extend their hands in greeting to one another or to seal a business deal, amongst others. It has different meanings around the world and it does convey power, confidence and professionalism. Often times, I have noticed the different types of handshakes when greeting another person and I do not quite understand a limp handshake from another which sort of slips right off your hand after the handshake. It makes me think that the person is kind of slimy. How do you feel about a limp or 'dead fish' handshake? Does it imply distrust or dis-interest or even worse, both! Is there a country in the world in which a limp handshake is very much practised and is the norm. Your thoughts please.

I don't like it when people do that, seems like they are in a hurry, or insincere. However sometimes I think I'm guilty of that when I don't feel like shaking somebody's hand because it's wet or oily or dirty. Then I will make it a quick one, just grab and let go. Other times when I really like to shake hands with somebody, I will make it firm and confident. I think it also shows respect.

hi bmp, i just find it difficult to give someone a limp handshake. It is just either give a good handshake or not. If not, I feel one shouldn't even attempt.

Hiya carpediem, My handshake is very strong and when I like a person even more so. Some of those that give you a cool lukewarm well almost cold handshake without any grip show a lack of interest in anything mostly I would say not just towards you yourself but generally in their dealing with others. That is the way they are so if you encounter a handshake like that it´s almost certain that they are probably not going to do good business with you and the lack of interest will always be there till they change. I have shook more than one hand like that and almost right away a message comes back to me what the Person is about and what they are like. I don´t judge them mind you it´s just what I pick up from them. So far I have not been wrong. Strong handshakes usually denote sincerity and honesty however of course there are the odd one or two of them out there that can be very deceiving can´t they. In Spain you will find most honest People will give you a strong handshake but there you have again the others those are in all Countries (grin).

I didn't so far had encountered a limp handshake. But in my own practice(for I cannot speak for others in my own country), this is automatic in cases where somebody is being introduce to me by my friends and family. This is also common in business dealings and in the world of politics as a sign of power, confidence and professionalism. This is a way of acknowledging someones presence too.For me, a limp handshake does not make a good impression.I perceived limp handshake as a sign of person being disinterested to the other party and lack of social affections(though there can be factors too, like being shy,etc...).I'd rather not initiate or give the person the slighest idea of wanting a handshake if it's going just to be a limp kind of handshake, I might give him/her wrong impressions.
