What in your opinion is the main reason for someone to suffer from depression?

In my opinion depression is predominantly caused by a radical change in one's life which causes the person to feel helpless or sad. Another main factor is loneliness and the need to feel a sense of belonging but failing to do so because you cannot find someone you love or to confide in. Another factor is the character of a person, mainly persons who worry a lot and think too much. What do you think?

I understand depression due to over ambition not being fulfilled ,expectation from some body not being fullfilled ,set a target which u are not capable ,some time failure due to cheating by somebody ,answer lyes that we should depend upon ourselves ,we should not expect any thing from other ,if u get that is well and good ,we should not be sad if u do not get ,we should not fear from failure ,thanks for writing such a subject.

Some people are big headed and I agree with you that if they fail or do not perform as well as they want to they feel depressed. It is one way of getting into a depression and it is a very negative aspect. Ambitions are important but you cannot overdo it.If you do not succeed in one thing you can try out another. Life is full of opportunities.

Based from personal experience, negative thoughts - tons of it. Plus failures, negative things that I reads, job loss - difficulty finding one - discrimination. I also learned, I get depressed for doing nothing, (I'm hyper) so doing nothing is = to boring day. I also get depressed for being alone. Mix them all up, I'd be depressed for months.

Then i believe the best thing you can do is to be in good company, make friends, and if these are not able to be physically with you nowadays there is the benefit of having chatting and sites such as mylot where you can discuss and comment and share thoughts and opinions and feelings interactiely. I agree that failures will put you off and make you feel down but certainly in your life you must have accomplished several good things and made various good deeds. Think about them and you would not feel that depressed.

I think that all the reasons that you gave are the predominant causes of depression. And I think the only that you can do to not suffer from depression is to stay positive always - for sure it is easy to say but hard to do. Staying positive will get a long, and for sure you will benefit terribly if you just try to be positive always. Try to smile and remember that you have enough reasons to be happy and continue life beautifully. Happy MyLotting!

As you rightly said life is full of wonderful things, be it the perfection of nature, the beauty of a flower, the wonder of life... if only we appreciated even small things more profoundly we would be more sensible to cherish life and all its aspects more and consequently negative aspects such as stress, depression and unhappiness would be automatically reduc,ed.

The factors can be varied. They may feel that they have lots of problems but they have no one to share and listen to and of course, it depends on the character of that person, but still we don`t know for sure. Maybe we think she or he is tough, energetic, happy, but we don`t know inside his or her heart. The solution to depression is PRAY and HAVE FRIENDS TO SHARE. Be sure that GOD must have a better plan for your life

I agree with you that in such cases it is important to feel loved. A sense of belonging and love will reduce the probablity of depression. religion is an aspect which not all people value well enough in their lives. If God is seen as our father and creator we would value ourselves more and deal with life more happily as we are creations of God. God created perfection and beautiful creations - we are part of them. So why should we feel depressed? Let us focus on the beauty not on the negativity of life :) there are so many lovely things to think about and to appreciate - family, frriends, nature...

There are number of causes of depression, which include a genetic predisposition to the illness, life changing events or a combination of both. In many cases, depression has been found in more than one generation of a family, which suggests some forms of depression have a genetic aetiology. Studies shows that a child with a depressed mother is at a higher risk of developing depression, however treatment of the mother produces an improvement in the child. People suffering from psychological disorders can also suffer from depression.

This is an intersting aspect. I do hope that a child's character will fight off any genetic inclination or disposition to develpo depression as it is not fair to suffer from it just because the mother for example had a depression, so in such cases i think the mum should be aware of such a fact and make sure to keeep an eye on the child for any possible signs of depression from developing.

I think certain people are predisposed to depression because of their genetic makeup. A good way to determine whether you are or not is to look at your close family members and see if any of those have suffered from depression. There are also other factors, such as your lifestyle. If you are overweight for example, you are more likely to become depressed than you are if you're a healthy weight. This is because junk food causes your mood to rise for a short period of time, but then fall rapidly- and it is low for much longer than it is high for. Of course the main factor is the "thing", whatever that might be, in the person's life that has changed, or maybe that they have always been unhappy with. The main thing to do if you think you suffer from depression is to talk to someone. It might just be a case of feeling down, rather than being clinically depressed, however if talking and time doesn't heal, then you should go to see a doctor, because they might be able to give you some medication which might just be able to help you.

