Hi deve_annrn. One very important thing you should be aware of regarding oDesk is that it doesn't guarantee payment for fixed-fee jobs because it doesn't require an escrow payment for these jobs. You therefore might want to look into vWorker instead. vWorker guarantees payment for both fixed-fee jobs and hourly jobs.

It's true that sometimes fixed jobs in oDesk don't guarantee payment, it's stated in their system. So, I suggest, you pick hourly jobs instead, like what I did, because it guarantees payment. :)

I was in Odesk for a month now. I have applied for 2 jobs and awaiting for an interview. I have not undertaken the readiness test yet because I have to read a lengthy rules, guidelines, etc. As far as I know and my understanding about the site is that Odesk is like your agent company, where you can find jobs there and apply. Employers search for workers at odesk. If you pass the interview or if the employer hires you, you earn depending on the rate the employer offered or based on the negotiated rate which is either per hour or per week. Basically, the rates are fair and you can really earn. However, the nature of the work at odesk is high compared to Mylot. What we earn in Mylot is categorized as a reward for participating and not as a salary or wage for a work done.

So you have tried applying for jobs already even without taking the readiness test.., yes.., reading the lengthy terms and conditions is really a bore and it made my eyes really sore.., I took the exam last night.., I failed at the first attempt.., Maybe I was to sleepy to work harder the I retook the test when I woke up and luckily I've passed...=)

I think that the procedure of being part of oDesk is yeah, somehow complicated because you have to put up your resume, package yourself, take tests to add to your credentials, but after going through the rudiments, it really pays off in the end. I have been part of oDesk since Jan 2009 and it was only last month that I truly dedicated some time in applying and following through with my applications. Fortunately, my efforts were not in vain because I have had more than 5 contracts since the last week of July, and I have 2 ongoing contracts now, one in San Francisco and the other in Encinitas, both in California, USA, one is fixed price for 3 weeks and the other is ongoing, indefinite and full-time. I still have 1 interview currently being processed and several more pending applications.
Yes, definitely you can earn better on oDesk than on myLot, but it is really not comparable because what we do here is just posting on discussions, learning from each other, and earning cents is just a bonus.
Some tips though: 1) initially, try to rate yourself low first so that you can establish your profile on the site, gain positive feedbacks from employers, and as you go along, you can slowly up your rate to what you would really want to receive; 2) try to avoid employers who do not have a verified payment method or do not have any payments released to their employees yet -- there is a possibility of getting scammed since they do not have established records on odesk yet; 3) of course, package your resume well, make it attractive to potential employers to make them want to hire you; 4) be courteous and friendly during the interview and always put your best foot forward. 5) be honest if you are not really capable of doing the job since it might cause you to have negative feedback if you cannot deliver the required output.
So far, these are the things I can think of for now. Hope these helps. Good luck!

I have tried odesk before but I stopped looking for a job there. Its too complicated and there are a lot of things that you need to do like take a tests and other stuff like that. There are no jobs for mediocre. Anyway, I just tried to look for something else in the internet.

I've been tried to be at odesk some are interviewed me but because i was busy at work not online i never comply with them. As I know they will pay and really they hired online workers. But there is lot of pressure. You are working a provider and you have duty and responsibility to do your task on time. Like for example as an appointment setters you job is to be a secretary of the person who render your service. And they pay you as per hour. Yes some quite good big earn then any sites depends on the job u got. Odesk is okay. Try it then you will know. Have a nice day!

If it pays well really depends on the task you are working with, obviously some work pay better than other jobs - But you have to decide what is worth your time and what is not! ;)
I have gotten several contracts through oDesk and now I have repeating work sometimes and how much it pays depends on the individual tasks from time to time. It can be recommended to work for a low fee to get some feedback and then slowly increase the fee you charge for the same type of work to the normal fees. So in other words underbidding in hope of a change to get a small order - then get the feedback which most contractors want.

Odesk really pays well. But it is very hard to get a job there. You should be a professional and must have in depth knowledge in your field. If you have any previous experiance working in any other company it will be great boost for while applying for the job. Because the providers like to give jobs to those who have some experiance earlier.

Hi! It's seem complicated but you'll get a hang of it. I found my work there and they pay good. Just make a resume and apply on as may jobs as their limit. I think you also have to take their Odesk exam. Good luck.

from what i hear, Odesk is a complicated job. I hate confusing jobs especially online. not much direction or hands on experience you can learn from.
i might look into it. i hear it pays well. but its also hard to get a job.
anyway
happy mylotting!!

hi yes I have been with Odesk for about 12 months now and have taken a lot of there test so as I can get a better chance of getting work, have applied for over 30/40 jobs and have never had one single job from them.
On saying that a friend of mine who is a proofreader by profession has had more work than he can handle, he live in the USA so I am not sure if that make any difference or not.
I can only tell you my experience with them it is a lot of hard work and they do want you to take there test nearly every day.
You might want to keep at it for a while to see if you are lucky or not.
