I'm sure it's not a fad that you have to move far away from your home town. But you must think of a solution for your childhood pal. Maybe you can leave him with your family or friends. You can send them some money to help them take care of him. And maybe after a while you will be able to bring him with you.

You can not just leave your dog behind nor is it right for you to give him away either because he's used to you and only you. All of his life he's known only you and your family, no one else. An animal is for LIFE not for when it's convenient for you.
However, can your parents take him? If not then you should take him with you and make sure he's well cared for. DO NOT LEAVE HIM BEHIND! He's YOUR responsibility! I would NEVER EVER give up ANY of my furry friends! NEVER and neither should you!!

I don't know where you live, but I am presuming that you are close to friends if you are moving away from home. If that is so is he not welcome with your parents or friends?
I do know what it is like to part with pets. My father forced me to part with a puppy when my step mother moved in- at the time she was described as a housekeeper. The lying git just wanted to get rid of my dog to move his woman in.
You have a much better scenario that that. In life we sometimes have to move on- if he still has a good home that is a start. Once you have moved you might be able to accommodate him too. My best wishes.
