peaceful attitude, and actually his requirement was not that much. What's wrong with the negotiation? This person was not asking for millions of dollars. He just wanted to be back to work. And at the end the situation was out of control. The negotiation and the rescue are fatal failing.

Hi Skysuccess, Now I start to wonder there is a bigger scandal in this case. Because this hijacker was a good policeman but had an unfair judgment and then was fired. He hijacked this tourism bus to create a bigger attention globally. Perhaps he knew some truth and therefore this one must die. Otherwise he would reveal many scandals. But they couldn't kill him directly because he seemed to be peaceful and nice to the passengers at first. So they had annoyed him continuously, like rejected his demands in paper officially and caught his brother. This is why finally the situation was out of control. And this man was in rage and killed the innocent people, and meanwhile he was killed.

1xiaoweiwei, This incident only prove a point that a country will always need to be prepared at all times to have a well trained special elite tactical team to handle special situations such as this hijacking of a tourist coach bus. It is obvious from the start that the authorities had been complacent and negligent with their duties. For a start this whole incident already spell disaster from the start where authorities were not decisive enough to control the situation. There were many chances to neutralize the hijacker and it was not taken. Snipers could have easily taken the hijacker down during negotiation stage and tactical teams could have stormed during delivery of rations than to wait until negotiation deadline. Then, when the inevitable use of force had to take place - we see a team of "clowns" with sledgehammers trying to breach a new and well fortified coach bus. There was simply no sense of urgency in the teams and leave people wondering what the tactical teams were doing during the day when negotiations was taking place. Looking at the video feed below, I do not see that there's any advance and good planning from the tactical execution. The tactical teams do not know how to break the windshields, breach the main door and emergency door exit. The plan should include a swift breach (with the intimate knowledge of the obstacles doors and tampered glass windows and windscreens) from all directions so that there will be an element of surprise and not be enough time for any reaction time from the hijacker. Also, the teams were only armed with automatic pistols and M16 rifles. The pistols are acceptable but M16 rifles in close quarter situations just spell disaster. The rifle's length will pose a hazard for the members to breach and storm effectively. Besides being cumbersome, the rifle's firepower will be too strong and may inflict collateral damage and casualties. I am just surprised that the tactical team officer in charge had not thought of this. A better choice would have been a 9mm Heckler & Koch UMP or MP5 K which will be powerful enough to inflict maximum damage on the intended target without penetration and injuring or killing innocent victims. It is sad that there were unnecessary lives being lost here and I cannot help feeling disappointed with the Philippines local authorities and the officer in charge at the scene for this fatal incident. The whole incident is just pathetic and speaks volumes on how ill-prepared their special teams are. I just cannot imagine if the Mumbai terror had taken place in Manila - I think the devastation could be many folds with such a poor domestic defense mechanism. 1xiaoweiwei, All I can say is that the authorities had been indecisive, careless and confused - and I am not surprised as they had been known to be from other incidents. Then, the police should have never been authorized to oversee and take charge of the negotiations and rescue operations. For one there's a conflict of interest, especially when this is a prolific police captain who is known by the whole police force. This would spell trouble especially when there may be sentiment supporters around the teams. I am sure this is a clearer perspective as to why the opportunities to settle the siege had gone wasted. There was even opportunity for the negotiators to take down the hijacker and disarm him without harming the hostages. So, the police was a wrong and fateful choice for this situation. Have a nice day.

yunzhbh, The authorities are at fault alright but Philippines do have anti terrorist teams who are familiar with hostage rescue in hijackings. Sadly, the police must be idiotically convincing to the authorities that they could do the job when it was obvious from the start they COULDN'T! There was really no point in negotiating with the hijacker at all, he should be neutralized or disarmed at the first available opportunity. The people on the scene just assumed that this was Hollywood and that it would end peacefully. Well, too bad - as with all assumptions it just mad an A$$ out of everyone there and the price - INNOCENT LIVES!

P.S. Here's something about the whole operation failure which was being observed and commented. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-11069616 And the recent insensitive developments of some local Filipinos that riled up the Chinese who are still overcoming the recent shock and grief. http://www.asiaone.com/static/multimedia/gallery/100823_hijack/
