I have never ever been good at maths so I really want my children to get ahead in the subject so I would like to tech them simply and easily how to divide but I don't know how to do it myself.
Could anyone show me and explain simply how I do a dividing sum so I can practise and then teach my kids.
Many thanks for your help.

This is the formula i usually use with my son who also had a problem with dividing. The first thing that i taught him was the anatomay of a division, first we have the dividend that is the number that is being divided, then the divisor, this is the number by which the dividend will be divided, then you have your answer, this is found at the top of the division and next is the remainder if any. Usually i recommend long division for kids because there is less chance of making an error once the steps are followed.
Then we follow these simple steps. step 1. DIVIDE the dividend by the divisor and put the answer at the top. step 2. MULTIPLY the answer by the divisor, step 3 SUBTRACT this answer from the dividend step 4. if there are any remainder the subtraction will reveal it. If there are more numbers making up the dividend BRING DOWN the next digit in the number and start the process over again! That is divide, multiply, subtract and bring down. Lets divide 6|224.
37 STEP 1. Divide 6 (the divisor) in 22 (the dividend)
___ STEP 2. Multiply 6(the divisor) by 3 (the answer) to get 18
6|224 STEP 3. Subtract 18 from the dividend 22 to get 4
-18 STEP 4. Bring down the next digit in the dividend to get 44 then start
-- the process again. Divide, Multiply, Subtract and Bring down.
44
42 Of course make sure that your child really knows their multiplication
-- tables!

Great explanation queery thank you very much. I just feel so useless that I don't know it well enough myself. i will take your explanation and try a few for myself.
Thanks again, you were a great help :)

Yeah, please be a little more elaborate. I still don't understand what exactly you want.

Suppose you have to divide 44 by 7, then write,
7|44|
Here 7 is divisor, 44 is dividend.
how many times 7 is closest but less than 44? 7 x 6 = 42 which is less than 44 and the closest too. So in the next step you write,
7|44|6
..42..
------
Then you divide 42 from 44 to get 2 as remainder, you write,
7|44|6
..42..
------
...2..
So 6 is the quotient and 2 is the remainder.

Do your children know the tables? Or multiplication for that matter? What are their ages and where are they at division? Divisors of single digit or two digits or three digits? You answer this questions I have asked and over a few posts it can be taught.

nine years old and yes they do know there multiplications very well. i need to start with the basics and help my daughter move up to two and three digits as soon as I can.
Thank you :)

I wish I could help but it took me until last year when I was already a teacher that I fully understood how to divide numbers. I didnt practice that much when I was still a student. I think the key to be good at something, is to practice most of the time.

plus 2+2=4
explanation. there are 2 person in a room and 2 more come in the room now they are 4
minus 4-3=1
explanation. there are 4 person in a room 3 are gone now there is 1 person in room
divided 50/5=10
explanation we have 50 balls and 5 children now we giving each children 10 balls the renaming is 0 now each boy have 10 balls and 5 boys we divide 50 balls on 5 children
solution
10
---------
5 [ 50
50
-------
0
example 2 we have 51 balls now we giving each children 10 balls renaming is 1
we have 51 balls now we have equal divide the balls if we give 10 balls each boy it makes 50 balls now 1 is renaming
solution
10
-------
5[ 51
50
------
1
multiply 3x3=9
it means 3 more 3 times 3+3+3=9
no2 9x5=45 it means
9 more 5 time 9+9+9+9+9=45

As a parents its our responsibility to guide our children. In simple math division we have in our bookstore a plush card that will help you to demonstrate simple equation in math also we can used actual materials like a drum stick by presenting example 2 drumstick combined with another two how many it will form?

Division is simply figuring out how many times a number can fit into another. For example 100 divided by 10. You want to see how many times 10 goes into 100. multiply 10 by various numbers until you get as close to a hundred as possible. It happens that 10x10=100. If it didnt go in evenly, you call that a remainder. Good luck. dl

Division is really a more confusing. But if you're expert in multiplication, division will not be hard for your kid.
