After a horrible incident in last Monday's hostage drama, I think it's time for us to smile for what you'll see in the photo below. Ms. Venus Raj's "major major" is now one of the hottest and trending topic on Twitter. Some Filipinos even use these words to crack jokes.
But for me, Ms. Raj's lapse is not something to laugh at (well, aside from what the PNP SWAT made during the hostage). We Filipinos are non-native speakers of English and at least we should be more proud that we are fluent and smart enough to speak and write in English although it isn't our mother tongue. Ms. Mexico even had a translator, but Ms. Philippines? Thanks but no, thanks! We can speak English enough!

People should just give her a break and forget about it already. What matters most is she won the 5th best among like 60 or more candidates. When was the last time a Filipina attained that goal, 10 years ago? That itself is a major feat.
And come to think of it...The question is intrusive and should be deemed inappropriate for the occasion. What is her biggest mistake in life, and she was just 22 years old? And if she did and it's too embarassing or painful, why would the world have to learn a private part of her life? Yeah for sure Mr. Baldwin have tons of mistakes in his life, but Venus Raj was just starting her life for heaven's sake.

My sentiments exactly.. she also seem to have a very positive outlook in life so maybe she deals with problems/mistakes in life very lightly and does not see it as a "major, major" problem. ^_^

i think the biggest mistake that she committed was to pick up the wrong judge who to ask her a wrong question..

It has become a word of the day since Monday, not just on Twitter but almost everywhere. Have you seen how many times that issue i being covered on tv? As if it is really a big deal.
So what if she sounded not so intelligent because of that?I don't think one grammatically wrong sentence delivered must be the basis of one's intellect. There could be a lot of factors why she wasn't able to deliver really well like the pressure of getting the crown since she's almost there, nervousness, the crowd and could have been Baldwin's looks, too.:) Anyways, even English speaking persons have that kind of flaws as well. An author of an english novel confessed that english speaking people really don't give attention to their grammars, except if when you are an author.:)

I agree with you I think we should give her a break. If you watched the CBC news about this issue, even the smartest people including former US president Bush was taken aback when he was asked the same question. She may not have a great command of the English language but at least she was part of the top 5 and that's already an achievement although she could have done better.

Raj was obviously nervous already then. She was out of words maybe due to the pressure of being in the top 5. The fact that she suddenly thanked her family for her being there is a proof that she ran out of words to say and had a mental blackout on how to answer the question properly. I'm proud of her anyways. Congratulations Venus Raj! Your feat left a silver lining after the hostage incident. So proud of you!

I guess she has this habit of saying words twice. I saw her on TV this morning and I can see in her the habit of saying "thank you thank you", and many other things that she is used to. But what I am proud of her is that she never show signs that she gets offended by it and just take it glamorously at all. I think that is one good feature of a Ms. Universe contender. I think just like Miriam Quiambao's famous walk she is more known to be the Ms. "major major" already. Something to remember her by.

A friend of mine said that what she means by "major major" is "bonggang bongga".... Knowing that, I guess she could have thought of a better word. Although she says she is confident, I still believe she could have felt some pressures that is why her answer was not better constructed and it was what first came to her mind that was said. Still I admire her making it to the top 5.

at least Ms. Venus can speak in english. but since this is a serious pageant, there is no doubt that the judge is strict word for word. so, i can say it's an honest mistake. but she made it to fourth round.
