August 23, 2010, an armed former policeman hijacks a bus of tourists [which were mostly chinese] to get reinstated in the force and also to prove that he is innocent from his cases. It was a 11-hour long crime, the people blamed the Public security for their incompetence in the situation, also people blamed the Media for giving a live report of everything where inside the bus the hostage taker can see all activities happening in the perimeter. The hostage-taker got agitated when his family was in custody of the police, forced to answer questions. [he was also able to see this in the bus]
By 10pm or so, the police THEN started to act, because they failed in negotiating with the hostage taker, they THEN attacked, first firing through the windows, but the hostage taker used his hostages as "Human Shields" and so the police then threw tear gas inside the bus, after a rain of bullets, it was confirmed that hostage taker was shot by the sniper... still after it all ended in blood bath, 9 tourists dead and the hostage taker.
President noynoy gave his deepest condolences to the families of the victims soon after the crime, there were 4 confirmed survivors. HK and China were frustrated about the crime and blamed the public security as well, therefore putting a black mark on the Philippines in travel agencies.
The hostage taker succeeded in proving one thing though, that the Public Security was incompetent of ever doing their jobs.

Correction on the info posted by the person who started the topic: There were 8 hostages killed and there were originally 25 tourists in the bus so that gives it about 17 survivors. I guess the one major flaw in that situation was when the police arrested the hostage-taker's brother. That was the key factor that agitated the situation and that resulted to more incompetencies. Another failure from the ground commander was he didn't research about the bus' composition. I just found out from an automotive expert that there are 2 other ways to enter the bus, one was through the emergency exit which can also be opened from the outside, and another at the back where the transmision box is located which leads to a trap door inside the bus.

Thank you for clarifying. :)
True, his brother was one of the reasons he started killing. Though what I don't understand is that the brother was taken in video even in the early ours of the crime running to and from the bus... hmm, well, now that you mention it, they SHOULD HAVE thought of a better way to get in the bus.

That's the whole picture of our Philippine National Police. there's a lot of issues arising from this institution and now this, a very tragic event, which could be ended with no one gets hurt if only they have a good plan and strategy in hostage rescue. I give my deepest Condolence to the victims of the hostage taking.
