"If a tree falls in a forest but there's nobody to hear it, is there a sound?"

Have you ever been asked this question, and really, really thought about it? In my opinion, the definition of a "sound", is that the sound waves reach somebodies ears, so if they never reach any ears, surely that wasn't a sound. I don't know. What do you think about that particular question?

I always thought this was a stupid question. After all think of all the things in the forest to hear that tree Second by falling the tree creates an energy in the form of sound waves whether there is anyone there to hear it or not. Noise is not created by the one that hears but rather by the actions of the one who sends the energy.

According to science, anytime a solid matter forcefully contacts another form of solid matter, there is a sound. So yes, it makes a noise, even if no one is there to hear it. The animals hear it...

Just cause someone isn't there to hear it, doesn't mean it didn't happen. A person hearing is not what caused it, so why should it be what validates it? Just cause you don't hear it, does that mean you don't snore at night? Are you sure? Whatever happens to make the sound..makes it whether it is heard or not. Seems rather simple to me.

I believe that it makes a sound... There are still sound-waves that are being produced, even if they don't enter anybody's ears. It's like if a jet flew over your house, but you had your ears plugged or it was high enough that you couldn't hear it -- the jet engines still definitely made a sound, you just couldn't hear it!

Yes there is a sound. I know cause I had two trees in front of my apartment and when a hurricane came, both of them fell. I remember this really loud snapping noise and then a big boom when it fallen to the ground. So there is sound.

I believe it makes a sound. Another question, If an animal poops in the forest, does it smell? Maybe not, because no one is there to smell it?