Yes I agree with you that if there are any signs of depression one should nmot keep it all to himself or herself but talk to a relative, or close friend. Sharing how you are feeling is important as you can understand yourself better. Besides you can get another person's in whom you confide opinion. Then, if things seem serious one should not hesistate to ask for professional help before things deteriorate.

When someone is suffering from any kind of depression, they do not feel good about themselves and their life. there are so many issues that can bring about depression. Something good and positive and uplifting must be found to take away the depression.

And I believe that in such a case love and support from close relatives and friends is crucial. When you feel you can share your thoughts rather than suppressing them and coping alone you are taking away at least a small part of the burden. Support is very important in any case and stage of life.

I suffered from major depression early this year because of the loss of my father. For me, the loss of a loved one, especially a family member, causes a person to become severely depressed. It is grief that cannot be healed in a matter of days or months. The loss is irreplaceable. The sudden changes that accompany the loss make the succeeding days miserable. After experiencing this pain, I felt the pain that I've experienced before are minor. Nothing can be more painful than losing someone who has always been there for you.

For me, the main reason for depression is being stressed emotionally and mentally. There are those who are keeping emotions to themselves and they think about a lot of things and are unable to release their stress. Because of this they experience depression.

Your comment was very well put. It is very important to learn how to cope with stress and if possible try to reduce it as much as possible. There are various ways to do so, including massages, walks, quiet moments in the beauty of nature, less tedious work environments and hours... one should try to examine his daily routine and see where stress crops us to try to eliminate it.

Depression is part and parcel of daily living.Everyone can be drawn into depression but the most important part is the ability to bounce back. Resilience is a key factor in not giving in to depression or staying depressed for a long period of time.

Yes I agree with you. A resilient person, with a strong character and a good willpower will be able to feel strong and cope better, thus moving away from a depressed attitude.

I think it all has to do with Society. In nature, I do not believe depression truly exists. I think it is an "industrial disease".

I agree, you made a good point. Depression involves a sense of inferiority or lack of self esteem which derives from comparisons and judgements made by society in general.

Try to remember that each and evry person experiences some sort of failure at some point in their life, be it at school, at an exam result, at a job interview, ... life is full of successes and failures, so surely all of us have done some good successes. try to emphasisze on such successes rather than the negative ones. Each and every person is special in some way or another.

There are a lot of things that causes depression and one of this is losing a love ones or losing something special. When there is what we call LOOSE.. the person undergoes stages of grieving.. DENIAL in which he still denies that a loose happened, it is a coping mechanism of people for any situations that are painful and unanticipated; ANGER in which the person is anger with people who are involved or sometimes it is directed to himself;BARGAINING in which a person are bargaining for things that he had in exchange for the loose; DEPRESSION, it is a stage in which a person feels depressed and has no energy in working, moving etc and later ACCEPTANCE. Sometimes people had difficulty in accepting something.. They have depression for 6 months to 1 year that affects their daily life.. That is Major Depression. One factor that contributes to this is lack of support from Love ones, family, friends and other person that people had difficulty coping, another is that people had really a difficulty in coping with stressful situations and they can't handle things or problems that comes in their way. These people sometimes have low self esteem and they see themselves as not worthwhile persons.

There are dozens of different reasons for depression, and I can speak of own experience. Depression is something that should NEVER be taken lightly. As rational beings what's inside our heads is really important for us to keep going. Unfortunately this world is cruel and unfair, so the number of people with depression will only increase more and more

There are different kinds actually and they are caused by different factors. Like for people with hyperthyroidism, too much thyroid hormones I'm made to believe hinder the body's ability to produce the happy hormone called endorphin. Situations are temporary and depression is really a condition so sadness and loneliness caused by certain situations would be hard to brand instantly as depression.

for me, depression is mainly caused by unresolved problems, issues, or concerns.. depressed people could not sleep, could not make up their minds, and moreover could not calm down thinking and worrying about the unresolved problem.. they get depressed because they are always disturbed..

Depression occurs when one gets disappointed on something that is expected to happen and yet it never did...It's a feeling much deeper than sadness, dominating the whole you...An inexpressible emotion trying to burst out from within but somehow consuming every portion of your humanity. It's a piercing experience, you wouldn't know how or when it would heal...
