What will be the first thing you will throw out if you want to tidy up your house and make it more beautiful than it is now?
For me, it's probably the tons of plastic bags I stored in my kitchen. Recycling is not such a big scene here and every time I buy something, I was given a bag, so much so that they have accumulated to a great big pile. I think I will keep some for my everyday usage, like a one-month supply and the rest, I will put them in the recycling bin.
What about you? Anything you need to throw out soon?

hi bluemoonpavilion all my stuff is mostly in storage u ntil my son
accumulates enough money to get the two of us into a two bedroom apartment. but my large bureau here is over flowing with tops, old ones
medium old ones, new ones and a lot of ones that just do not quite fit.
I could take my old ones that I just do not wear any longer downstairs and let myfellow residents use them. they are still wearable but just not
what I like to wear, some are too small but none are worn out. I also have some stuff for want of a better word that my son, typical male, thought I might need. I need to sort it out and put what I do not want into a bag and seeif good will or Salvation army would pick it up. I also have a pile of socks that were given to me by a resident who was leaving and they do not fit my large feet but someone here with d ainty feet could sure use them. I need to go throught these drawers and make piles of keep thing, throw away, and give away things. good discussion..

Hi Hatley,
You and your son are sure working hard!
You are such a responsible person too, to give away only things that are in good condition. It's good to check your drawers now and then to take stock and organize your stuff. Thanks for your sharing!

For a few years I have used the same cloth bags over and over again. I love this planet. I want to do my little part. I want to be part of the solution and not part of the problem. I have reduced my possessions to only things I need and use. When anyone wants to give me anything, unless I really need it I refuse. No more clutter for me. I need the space for dancing!

Hi hopeful,
It's always delightful to read your reply.
Each of us has a part to play in protecting this planet and preserving it. I guess more are conscious of it and are proactive like you. Thanks for your sharing.

I think a great start would be removing all the rubbish. Papers, Cans, Plastic anything! Then I guess start by removing all the unimportant things such as unused tins bottles plates etc. Its always good to have less things because it is easier to manage and less of an eyesore unless ofcourse you have a good filing system.
Good luck with your cleaning :)

The first thing i'll throw out would be the unused bags here. They're so big they take up a lot of space on top of the cabinets. They also make that part hard to clean cuz then you'll have to take them down first to clean it.

Probably if we know the proper way of folding them, they can take up much less space. I know a way of folding them into small triangles but it is so tedious to always do that. Now I just quarter them and stick them into a big bag.

Rubbish and unwanted things always accumulate very fast around the house, why is it not applicable to our paper money as well?

I'd probably throw papers. Tons of papers from college. But I usually sell it to recyclers. So no waste. I think it's useless keeping it. I still have my books so I still have something to study with if ever I forgot something.

When we graduated, we have jokingly said that we would burn all our notes.
However to this day I still can't bring myself to throw them away, I kept some of those which I think I can still read, even though I never do.

I absolutely love having a good de-clutter!
When I moved from my house to my new flat, I put everything in three piles. Junk, Things I need, and things I don't need. Everything that came under the things I don't need pile, I sold them. I made a grand total of £2,300 from the things that I didn't need (yes, there were a lot!) I sold a lot of books, DVDs, CDs, 2 TVs, 3 games consoles, and a lot of clothes and general things that just build up over time without you even really thinking about it.

What a good idea to sell off the things you do not need and make a profit from them! That is a good management tactic too!

I hate clutter!
We have a strict recycling program where I live and I am glad. I hate plastic bags!
Our grocery stores are trying to encourage everyone to use the multi-use bags, which is great.
I am constantly trying to get rid of unnecessary junk! It is a constant battle, but I keep trying to win.

Hi suly!
It's great to hear you are doing your part for recycling. It is really an uphill struggle but a worthy one.

I've been planning to sort out the clothes in our closet. We have a lot of clothes we never use anymore. Problem is I never figured out yet to whom I'm going to give it. Majority of the clothes can't be given to charity like my party clothes, corporate/ business attire of my husband and mine, cocktail dress, gowns, etc. I wanted to dispose those clothes to give way to the new one.

Yes, I can see the problem. How about sending them for recycling if you really can't give them away?

I think the first thing that I will throw out of our house will be my mother's things from school. It already consumed half of our storage room and up until now it is still there. Every time my sis and I go home for a vacation, we always complain about those things that for us look like trash of papers that were piled up in a folder. There are also tons of boxes in the house that contain nothing but pieces of unnecessary stuffs from both my parents. I remember clearly that when my mother asked my brother to clean the house, he threw all the stuffs that were piled up on the table in our living room. When my mother got back fro school, she was very angry because her files were out nowhere.

Oh oh, that's sounds so bad...maybe should seek her permission first and also remind her of the extra stuff kept in the storage room. She might have forgotten about them or she may still be needing it. Discuss with your parents on what to throw out, it may be good to get them organized.

For me, they will be my tons of old books. I'm a book lover, My father bought a lot of books for me and I also bought tons of when I was older. Now many of them are not read anymore. They only stay on my bookshelves day after day. I want to sell them to the second-hand book store. But they recycle them only at a price of RMB 1-2 yuan. And if you want to buy them back, the price will become 10+ yuan magically. So, I don't dare to sell them unless I'm sure I will never want to read them again.

Why not sell them on ebay or some online secondhand bookstore? If I know I'm getting such a low price, I will rather donate them or give to a friend who may need them.

hi bmp, I think you are collecting more bags faster than your using them. For myself, besides using the plastic bags for throwing the daily rubbish, some are usually given away together with the newspaper during disposal time. Sometimes if i don't really need a bag, i will not take it from the vendor.

carp, you are right. I only used the plastic bags for lining our rubbish bins, and these don't get filled up so fast.
BlueSparkle, our country have launched several campaigns to raise awareness of recycling, I see it is taking effect, but very slowly.
Your suggestion is good, but then I need to get a bigger memory too, e-space also get used up very fast!

The first thing I would throw out is the old bulky furniture and the matching furnishings with it. I really want to buy modern sleek furniture which would suit so well with my drawing room but finances are a problem and somehow my hubby is a pack-rat who seems to find utility in everything…its so difficult to make him agree to just throw away anything at al!

Furniture is just so expensive and most times they are so durable that you wish them broken fast so you can change a new set. My friend always complained about her wooden sofa set her mum bought, it was so solid but so hard to sit on. It was pretty to look at and not at all comfortable, but they are stuck with it because it is something like an antique which costs a lot.

I actually try to do that on a regular basis, so I don't have too much stuff I don't need around the house. But I always do seem to get way too many old clothes that break and I never fix, but I always keep them, because I tell myself that I will fix them "soon"... I just never get around to it!
