My husband will have his birthday next week, I am thinking to buy a cake for him to celebrate his birthday, however when I discussed with him about the cake, he doesn't want to buy any cake, however I really want to buy cake for him. Mylotters, do you think is it necessary to buy cake to celebrate birthday? I think it is necessary to buy cake, it will lose the meaningful if without a cake, do you agree with my opinion? Give me some suggestions, thank you for sharing.

It is my tradition is a birthday is to be celebrated then a cake is necessary not a requirement just part of the celebration. But in your husbands case he does not want a cake. Be creative and buy or bake a pie, or chopped fruits or something that could hold up the candles. Good Luck with this.

I don't know how to bake a pie or chopped fruits, I think if I won't buy a cake for him, I don't need to do something to hold up the candles. Maybe my husband consider it's not substantial necessary for birthday, maybe he want me to send him special gifts.LoL, I guess he worried that I won't buy anything for him after I bought the cake.I am considering buy others for him also.

It sounds great, good idea. I will try to buy one small cake, then he will make his wishes also. I will plan to buy a purse as a gift for him, do you think is it a good gift? Give me some suggestions? Happy day@

Since you are going to get him a gift get a small inexpensive birthday cake as well. This way he gets it all.

Hello bettydeng5, it is not necessary to buy cake during birthdays if you don't have the means. But in your case, since it's your husband's birthday whether he told you it's not necessary but then if you really would want to surprise him of this, then go ahead. What matters is it came from the heart and your willing to make your partner happy. I believe he can understand and appreciate it on his end.=)

Thank you for give my good suggestions. He doesn't care it is necessary to have a cake for birthday, I guess he will be happy if I send the gift to him instead. I am thinking what gift is proper for man, eg. neckcloth, clothes, watch, purse or other gifts. Do you have some idea of the gifts? Thank you for sharing.

You're welcome bettydeng5!=) I suggest that you gave him the gift his into(like if he loves watches, neckloth, purses, then choose from among those the thing that he likes best and have it personalized:-)).But of course, one of the sweetest gift that you could give him is to arrange for a romantic place(not that expensive but a place where you can enjoy both your privacy), and have it as a surprise to him. :-) Being together on your husband's birthday is the paramount of all! Gudluck and More power!:-)

Not really. I don't like cake, and I have a cousin with Lupus who can't have cake, so fruit tart cake is good (it's kind of like a tart, you put some cream on top, strawberries or any kind of fruit you like, and then a crust bottom). You don't really have to do a cake. Cake is also loaded with calories.

It's good to have strawberries or any kind of fruit instead of cake.In fact, let the people feel the speical sweetness at him or her birthday. The mood is very important.

Hi betty! It is not at all necessary to buy a cake. You see your hubby's birthday could be celebrated even without cutting a cake. You can go for a quite dinner or could go for a movie, that would also be fine. If he does not appreciate the idea of cutting a cake, you should not buy it. All the best to you.

hi bettydeng, definitely not a requirement for a birthday celebration. For crying out loud, some people just don't like to eat cake in the first place. By doing something together to commemorate the event like watching a movie, going to the theatre for a play or musical, going for a concert would be good enough I think.

It's so romantic to watch a movie, going to the theatre. Yesterday it's was my husband's birthday, we weren't so romantic. we went outside to buy some food, and we cooked them by ourselves. I bought a gift to him. Though we didn't get a romantic birthday, but it looked good. Happy day!

I think that the suggestion to buy a small cake is a good one. My hubby had his birthday tonight and I baked him a devils food cake. My son and I are not really supposed to have chocolate so we got a small key lime cake made by Pepperidge Farms and it was really quite yummy. If it is just the two of you then maybe he just does not like the idea of having a big cake when its just you. You could even give him cupcakes and put a candle in it for the birthday.

yeah, actually I bought a small cake instead of big one. It was also ok to celebrate with candle. wow, it's so nice to bake food cake, is it difficult to bake by yourself? I didn't bake any, because I didn't have bake machine. I guess it was delicious.

Well, to have or not to have a cake is actually the prerogative of the one who celebrates his birthday. If you husband does not want a cake on his birthday then follow his desire. It is his birthday and not yours after all. You should make him happy his special day. I'm afraid that if he sees that you buy the cake despite his refusal, he might be offended and will not be pleased because you disregarded his opinion. It is his birthday so follow his decision. Don't buy a cake. Now when your birthday comes, then buy yourself a cake. Okay Now before I forget, I wish your husband an advance Happy, Happy Birthday! And by the way I disagree with your opinion that the meaning of a birthday will be lost without a cake. My dear, not all people can afford to buy a cake but they celebrate their birthday joyfully just the same. The meaning of birthday is in the heart not on the cake. Even without a cake, if you celebrate your birthday with joy and thanksgiving then that will always be a blessing. You can always forget about the cake but never, never forget to thank the Lord who gave you the blessing of another year.

