Do you have a phobia? That is a constant and irrational fear of an object,

activity or situation. A fear that leads one to avoid it (at all costs?). For example, speaking in front of a congregation of people, a fear of dark or heights, a fear of bugs .. the list goes on. So do you have a fear that makes your heart beat a little faster, causes your hair to stand, or makes you rooted to the ground. Pray tell.

hi akopoaysi, I understand that feeling perfectly. There is a particular lift elevator that I feel this way especially it is very cram each time I take it. The thought of being trapped in it gives me the shivers.

carpediem yes indeed I cannot go up in high building as i am really' afraid of heights I will go out of my way to avoid heights if at all possible. And I will go up to the second floor of a mall but will not walk next to the railing at all. I hate that feeling but its there and I really cannot do much about it.

hi Hatley, understand the height phobia but sometimes the most wonderful views can be seen only at the lookout stations of higher buildings. Just curious, are you afraid of taking aeroplanes also?

I actually have a lot of phobias one of them would be that I am scared of bugs like it's really bad when one buzzes right by me I just scream because I can't take that irritating buzzing name so icky and ewww it makes my skin crawl. That's just one phobia though somebody who isn't scared of bugs is a brave and I mean brave person like my dad he is not scared of bugs at all he will kill them with his bare hands hard to believe I know, but he does it. Although he doesn't kill those big spiders with his hands because you know there those spiders that if they bite you, you have to get rushed to the hospital in less than thirty minutes or you would die, scary I know. Another of my phobias would have to be of heights every time I am somewhere up high and when I look down I get dizzy and scared I feel like I am going to fall and it feels like the ground under me feels like it's shaking and I have to grab on to something because I really do feel like I am going to fall, so yeah it's really bad I am amazed though that I get on roller coasters or maybe that's because I am forced into riding on them I guess it's the peer pressure and that's why I get on. I pretty much have no choice. I surrender to peer pressure because it's to much for me to take. Lastly my greatest phobia right now that has been scaring me everyday would be the fear of driving because I have a feeling that I will get into a car crash and that I will die right then and there. So every time my dad takes me to drive so that I could practice I get like tunnel vision where I only look ahead and I don't look around and scan, which is really bad because I have to be able to look around with no fear and i have to drive safely too.Yeah those are all my phobias and hopefully one day I hope to overcome them all, but that might take a long time.

I think the phobia of driving and crashing is very real and life-threatening. Better to be safe than sorry as it impact other lives too! Try to overcome your phobia slowly - little by little. You will realise that it is all in the mind, after all.

Yep, Spiders and most all insects "BUG" me. Snakes that aren't pets I'd rather not be near.. Worms are pretty yucky too. I don't have other phobias per se.. but I always have these nightmares that involve the brakes on my car failing.. or I think I will eventually get in to a major car wreck because of a sneeze.. But It doesn't stop me frm driving..just makes me more cautious. I really hate going into my basement if I know their are spiders there or maybe a rat.. _ i used to have pet hamsters.. but it's the tails I could do without! Eww!

hi minx creepies crawlies are not my favourites too especially lizards, geckos or chameleons. I would only like to view them on Discovery Channel. haha. Oh dear to have these nightmares involving car accidents and the like only leave us with cold sweat. I also have a sense of fear when driving too fast or too recklessly. I think it is a good fear coz it forewarns us of the risks in these areas. Thanks for sharing.

My phobia is on heights. Every time that I am in a high grounds and I can see the bottom I feel the fear that I will fall from where I stand. I lost my balance for a while so I avoid looking down when I am in a high place. I don't know when this fear started but as far as I can remember, since I was a kid, this fear keeps on creeping on me. I tried to overcome this fear by taking a rappelling class as my CWTS (Community Welfare and Training Service). This is a required course in college. Somehow I was able to conquer the fear but still, I can't remove it totally. At least, I can handle the situation when I am on high places.

hi Jaspertore, I understand that fear perfectly especially when you are at some new houses undergoing renovation and the balcony's railing is quite transparent to the view outside. This somehow intensifies the height of the building. Glad that you went through a course to counteract this fear. Certainly will need to get used to this especially one lives in the city.

I am scared of snakes and giving a speech in front of people. I don't know how to face either of them. I have been trying to practice speaking to myself in front of the mirror so that i can get a grip on myself and speak well within a crowd. It has been somewhat difficult for me to do so. I had just given a paper presentation once in my life and still now i am scared to give another one. Cheers!

hi Raviteja - yup snakes in general are really scary. I will be the last person to know how to deal with them! Giving a speech in front of people does not come easily to a lot of people. It needs practice and training. For myself, there were occasions that I was thrust into the limelight but I have to go with the flow much as it goes against the grain of my nature. After it was all over, it does not seem so bad after all and may amount to something like an achievement to oneself. All the best in your quest ....

Heights has been my no. 1 enemy so far. Maybe it's because I lived in a house with just storeys when I was young, I was used to being grounded. When I had to take escalators which are long and reach at least two levels, I would start to feel shaky, then I would try to stand somewhere in the middle and avoid looking over the edge. I know this is an irrational fear and I have tried hard to overcome it. I would train myself to look down once in a while hoping I would get used to it. Probably it could be done one day with enough training.

hi bmp, sorry to hear that you have a fear of heights coz really need to get used to it if one stays in or near the city area. I hope this has no bearings on the downcast look you spot somedays.

I have two--spiders, and roller coasters. I am terrified of spiders, especially ones inside the house! If I see a spider on the ceiling in my bedroom, I will sleep in another room unless my husband can kill it. I try to teach my kids to respect all living things, but I draw the line at spiders inside the house--then it is survival of the fittest! I am also afraid of roller coasters. I am not afraid of heights, and can easily ride simulated roller coaster, but actual roller coasters really scare me. I think I saw one too many movies as a kid where the rickety wooden roller coaster collapses. This summer at Disneyworld, my kids begged me to ride the Big 3--Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Railroad, and Space Mountain. I did all three just to be a good sport (and so they could go on them, too, because of the height requirement). I was ok with the first two, but my first ride EVER on Space Mountain did me in. Now I can say I've done it, but I will never go on another roller coaster again. Luckily, my kids will soon be old enough to go without me, and I can stay at the bottom and take pictures.

hi suzieqmom, spiders to me i think are relatively more acceptable than say lizards - but to each their own fears. I probably will just use a big hardcover book or newspaper to whack it off the face of this earth. Hmm, roller coasters are quite another thing. Besides fearing the ride itself, one worries if it is secured enough to withstand the gravity defying spins. I recently took a ride at Universal Studio called The Mummy. The ride was not the big humongous type but the build up of atmosphere was quite good and one feels the heat of the fire too ... almost in hell! It definitely plays on one's fears.

My phobia is heights. If I am in an enclosed space at a height ie a cable car I am fine but if I am near the edge of a cliff or hill I cannot get very close to the edge. My legs always feel weak but I do feel that some of it is 'mind over matter'. If I do not look down over the edge it is not generally as bad but I could not stand there for long.

hi Penguin, I confirm that you do not have claustrophobia (fear of enclsoures). Yup, seems like there are quite a number of persons having a similar fear. I wonder if it has to do with a sense of balance or the liquid that is in our ear oracles.
