I realized this week that I do not see as many butterflies as I used to.

I do not know if there are really fewer of them, or if I just do not notice, or if I am never outside. Do you see very many butterflies? I had the caterpillars of a black or blue swallowtail on my parsley, but they ate it all and left. I had looked the caterpillar up in a book. I think next year I shall plant more flowers that bloom all summer, maybe I will see butterflies again. Maybe they have all been at your house this summer. Maybe next year I can post butterfly pictures on Mylot.

Yes, the more flowers you have the more butterflys will come and visit. I had a few, mostly in the front yard since now my puppies are in the back, anything that moves is theirs...lol I don't even want to think about the things they droop at the back door before entering...I thought only cats brought gifts..

Cats bring gifts because they want to take care of you, dogs bring gifts because they want to play. Either way, you get the gift.

I wonder whether the butterflies found in your country are of the same species that we have here. We have thousand and one different kinds of butterflies that can be found in my country and they never disappear from sight. We even have a butterfly garden here that is unique and has become a tourist attraction. They come out at night and their bodies are lighted. These glowing butterflies create a natural lighting in the dark just like the christmas tree with the neon lights.

I had not heard of a butterfly that glows. We have "lightening bugs" starting in late May or early June and they are out all summer. We still have plenty of them.

Hi zandi, do you mean, fireflies?
I love fireflies especially when they fill up an entire tree. They look like pixies and fairies. :)

Someone at SideTick had an album full, but I do not think he took the pictures. I am going for a walk this morning, maybe I will get some good pics of something.

I have tons of butterflies in this yard. try phlox. I have the huge yellow tiger and black swallow tails that swarm around the phlox. Mama had a snow ball bush too that is now gone but the butterflies were everywhere.
Do you take the magazine Birds and Blooms? It's got great pics and suggestions on how to draw them in and also you might to get a butterfly house.
I don't know if just too late in the summer for you to see them but just a while ago I watched six on this phlox by the front door.

Thanks for the suggestions. I know where I could get a butterfly house for next year. I am planning on more flowers for sure.

I always plan on more flowers! but since moving into my mama's house, she had everything from A to Z and the heat has been so bad here it's a wonder anything has survived.
But I love the humming birds and the butterflies and they seem to thrive here !
Still the yard is too big and I need to figure out how to cut it down.
I am not in any shape to mow myself anymore. I really can't afford to pay someone either but I did find an article on how to get rid of your yard and add more flowers !
So, next year I intend to try to kill this grass,,,,,,,, and add beds of flowers.
We will see how that works !
Hang in there. You should have oodles of butterflies next year..
Oh and yes, !! always leave some water standing on the ground so the butterflies can "puddle" as they call it. They get nutrients, minerals from a puddle of water and they hang around a puddle.
Good luck !
hugs, quita

We have plenty of butterflies her, I have loads of plants and bushes that both the butterflies and honey bees love - we mainly get cabbage whites and red admirals.
We also get loads of them along the canal at the back of my home.
In fact I have just gone out in the garden to look and took a photograph of a visitng Red Admiral for you!!

I haven't really seen many caterpillars at all, but I have noticed quite a few butterflies. Mostly what I have been seeing are Monarchs, and those tiny fritillaries. (Fritillaries look like miniature monarchs with their wing coloring.) I think I see a lot of them because of the clover in the hayfield that's by the house. They really seem to like the clover blossoms, and the thistle heads over by the one fence line too. I see them more there around the field edges than I do around my flower beds. Haven't seen one swallowtail this year at all. I did get to see a huge, and I do mean huge, walking stick that attached itself to my screen door. Personally, I'd rather see all the butterflies lol.

I think swallowtails like wild carrot, regular carrots, and dill mostly. Things in that family. Monarchs should start moving through on their way to Mexico, soon.

Maybe the butterflies flew somewhere cooler. Granted, they aren't fans of cold weather, but surely even butterflies get tired of the 100 plus degree heat. Now that I think about, I have seen a few butterflies lately, but not too many. However, I'm not outside a whole lot.

I've seen a few almost daily from the small dainty white butterflies to Monarchs. But you know if you look for some info on Monarchs their numbers have been down over the years and there are a few places trying to get people to plant host plants for them.... in wich I gladly oblige! Everyone in my family enjoys the sight of them fluttering in our yard.

I live in a rural area. I still see a lot of butterflies in my area. They are more abundant in the spring and summer months though. Some of the butterlies that I have seen are quite beautiful. It would be sad to not see them exist.

Last month I saw lots of butterflies everydays, as there are lots where I live. I still see them, but not as much as the previous weeks.
I dislike butterflies very much, so I`m not very happy about that.

I agree with you. I was just thinking about this the other day. But it was more about hummingbirds. I used to live in Bakersfield, CA and now I live in Utah, where it's hot and dry. I used to love seeing them always fly by my window, but here it's almost like they never existed. I've even got hummingbird feeders all around my house and have had them there for several months and the only reason I have to change it is because the fluid has gone dry or crystallized. It makes me sad..

I do not see them here at all, but they should be here. I want to plant Lantana, as that is what the hummers liked at my grandmother's house.

In an urban place.., it's rare to find a pretty butterfly flying around in the garden with the polluted air, they would prefer to stay in rural gardens.. I went home a few weeks ago and we visited our little farm up on the hill and there I saw what I haven't seen in the longest time.. A lot of cute butterflies were flying around and I was running after them just to get a picture.., but I failed.. It was fun..=)

There is a Butterfly Bush that you can plant that attracks butterflies. My mom had one, the flowers are pretty. I have seen a few butterflies this year, I even think I have seen more this year then last. I do think the population of butterflies overall is down. I remember as a kid you would see lots and lots of them. I look forward to your pictures next year. Your just going to have to have flowers to attrack them so you can get some good pics to share.

hi garden gerty no I have not seen many butterflies this year, a year and a half ago I saw the oddest sight, a veritable swarm of monarch butterflies and they flew past the library south. I was telling the head librarian about it and she told me they swarm to Mexico in t he summer each year. they were beautiful too. we used to see small blue butterflies and that meant cabbage worms were going to eat our cabbage but I took a can of kerosene and p;icked up the worms and dropped them in the oil. we did save almost all our cabbages that years. Here in California we u sed to see so many different kinds swallowtails monarch, small blue ones and yellow ones. I used to know the names of them all but have forgotten that now.

I worked with a lady who went out on an agriculture thing and counted Monarchs when they migrated. I have seen pictures of entire trees covered by them. They are longer lived than most butterflies. I definitely will plant more things they like next year.

I have also been missing the butterflies. When I was still in grade school, there were lots of butterflies in our school playground. They were mostly yellow and white butterflies and they fly around the yellow and orange cosmos flowers planted around our school playground. I miss those days and the butterflies too. What I mostly see these days are dragonflies and grasshoppers but very seldom do I see butterflies. Where have they gone?

I have seen a lot of butterflies this summer. However, a friend of mine who has a beautiful garden said that she has seen a lot less this year than in previous years. Maybe it is because it has been so hot this summer. I live on top of a mountain, so maybe there are more around here because it isn't so hot up here. My friend lives down in the valley, and it is about 7-10 degrees hotter down there.

I have not given that much thought perhaps because you are right. I cannot even remember the last time I did see one by the way.
Maybe because I have been indoors more but come to think I just can't remember.
