There were a lot of buzz recently that Filipino contestants should bring along a Filipino interpreter for the Miss Universe Pageant. What are they implying? That Venus Raj should have gotten an interpreter? I don't think that using an interpreter would have made any difference to her answer of the question.
Do you think she would have won by answering the question in Filipino?

that won't be necessary since Filipino is very much good in english. unless the person never studied english.

I think this is just constructive criticism. Getting an interpreter is not an offense but an advantage. I believe Venus could have expressed herself a little better through her native dialect.

The question sounds simple, but it is actually too intrusive and therefore inappropriate for the occasion.
What if the answer to the question was too embarassing or intimate? "My biggest mistake in life was that I made love to a 50-yr old man blah blah blah...". Or she could just lie about dramatic moments that never happened just to woo the vain judges: "my biggest mistake in life is that I did not pursue to create a nuclear fusion machine that could have solved the worlds' energy problem!".
Let us just be grateful she was included in the Top 5. That itself is a major, major feat.

Why bring a nanny? No need..She did it right, no matter what they say, for us filipinos she's the winner. You might have an answer for that question, or i might have an answer to that question. Or everyone might have an answer to that question, so what, that's your answer, this is my answer and that's how she answered it. We have a different answer, because we also live in differently situation. Would you say YES even if you don't have one? would you say NO even if you did? And even if you do have or you haven't, the answer lies in you, because you're the one knows what to say and not to say.
An interpreter? THE QUESTION IS..would the interpreter interpret it the way Ms. VENUS RAJ want to interpret?

Even if the question would be translated in the Filipino but the question is still personal then I think that could be the same result. Even George can't even answer the question of Mr. Baldwin. Her grammar is not horrible and yet she is far better than Janina San Miguel. Because she was able to reach the top 5 that is already hard to achieved. As what Gloria Diaz said the question was too personal that it could take too much time for you to analyze it.

My dear mlhervas, even if she have answered the question in filipino, still her answer to that question would be the same which was just translated to English language. Every contestant were strictly screened so I think Ms Venus has put her best effort to win the 4th place only. Ms Venus was not trained well to answer questions in the final round.

I'm in favor of having filipino interpreter for the Ms. Universe because our candidates can express themselves more if they are using our own language. Just like those countries who have interpreters, do you think they can still answer the questions properly if they don't have it? well, I don't think so. It's an advantage to have interpreters. I'm not saying that we are not fluent in english but still some of us have difficulty speaking in english, we should admit that because it's not our basic language and we are not born to it. Maybe if venus is using her own language she could have been express her answer more accurately, eventhough she did'nt won the crown im still proud of her for making it to the top 5.

i think we really should. but i don't think though it will really help. i think even if she had an interpreter should would have answered the same in tagalog. it is not really problem of speaking in english . she just don't know how to answer the question as it was more like a difficult question for her.

I don't think there's a need for Philippine bets to bring an interpreter, we will become a laughing stock even more since we trumpeted to the vast universe that our second "official" language is ENGLISH, bringing an interpreter would be very funny and we would become a butt of joke in the international scene.
I don't think the answer of Venus should be given so much hoopla, it was just a minor concern since she still a winner and we should be very proud of her because somebody managed it to the top after several years of no one making it to the semifinals.

I think yes. because in my own opinion Venus Raj is not answering the question very well. If she understood the question very well I think she won the Miss Universe 2010. but lets accept it and congratulate Venus Raj because of all country in the world who participate the miss universe the Philippines is top 5 and venus Raj got the fourth runner up title.

Maybe it would be right to have an interpreter so that they can fully express their answer. I must admit not all Filipinos are good English, they can be really smart but are not fluent in English. People need to be fluent in English in a Miss Universe beauty pageant if they dont want to have an interpreter because it would really make a difference in answering.

Filipinos considered English as a second language. Venus Raj, did well in the pageant. She was able to express herself and answer the question with confidence. Though her grammar may be wrong , at least it was understandable. Even English speaking people can commit error on grammar. Let's give Venus Raj a credit for representing the Philippines.

Given a chance to join the Ms. Universe beauty pageant, I will ask for an interpreter to show my nationalism but I will explain my reason first why I prefer to have one. I believe it is more impressive for someone to speak in their own native language to show patriotism rather than speaking in foreign language just to impress others.

I don't agree with the idea of having Filipino interpreters for the Miss Universe pageant, simply because we are an English speaking country and English is our medium of instruction. In my opinion, beauty queens should undergo a lot of training for personality development, speech and public speaking, and English proficiency before they compete internationally. In the case of Ms. Venus Raj, I think her answer was quite good, what was wrong was the way she said it and the words that she used. The question sounded very simple but actually it was quite difficult...who would want to divulge her biggest mistake to the whole world??? Anyway, I think people should just stop criticizing her and making fun of her answer. We should all be very proud of her because reaching the Top 5 is already a very big achievement. :)

...i've heard about this buzz, but you are right, what's the point? i don't think it will change the fact that she was not able to won the title..even manny pacquiao don't need an interpreter and answered the english question from a foreigner using "carabao" english but still was able to deliver his point...i'm not degrading manny pacquiao here...im just stressing out that filipino's are intelligent enough to understand English language..you could say that 3/4 or more of filipino population can comprehend english...with regards to the miss universe pageant it would be best that we recognize our representative and be proud of her since this is the first time for so many years that Philippines got an award from this prestigious pageant...

Well, if other contestants can bring in their own interpreters, why can't it be an option for Philippine representatives. Although Filipinos can speak and understand English, we should accept the fact that we are not native English speakers (with the exception of course of those who grew up speaking the language) wherein words will just come out naturally the way we'd like to say and what we really mean to say.

Nope. What's done is done, Venus may not have gotten the crown but she already accomplished more than any other candidates in the last 10 years. Besides the Q&A portion is just part of the whole pageant and it's not the sole basis why someone get's crowned. ON the other hand, the Philippines has been answering questions in English in every international competition ever since, getting an interpreter just because we landed 5th is too shallow. Not only that, it's just showing that we are moving backwards. So let's just move forward and hope that the next contestant will make it more closer to the crown.
