I just got three of my cats fix, two of which were females and required stitches. They've finally gotten aware of everything and are now trying to clean themselves. Now, how do I stop them from cleaning the stitches or is there no way?

Ok. Thanks. I've also found out that if you put vix (yes, Vix, as in the vapor rub) AROUND the area (not on it) it will stop them from licking it because they can't stand the smell. The stitches on the first two are practically healed now. Thank you for your response.

I really don't think you can and as long as they don't pull out the stitches there shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure you can get them to eat and drink something. My first kitty Ashley hid for a couple of days after her surgery and it was really hard for us to coax her to eat something, but it sounds like your kitties are doing well.

They are doing REALLY well, thanks. I've never fixed a cat before so I'm just worried they're going to pull them out :\.

If you ring the vets they will give you a collar that is a dome collar that will stop them from reaching their stitches, this will also prevent them from getting their mouths aswell as their tongues any where near the place where the stitches are aswell as a large space around their stitches, good luck.

Buy a neck collar either from a vet or possibly from a pet shop. I'm surprised your vet did not advise you to have one, they are not expensive. Cats do not like them but if it is put on the neck fairly tightly they have to put up with the collar being on. Make sure that the cat cannot hurt itself as a cat with a collar on will lose its balance. If it tries to climb onto an object it could cause itself damage if it falls off with the neck collar on.