Thank you so much salonga. Thank you for your best wishes to my husband. Your words let me so touched. You are very right, I can't affect the mood of my husband, I should obey his decision. His happiness is my happiness. I never forget to thank the Lord who give me the blessing of another year. I really like to communicate with mylotters here, so many friends here to help me, share the opinion, give suggestions, and I learned so much from mylotter friends. Also I am so happy to have so many friends in mylot. Happy mylotting!

HI, My birthday is coming soon, that is tomorrow and I am not sure whether my husband will buy a birthday cake for me or not. From my point of view, a birthday cake is a must for a birthday, Just a small cake will do,it does not mean have to be a big birthday cake. By having a birthday cake, I will make a wish and blow candles..it is very sweet memories for me and not to forget snap a picture for memories. Since your husband does not want to have a cake for his birthday, then both of you can go out for dinner or have simple celebration at home, cook some of his favourite dishes. Mean time, you can also buy present for him...get something that he really need and like. The most important is to spent time together during his birthday.

Having a birthday cake is not a necessary requirement to cwelebrate a birthday. It is a thoughtful gesture. We jsut seem to associate a birthday with a cake. After all, we have to have somewhere to blow out all of those candles!

My families don't live with us, and our friends should work for a whole day, they don't have time to come here to celebrate, only me and my husband to spend the special day. I think one small cake is ok to celebrate.

While a cake is nice and a lot of fun with family and friends, it's not needed to celebrate a birthday. Not everyone is a big cake fun as well. I'm not the biggest cake fan unless of course there is some ice cream involved. There are some cakes that I can eat no problem, but there are some that are just to dry for my liking. The good thing is that are alternates to those options if someone doesn't like cup. For example one could celebrate with cupcakes, ice cream, or pies. Even if you don't have time for a desert, I think a home cooked meal means a lot to somebody, especially if it is their favorite dish.

If you can afford to buy one, why not? I think a birthday with a cake will make a birthday make it feel as it is. We don't buy cake everyday so when occasions like this come to us, and we can afford to buy it, have it...

Thank you for your suggestions. My familers, friends bought a three layers cake for me to celebrate my birthday two months ago, it was festive time, I was very happy to enjoy it. They lighted up the candles, and I vowed in the front of cake,it's so nice. The feeling of mood is very important. Cake seems was important factor.

It's not necessary to buy a cake, thats depend on what are you going to do, if you are going to have from friends invite i think that a cake will be good, but if only are you two, you can buy a couple of cupcake and put a candy on it and if you want make a special dinner. Some mans like to have a simple birthday, the only important thing is that you remember the date.

I completely agree with you. I think my husband is very care if I can remember his birthday, and even he wasn't care what gifts I will buy for him. I will cook for him personally.

I prefer a birthday cake from the store if possible. But you know with life being what it is I'd rather try to make a cake at home and save a few dollars. As my kids are usually only interested in the frosting and I'm not paying $20-30 for them to eat the frosting only anyways. But you don't really need a cake, I think it's more tradition to have a cake on your Birthday to celebrate the day.

I think it's not necessary. But if he doesn't like one, try other "cake" like. Since you really like to buy one for him. Like muffins for the whole family. Just put a candle into one. That will be something new. I always like getting cake on my birthday. I can't ask my parents to buy me one whenever I want one. It is too expensive plus too sweet. My dad has diabetes and I really pity him whenever he sees something sweet in the refrigerator and he can't eat one. So I try to be fair for him. I don't ask for one. But my parents always gets me one and my brother too when it's our birthday. We don't celebrate birthdays. My mom just cook spaghetti. That's all. So they give us a cake, as a birthday gift. Like what I said, we can't have one when we want one.

it's sweet to have a cake for a birthday... like your husband, my father also opts NOT to have cakes during his birthdays... He isn't really a fan of sweet stuffs. so I think that's the reason to it. but when we buy him cakes, he smiles and says thank you but he doesn't blow any candle... haha... that's why i grew up not giving much emphasis to birthday cakes. but i do agree that it would be wonderful to have cakes ^_^

Cake symbolizes an occasion especially birthdays. Your husband probably resist to have a cake for a reason of practicality or believe that cakes are only for children, something like that. But of course as wife, giving him a cake on his birthday is your gesture of thoughtfulness. So, even he resist, if can afford to have a cake, you can do so. Cake epitomizes sweetness, so let him feel your sweetness.

We always buy cake for every birthday celebration of my kids. It has been a part of their yearly celebration to make a wish and blow their candles. The size and flavor of it does not matter as long as they have their cake. But with or without cake the meaning of birthdays will still remain and we have to be thankful for this event when we first occurred and introduced to the world. It should always be, a "happy birthday"!

well ,it depends ,sometimes some people do not like such things as cakes or presents ,only what they want is whom will stay with him/her to pass the birthday time ,sometimes they will make a meal by themselves and watch you to eat them up ,just so simplely will make them very happy ,so my opinion ,sometimes the physical substance is lighter , sometimes only "happy birthday" or "let us make a special meal together" will be better
