Wrongful termination

Last week, I came into work only to be informed over the phone by my boss that one of my coworkers was no longer with the company. When the entire work force consists of fewer than a dozen people, this comes as a shock; there had been no warning, no goodbye, and we're all very friendly with each other at work, so if someone was leaving, we would have known. The whole thing was made very hush-hush and we were forbidden to talk among ourselves about it at work, or risk termination. Several days later, I had the opportunity to speak with my ex-coworker and learned a bit about what actually happened. The reason: a number of very trivial things that should not have been grounds for letting go an employee with a great amount of knowledge that was put to use daily, and whom customers were grateful to have as a source to turn to. What it came down to was finding an excuse to cut a salary and save a bit of money. Has anything like this ever happened where you work? I plan on leaving sometime next year before summer, though have not yet made this known. Now I think I will feel much less regret about leaving; I love the people I work with, including my managers, but the way the business is being run by the owners is ridiculous.

I have had something quite similar happen to me. It was said the position was full time. I was prepared to continue working a way. The company even sent me to get more training. Very shortly after, and after a bit of curfuffle with the City, I was suddenly given notice. It was just before Christmas. Sure things were getting a bit slow but would of picked up. As the material we specialized in was a January thing. Anyway, I was extremely upset. I really loved my job. I know it was because of the over run, the reason was to save money. One had to go and it was me. The job was unfortunately male dominated but was because the majority of the work was heavy heavy. Stuff I couldn't do that needed doing. I could do a lot of it but a couple things I struggled with simply because I didn't have the strength, so if one had to go I can see why it was me. I was the only girl working there. The department I was in did not entail heavy work. Well, it was all heavy but not as heavy as some necessary tasks that took place in the field but I still should of been able to do it, all, in event I was called out but I simply couldn't. That wasn't why I was let go though. It was always said to let the guys do it but the truth is, there were money issues and if one had to go it was going to me. The boss said that management drew straws. Mine was drawn and I had to go. I am still a bit tiffed about that and was quite a few years ago now. Would I go back? I'd love to but likely not. Maybe foe a different company in the ame industry but not at all interested to work for the same guy, no.
