What nicknames do you have for your children?

I have two wonderful children and though I swore that my kids wouldn't have shortened versions of their names, it has happened.
My oldest is my daughter Kathryn who will be eight years old in December. We typically call her Kat or Sis. Her brother usually calls her Sissy. I think that these are all appropriate for her because she is an older sister and she is also a person that really likes animals which is why Kat is so fitting for her.
My son is my youngest and his given name is Paul. Some of the nicknames that he has gotten attached to over the four years of his life are Paulkin and Pumpkin. And when he was really small Kathryn used to call him Pauly Wally Doodle all the Day. His uncle likes to call him PT Cruiser because his middle name is Thomas.
What about your children, do you have nicknames for them? How did they get the nicknames that they have?

My son is going to be 30 soon, but we always called him "Apple-cheeks" when he was a child. I have no idea why we called him that, but it stuck for the longest time, LOL

You could probably really embarass him now if you would decide to randomly call him "Apple-cheeks" now.

That would have been hilarious if you would have done that when he brought his friends home on leave.

LOL, that's true! I should have thought of teasingly calling him that when he was in the Marine Corps and used to bring his buddies home during leave time. He has a 3-year old daughter now, so we call her "Devil Baby" whenever she gets rambunctious, and "Grumble-Butt" whenever she's cranky, lol. :-)

Like you I did not want my children to have nicknames but it happened at school. My eldest son(I do not want to call his full name as he has entered politics out here) Jo has ended up being called Billy by his brothers ans others. My second son - Stefan - is called Buf and the third son whose name is Ryan is called John.
I get so mad over this as I call them by their names not a nickname - but it happens with boys. My daughter was called scraggy neck by her brothers for a few years after birth as she was a preemie.
I can see why it has happened but I do not like it. I mean, if I had wanted Ryan to be called John then I would give him the name of John

I can see why you get upset about Ryan being called John. That doesn't really make a lot of sense to me unless at some point he decided that he didn't care for his name and had people start calling him by the other name.

No it wasn't his choice but his full name is Ryan-Sean. Sean is Gaelic for John si I expect at school someone asked him what the Sean part of his name meant - hence they started calling him John

I love the name Sean. If it would have been me in that situation, I think I would have told people that my name was not John, it was Sean.

I love the nickname of Baby. To be completely honest, it reminds me of the movie Dirty Dancing where one of the main characters is called Baby even though she is a teenager.

My son being Hispanic for some odd reason was born with blonde hair and blue eyes, he was the only baby in the nursery who actually slept. So upon leaving the hospitals all the nurses called him Macho, and well there it is Macho he remained.

That is a really cool nickname. It makes it seem like he is a very masculine boy. How old is he now?

I have 3 boys. Mu oldest we call him Cas short for Casey. my middle son we call him Budda but his real name is David. the reason behind the name is becasue when he was a baby I would sit him up and cross his fat legs and have his arms by his side he look just like the Budda dolls. To this day he is still called Budda most of his friends thought Budda was his name for the longest time till they heard me yell David Scott. And asked me who David was lol. And as for my youngest son. We call him little bear. Because when he crawls he swings his head back and forth just like a bear does its really cute and funny.

Intentional or otherwise, I think we all do end up with nicknames, like it or not.
In fact for me it was a challenge to give a name to my son that would not be common at all (yeah, even the nickname!!!)… I ended up calling him Bushka and his actual name is Pushkar… it was a coincidence but the two names sound quite similar and many people think that his nickname is a shortened version of his actual name.

Well, in a lot of situations, nicknames for children are derived in some way from their given name and that is probably the main reason that a lot of people think that his nickname is a shortened version of his given name.

My eldest is Cristina...we call her Cris, then there is Graciela...we call her Grace...then there is Alejandro...we call him Alex...then there is Isabel...we call her Isy...mind you they all have middle names...and by the way my grandson is Darryn Paul...we call him Marty[after Back to the Future] a name he chose to have once he saw the movie...he is going to be 24 next month, and every one knows him as Marty...now my granddaughter is Sophia and we call her Sophy. How about that! maybe we should choose the nick name first... and then the name?....I wander what we come up with?...bit scary!

It would be quite scary to think about the names that we might give to our children if we were to think about their nicknames before we would think about their given names.

Well, thank you for sharing your experience with us here,it is really funny! In my own circumstance,I haven't child with me yet right now.But I can imagine my future to some extent. If the nicknames put on my future children are not something with humiliation,I think that being tolerant perhaps will be a better choice.

I definitely don't want to humiliate my children with the nicknames that I have for them. I do, remember, however when my little brother was younger my mother used to call him Stud Muffin at home and would occasionally embarass him in public by calling him SM.

I don't have children yet but my given name is Ephraim and my nicks are Epme, Eph and Raim. I don't know why I was called Epme but that was my nick when I was small. Maybe they just found it cute to call me Epme. Eph and Raim are just the combined names of Ephraim.
@dorannmwin (36392)

I would imagine that the reason behind the Epme is probably because it was cute to call you that when you were small and then those things that are cute when you are small tend to stick with you throughout your life.

My nickname when I was a kid has something to do with my eyes. In our native tongue, my nickname is having small eyes. I had that nickname until elementary but I had to change it when I was in high school cause I didnt have small eyes at that time anymore. The nickname I am bringing now, is the nickname of my nickname. They are still related but the one I have now it shorter than the original one.

I don't really think that I have a specific nickname anymore. The closest that we will come is that my husband insists on calling me Woman. It doesn't bother me at all, but there are a lot of people that I know who think that he is belittling me.

I have four lovable children, all of them have 2 names derived from the first letters of our names. Their nicknames are their initials except for my youngest. They are Cj, Jc, Aj and Jian. Sometimes it's hard to call them because their nicknames are confusing...^_^ But they have different nicknames in school my eldest is Christine, the 2nd is Claire and the 3rd is Armand. They don't like to be called in their initials when they're in school.

I think that the reason that children tend to have different nicknames at school than they do at home is because of the fact that their nicknames at home are something that the hold very close to themselves.

well my daughters name is samantha.... her nick name is bamma and pebbles only because of her poney tail sticks up all the time and bamma my grandfather gave it to her (bambi) because she was born in hunting season his favorite season.

The bamma is similar to the reason that my son Paul has the nickname of pumpkin. Paul is pumpkin because of the fact that he was born in October.

Dearra has always been Dearra, though her first babysitter did call her Dee Dee. Cary has been called Cary Berry and Harius Carius, but he won't let us use those any more. Naomi got shortened to Nomi, and she still uses it sometimes.

Yeah nicknames, make it shorter and I feel that only us parents and family and close relatives can call them that and it brings more closeness to our siblings. Our first son age 11, is Czandell and we call him "Dadey", then our second son, 6years old is Gimwell and we call him "Mawey and our youngest son, just 1 year ols, is Wyllhelm and we call him "Wyle.

Now that I've been a mother for several years, I do think that the nicknames that we give to our children really are terms of endearment.

I'm really curious, is there a meaning behind the nickname that you've used for your daughter?
